He did go 6-0 to start his head coaching career with Kyle Orton as his QB... so there is that...

McCarthy could run the Giants before McDaniels interviews. Not sure if he's interviewing with the Panthers.
It might hurt teams but the league should have an actual date, post Superbowl, to start interviews. Might be a more level playing field for teams AND candidates who may better be able to prepare themselves while not hurting their teams.

We also have a pretty talented roster, solid DL, tandem of CB, multiple legitimate weapons on offense, and a QB who has talent but needs direction. That will attract good candidates.

I don't want anything to do with McDaniels. Far too much ego for my tastes. Ego isn't necessarily a bad thing. Heck, Belichick has a big ego. But Belichick has a past that backs him up. I don't think McDaniels can bring the "street cred" to back up his ego. Even if he is the "genius" behind the Patriots Offense (which he isn't) I don't think his hard headed approach will resonate here (Or in most places)
I am still leaning towards Roman and Stefanski...Roman has built several offenses with and without star QB's. He turned Kaepernick into a Star. He is doing the same with Jackson. And when he was with Buffalo, he turned them from one of the worst rushing teams to one of the best. With Chubb and Hunt...A run specialist is not a bad idea...lol.
Stefanski's approach, from the things I have read, emulates the kind of coaching that I want and like. Both of them place their players into situations where they can succeed. They adapt to their surroundings. They are not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole until such they can find the round peg. They are not trying to fit the players to their scheme. They are fitting their scheme to the players.
Mike McCarthy doesn't impress me much...But I would not be up in arms to grab him. It will likely mean we will lose Randall. If I remember correctly, he was not fond of McCarthy and how he was used in Green Bay.
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

Man, last year really proves why you never want to fire a coach midseason. You always get an interim, or at least internal candidate who emerges and then it makes it messy to conduct a real search. This time, we really do have a lot of good options. I could see several of these guys working out nicely.

Most had their careers destroyed in Cleveland by an owner who changes direction at every whim. Or maybe they just were not that good to begin with and that's why they haven't been successful elsewhere. Other than Shanny, name one HC we fired that was successful as a HC elsewhere? And Shanny wasn't even a HC here.

And when he was with Buffalo, he turned them from one of the worst rushing teams to one of the best. With Chubb and Hunt...A run specialist is not a bad idea...lol. Unfortunately, I don't think it really works like that. Roman has done tremendous work, and some point, a team is going to be happy they gave him a head coaching job. That said, it shouldn't be us. Keep in mind he built several offenses around mobile QBs that were also featured as runners. This is important. If you don't have those components, you can't run Roman's running scheme (I'm sure he could modify it some but then its effectiveness would go down significantly.) Zone read runs are simply more efficient than regular running plays. On the zone read, one defender has to account for the QB. The offensive line sometimes gets better angles on defenders. Linebackers have to pause and react instead of attacking the ball, because the QB can always keep it himself and bounce it outside. Running backs have it much easier in this environment and then the QB also gets some himself. You can't do that with Baker. He doesn't have the wheels, and doesn't look to really have the durability either. I don't care how good Chubb and Hunt are, the Browns will never have as good of a running game as the Ravens as long as we have an immobile QB and they have a highly mobile/dangerous one and they're willing to use him in the run game. We just have to accept that. We can still have a good run game and a dangerous downfield passing attack (this was the whole idea of getting Baker, Landry, OBJ and others) but it won't be a dominant running game like they have. Different talent leads to different philosophies. Roman would fit in somewhere where there is a much bigger question at QB (yeah I know Baker has a lot to prove still, but we're not moving on from him now nor should we), where they can afford to go all-in like the Ravens have. Dual-threat QBs are common at the college level. Look at the Ravens-- got Jackson at the end of the first round, then filled out the QB room with RG3 (free agent) and McSorley (6th round pick). That is not that much investment in the QB room in terms of picks but a team has to go for it all. That'll be a much easier sell after he can show what the Ravens have done. Maybe that's in the Browns future too, you never know, but not this offseason.

McCarthy could run the Giants before McDaniels interviews. Unless we really impressed him, he probably will sign with another club. Other teams will be hiring their coaches and he may not want to let opportunities slip away, as there's no guarantee we'll hire him if he waits for us to complete our process.

