My bank sold to Huntington and the process is now complete. It's a huge PITA for me to change all my account info with credit cards and online accounts. I liked my old bank....even if it was free checking.

I'm looking specifically at Ohio Healthcare FCU if anyone knows much about them.

My Credit Union has changed 4 or 5 times while my bank has changed once I believe.

---

My Credit Union seems to have a little better rates, but takes awhile to catch up to the banks in technology (ie online banking). It also has less ATM's where I dont' have to pay the $2.50 ransom on both ends for some $$. I pretty much just use it for the investment side (savings and CDs) while I use a well known bank for the every day cash flow. Online Bill Pay is such a great tool. I could never go back to scratching a check.

Your CU doesn't participate in shared branching?

To be honest, I haven't really checked in awhile. At one time they did, then they didn't. They may have some new partner now but I got accustomed to using them on the investment side only. They just got "free" online banking within the last year. I had already been doing that through a bank for a long time. Maybe the Credit Union I have just stinks?

Service... I call my credit union, talk to the same very nice lady every time, she gives me my loan balances in a minute, without pressing #1 for English...

I needed a car loan a couple years ago, called her and in 5 minutes I knew how much I could borrow to keep a certain level of payment depending on if I wanted 3 years or 4 years or whatever and I knew I was already approved...

I can't guarantee you that every credit union is like that... but I love mine.... and it's 2 states away.

Not knocking credit unions here at all: I get that service with my local bank (100 year anniversary this summer). I know, ,personally, many of the people that work there. I've done work for the bank, I've done work for many of the employees. I love the small town life. (this bank does have 11 or so branches in communities around here, and they just bought a bank in indiana, so it's not like I'm talking about a bank with 10 employees).

The more I read about how some people have it, living in a city - not knowing or trusting people or companies, the more I love where I live. And I'm not just talking about banking.......buying t.v.'s, going to a dentist, or a doctor, the lumber yard - where ever. (I'm making a cornhole game - go to the local place to get the plywood instead of driving 15 miles to Lowes, where the wood was cheaper - at the local place, after I told them what I was doing, they cut the plywood for me - perfect dimension. What was the price for them cutting the plywood? Nothing.) My wife is a Michigan fan, and she wanted the boards to be "michigan". I went to a local place, took in a michigan magnet that my wife wanted on the boards - they re sized it, made it, made us pin stripes in the exact same color, and offered to put them on for us!!!!!

I love small town living. Know why? If you screw someone over, everyone knows about it. It affects you personally. Our town is about 4,000 people, but the towns around here are pretty much the same way - the small towns anyway.

But, as for the initial question - I personally feel the bigger the business, the less they do for customers on a personal level. I'm biased, I know. If I were in your spot Michelle, I'd go with the smaller place - probably the credit union. (if your bank just got bought by Huntington, there's another bank here in town that used to be one name, then got bought by another one, then it became First National, then MidAm, then something else, and now it's Huntington). I hate that.

Sky Bank, eh?

I'm strongly considering moving to Chase, because they'll give me all kinds of freebies since my mortgage is through them. They'll also give me money for setting up payroll direct deposit. Gotta love that.

I just got an offer from them in the mail. Money for setting up direct deposit. Of course, my employer doesn't offer it.

12 years ago I got a good home mortgage loan from a bank and so I switched my banking to them. After a couple of buy-outs I am now done with banks and I'm a happy member of Desert Schools Federal Credit Union.

My father swore by the his credit union,, Dad worked for GM as a Tow Motor operator for 20+ years.. so it was either the GM CU or the UAW CU, I don't remember which to be honest.

But each week, he would put money in to an account directly from his paycheck,,,, when Dad died in 1983 he had something like 250K in there.. and NONE of us knew it, not even my mom.... Talk about a surprise...

I was in the Euclid Municipal CU and it was pretty cool. They deff gave you personal service, had good rates for stuff.

I also used Charter One forever and they have never done me wrong. I get rewards just for using my MC Debit Card and they have pretty good rates if I need anything. My savings is thru ING which gives you great rates b/c there online. A portion of my check each week goes in there.

Yeah, it is ugly. I liked my old one much better. I do like Huntington's online banking better than Sky's. I have to go into the bank today, so we'll see what I think afterward. I hate going IN banks. I do most of my banking at the ATM.

Had to re-read that, I thought you said...

Which I'm sure they would appreciate.

There are three big selling points for Credit Unions.

CREDIT UNIONS ARE NON-PROFIT. They exist solely to serve their members. Profits are returned to the members in the form of dividends.

CREDIT UNIONS ARE MEMBER-OWNED. Business decisions are made on the basis of what is best for the members, not the stockholders.

CREDIT UNIONS ARE DEMOCRATICALLY CONTROLLED. Members are entitled to vote for the Board of Directors, the leadership body of the Credit Union.

So, if thats what you are looking for go for it. I'm a member of a Credit Union, but its become so large itsreally only a credit union by name. Its more like a bank.

Just remember that Huntington charges for debit purchases.

I have to figure out how to get everywhere I shop to run that damn green card as credit and not debit.

I was spoiled. I was with 2nd National Bank of Warren for over a decade. Great bank. Wonderful service. Never charged for anything.

Then they sold out to Sky. Sky sucked. I was going to move my checking account, but then found out that Huntington bought them.

Depending on what Huntington wants to give me to stay, like free checks, and other goodies that I can get elsewhere, I might give them a chance. However, considering the utter debacle the transition was, and with the extrordinarily high frustration level from doing something as simple as setting up my new online banking account, to getting a recording on their recorded number saying that they were too busy to answer calls at this time, please call back later ...... let's just say that they didn't win me over right off the bat.

I haven't used my card as a debit card in years...they usually ask if it's credit or debit. And, if it's one of those swipe machines that you run it through yourself, just hit cancel when the PIN number entry screen comes up and hit credit.

I had trouble getting mine set up, too. Finally got it working late Tuesday.

I'm with Huntington, and so far it's been a good experience. Free checking, online banking, and I also do most of my banking at an ATM.

The nice thing about my old credit union was the share drafts, or checking with interest, no matter what your balance is. I never managed to keep enough money in the checking account to get much interest income though. Always seemed to have the habit of spending the money if it wasn't kept separate from my checking account... too damn convenient...LOL.

Hunington is he one with the Ohio State Debit card right? I see that commercial all the time. "OH! IO my friend"

I'm loyal and Charter One has a lot of good things. My online bill pay and banking always works good. Each time I use my debit card I get that dollar amount into a rewards account to get gift cards and things. It works out good b/c we both use the debit card for almost everything. I never carry cash anymore.
