The good news coming out of the Patriots loss, now the Browns have their opportunity to get Josh McDaniels hired as their next HC, AND THEY DON'T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE PATS WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL.
I've read that McDaniels IS A FAVORITE of the Haslams and Josh is a local Cleveland product and would be returning home to coach the Browns.
McDaniels is the highest qualified prospect the Browns will see this year with numerous Super Bowl appearances as the Patriots offensive coordinator.
Finally, the Browns have a bit of luck on their side.

And he is NOT The highest qualified candidate - that would be McCarthy, hands down.

I worry about McDaniels for the same reason so many others do.
He has never had to be "the voice in the room". He has never had to be the guy who disciplines the team, or even his offensive side of the ball. That discipline is all created and enforced by Belichick. I think that's why so many of his coordinators have failed as head coaches.
We'll see what happens. I hope for the best, but am prepared for the worst ..... no matter who we hire. The bum at the top is unchanged, and I think that he is the biggest problem this team has.

I would not care if the Browns hired McCarthy either but he would be #2 on my list and like I said, the Haslam's favor McDaniels.

The luck the Browns have on their side is they can get the McDaniels' interview out of the way and get McCarthy hired before someone else snatches him up

Exactly.... It's about risk aversion. What we have seen of McDaniels as a HC was BAD. . . . *Maybe* he will be the next great HC - but there is nothing to indicate that. He may just as likely be the next great promising coordinator bust. McCarthy did it as "The Man" ... Believe he is hungry and motivated.

I don't believe that to be true. Freddie had 1/2 of one season with someone else's playbook calling plays. Never before was he in any sort of coordinator role. Stefanski has had 2 seasons worth of OC one as interim. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Stefanski

I dont care he's our guy or not.
Belichick's road to NE was basically the same road as McDaniels is on. I bet NE fans were not so excited when Bill jilted the Jets and went there. I also bet they wouldn't trade those 6 Superbowls for anything.

II have reservations about him. Look at the way he stiffed the Colts.. I'd question if he'd do that to us.
Then look at his record in Denver. Not Stellar at all
Is he a good coach or is he a good follower of Belichick?
We've already had two of those..

McCarthy made the Super Bowl as a head coach, McDaniels as someone else's lackey. This is the key. How responsible for NE's success are the assistant coaches? We simply do not know. It's not like that team's operations is an open book. Does McDaniels do more than get coffee and flip pages? Who knows? If we are OK with a coach who happened to be at a bunch of super bowls, even if he was just along for the ride, then NE's staff has a bunch of them.

you have to wonder if Dorsey would be willing to go down that road with McDaniels. I don't think there is any chance on that.. Anyone want to make a wager on that ?

If the Haslams do not hire who Deposesta recommends the chances of that hire lasting for very long is not good, unless the Haslams move on from Depodesta. This will be the 3rd coaching search since Depo joined the Browns and they have yet to go with his choice. If they do the same thing this time then they need to fire Depodesta because he is not worth whatever they are paying him. My 1st choice would be McCarthy but I also liked the Hue Jackson hire at 1st but I soon changed my mind. I also wanted Gregg Williams to get the job instead of Kitchens. Whoever they hire must bring discipline to the team, be able to improve Baker, be a strong leader and buy into analytics or they won't last. Either let Depodesta make this coaching hire or send Depo packing. Nothing else will work.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Two out of three choices that went against his suggestions were quite bad. Why would anyone assume DePodesta is always in the wrong? Not you, per se, just a lot of posters seem to dislike the guy without knowing exactly what he offers and, of that, what is ignored.

Just heard on 92.3 the fan that McDaniels interview has been moved up until sometime tomorrow. This is the news I was expecting to hear from Berea.
In the past the Browns have targeted HCing candidates who were involved with teams that went deep into the playoffs, meaning the Browns had to wait to hire a HC and then that HC had to try to put together a coaching staff WITH THE LEFTOVERS of position coaches.
The Browns now have a major advantage to get a guy ownership likes...go get him.

But what does Depodestas info say about him? Either its positive or negative. I don't think it's at all his choice but either they're going to use his analytics or they won't.

If the Browns lose out on McCarthy or McDaniel, Depodesta and how he insists on running franchise will be part of the reaason why.

Depodesta has 4 yrs experience at the NFL level and the Browns record speaks for his ability, especially his first two seasons.
Dee Haslam probably knows more about hiring a HC than anyone else named on the search committee.

Hot...this thread is about the Browns getting lucky for a change because one of HCing prospects high on ownerships list is going to be available much sooner than anyone thought he would be available.
Teams that get the guys they target have a much better chance of succeeding than those forced to continue coaching searches for extended periods of time, weeks beyond the end of the season.

thought this was an interesting take:
Contract for Browns’ chief strategist Paul DePodesta, who is spearheading the team’s HC search process, expires this week, per sources. DePodesta still is wanted in Cleveland, very much. A HC/GM, and DePodesta, all signing contracts at same time could create more alignment.

Any coach the Browns hire must be all in with analytics as long as Depo is employed by the Browns or they better win and win big because the friction between the analytics staff will have Depo in Haslams ear. I cannot understand why the Haslams, who value Depodesta so much, have gone away from the coach he wants both times. It is going to come down to who Haslam wants vs Depo's choice, unless they both want the same guy. Who do you trust? I do not trust the Haslams.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

I do not see him as the most qualified.
And it sounds great that he is from the area but really that should carry no weight.
Honestly there have been many Pats OC's and they won with all of them.
He may have a good offensive mind. Maybe a good play caller. Might be able to create a good game plan.
But the Pats record starts with Belichick and Brady.
I have serious questions about him as a leader and head coach. His time in Denver did not go well. He may not have been ready at such a young age.
And he may never be ready. He has yet to prove he is head coach material.

If we hire McDaniels as HC we might as well and just fire him the next day and save us the trouble of doing it in a year or two. I want no part of the guy.

Nothing good about this is my opinion. I could be wrong but at this point I am hoping for McCarthy. The negatives to that is he will probably want a "yes man" GM. Also, if I remember correctly he likes to run a 3-4 defense which we are not built for right now. I could be wrong but I believe most of his defenses were middle of the pack at best. Still, he is a superbowl head coach with plenty of playoff experience.