Wonder how the interviews went? I was expecting to have a full breakdown of McCarthy's gait/stride as he left the building, and what that means for his chances. At the very least, a Tweet saying McCarthy left the building. I didn't see anything. Apparently even the media is tiring of Browns countless coaching hires.

looks like the Giants did interview Kris Richard The New York Giants interviewed Dallas Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator Kris Richard, the team announced Thursday.
It was reported on Monday that Richard would be interviewing for the vacant head coaching role at some point, and the team confirmed it. Richard is among the several candidates being interviewed for the head coaching role. link

Honestly - if McCarthy is 85% of the coach they want, they'd be smart to sign him and "take him off the street" ASAP. Waiting till Jan 10 to interview McDaniels in the hope he [1] is closer to 100% of the coach you want and [2] will accept an equal power share with a GM and with Depo in the mix .... would be fool hardy.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Since the HC hire will be first.
And the head coach will have significant input on the GM hire.
And both will report to Haslam on equal footing.
The GM/HC pairing is critical both in the hiring process as well as the overall prospects for success.
Eliot Wolf remains as a GM assistant.
There has been a lot published about Haslam's relationship and feelings about Andrew Berry. Any HC candidate that would want to work with Berry may well have a inside track.
Stefanski comes to mind.
McCarthy most likely would go with someone out of the Green Bay Player Personnel Group.
McDaniels obviously someone from the Pats.
During the head coach interview process no doubt the topic of GM will be part of the interview.
Haslam made clear that he will make the final decision. But he placed high importance on the HC/GM relationship.
So the pairing is as important as the single hire.
In that light IMO we need to look in that direction.

I totally agree. McCarthy is at best the only proven HC in this search. Waiting on McDaniels is a risk.

I think that Bieniemy is one heck of a coach. I don't know if he is ready to be a head coach, but he is well respected.

Browns interviewing Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy today as possible replacement for Freddie Kitchens By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns are interviewing Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy Friday in Kansas City for their head coaching vacancy, the club announced. Bieniemy, 50, wasn’t a candidate for the Browns last season despite the fact he worked with Browns GM John Dorsey in Kansas City. In addition to the Browns really liking Bieniemy, he satisfies the Rooney Rule, which stipulates teams must interview at least one minority candidate for their vacancies. He’s also a candidate for the Panthers and Chiefs openings. He’s the third candidate interviewed by the Browns after former Packers coach Mike McCarthy visited team headquarters on Thursday, and the Browns traveled to Baltimore on Thursday to speak with Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman. They’re heading out West to interview 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh this weekend, and will talk to Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll Sunday in Buffalo. They’ll also interview Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who’s meeting is set for Jan. 10. Bieniemy spent nine season playing running back in the NFL before joining the coaching ranks, so he’d have some unique plans for Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, whom he coached in Kansas City. He’s been with the Chiefs since 2013, but has served as offensive coordinator since last season. In Bieniemy’s first season as Chiefs’ coordinator last year, Kansas City was first in yards and points per game and scored the most points in a season in NFL history with 565. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes became the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 TDs in a season, joining Peyton Manning. This season, the Chiefs went 12-4 again and won the AFC West, clinching the team’s fifth straight playoff appearance. The Chiefs were No. 6 in offense this year in and No. 5 in points scored. Mahomes was seventh in the NFL with a 105.rating, throwing 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. “You guys know how I feel about Eric,” Chiefs Andy Reid told reporters on Monday. “I think he would be tremendous. I don’t know the team, but there is a team out there that could really use him. Being the leader of men that he is, you’re not going to find people better than that in that category. He’s a sharp offensive mind on top of that.” https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2020/01...e-kitchens.html

J/C... Found this..Just trying to find out more. Many Green Bay Packers Hope Mike McCarthy Lands Another Head Coaching Job... Several current Packers who played under McCarthy told Conley Media they’d love to see their former coach get another shot. “I think he would do great,” Packers nose tackle Kenny Clark said. “Coach Mike is a great coach. I mean, he’s creative, he leads guys. I think he has the ears of the locker room when he speaks. People respect him. I think he’d do great. I loved coach Mike.” Veteran cornerback Tramon Williams agreed. “Mike would do great,” Williams said. “Mike was a great coach for Green Bay for a long time. I enjoyed Mike. He was a player’s coach. He’s a family man. Everything that I look for as a player for (a coach) to stand for, Mike was that. I enjoyed Mike as my coach and I wish him the best for sure.” link

After watching the McCarthy Project video it put my mind at rest regarding MM.
The guy is addicted to football. Obviously prepared. Has credibility. Has the resume. He has done everything in football that one could ask for the HC position.
The only way he should get away is for him to decide against the Browns and take another job.
And that may be a real problem. I believe he will have his choice of jobs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bieniemy seemed to be in the Browns "Round 2" round interviews. By that, I mean they seemed interested, but not so much to get an interview on the calendar right away (McCarthy, Roman, McDaniels).
If I had to guess (and that's all we can do, there is shockingly few tidbits of info coming out) I think they're tying to satisfy the Rooney Rule in a hurry. That points to either McCarthy or Roman (both interviewed yesterday). That also points the Rooney Rule needing to be tweaked to be more effective (but I don't want to hijack another thread).
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
