What exactly is a Buckeye?? I recently heard this question posed to former Basketball player Jim Jackson, and wondered how I'd answer it. (I have several answers)
Happen to be watching Candies (Buckeyes) being made on "modern marvels"
How do you answer it?

A buckeye is what we used to pack inside our snowballs when we were kids.

Our Lab-Shepherd mix, Boo, got very sick after eating a few real buckeyes. Labs will eat anything. Malleys' candy Buckeyes are tasty, though.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Tree with poisonous nut that people somehow thought look like a deer's eyeball at some point.
Also a candy made to look like said nut. Made by dipping a highly sweetened peanut butter ball dipped in melted chocolate.
There is NO buckeye candy made that can top a homemade one. FACT.

My school wasn't the subject of discussion and I was just poking fun but the mascot of my school is a Terrapin.. that's a small turtle found primarily in the marsh lands of the eastern US. Maryland has won 10 national championships since 2010 in 5 different sports... 22 national championships in 7 sports if you go back 20 years... our football team sucks... why did you think I was talking about football?

It's a nut that resembles the eye of a deer.
...more below.BUCKEYES A small, shiny, dark brown nut with a light tan patch that comes from the official state tree of Ohio, the buckeye tree. According to folklore, the Buckeye resembles the eye of a deer and carrying one brings good luck. “Buckeyes” has been the official Ohio State nickname since 1950, but it had been in common use for many years before. The first recorded use of the term Buckeye to refer to a resident of the area was in 1788, some 15 years before Ohio became a state. Col. Ebenezer Sproat, a 6’4″ man of large girth and swashbuckling mannerisms, led the legal delegation at the first court session of the Northwest Territory in Marietta. The Indians in attendance greeted him with shouts of “Hetuck, Hetuck” (the Indian word for buckeye), it is said because they were impressed by his stature and manner. He proudly carried the Buckeye nickname for the rest of his life and it gradually spread to his companions and to other local settlers. By the 1830s, writers were commonly referring to locals as “Buckeyes.” https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/what-is-a-buckeye/

I always thought it was an American word for a chestnut.
They definitely don't use the word "buckeye" in England. At least I never heard it in the many years I lived there and I just asked my wife and she said she has "never heard that word before".

There were about 10 buckeye trees planted in my grade school yard. They are a pretty tree but a bit messy I remember cracking a few open the outer skin was a bit thorny.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!…. That did not age well.

Geesh, guys! guys! c'mon guys! (ha!) that's an Ohio, State term right there, the phrase, "guys" to mean a group of either male or female or combined gender.
A Buckeye is first the Mascot of a University, a very large one in enrollment, maybe the largest enrollment, with something like a million, or a half a million, living alumi around the world;
2nd A buckeye is a term for residents and long time residents and people born in and who'd say they come from the State of Ohio, as a home or residence
3rd, a Buckeye is a Nut, from a tree, with a deep burgundy colored outside and a light brown inside, circle off of an uneven oval shape, about the size of (3x times the size of a Hershey's kiss)
That Nut, was held to resemble, by some Native Americans, (presumably from in or around Ohio, or other Northwest territories, of the 1700's---ish, held to resemble the Stare, of a Buck Deer, The Eye of a Buck Deer, as it Stares out through forested undergrowth.
And so the Nut, was given the name, (maybe a nickname) by those Native Americans,
4th, a Buckeye is any one of a number of candies, which use Chocolate and peanut butter to resemble the nut, or just be made in a bar shape, (A bar of Chocolate over peanut butter)
5th, a Buckeye is a state of mind, and a state of being, that comes from the act of Residing in this State, which pretty much sits "Right in the Center of the Heart of all these other regions around it" Which has been given the phrase "The heart of it all"
But pretty much it is what it is, you all know what that is, .. and what it means.

"wrong a awful lot for being a teacher " I love ya but, since "awful" starts with a vowel and not a consonant, I believe it's wrong to use "a" and "an" should be used, so " wrong an awful lot " would be the correct usage Doh, since you paired it with "your" maybe it was intentional, oops, my bad.

What exactly is a Buckeye?
If you have to ask you aren't one.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

That's pretty cool. Which sports? Mens and womens soccer, mens and womens lacrosse, field hockey, and if you go back to the early 2000s, mens and womens basketball. Funny thing is I get on OSU fans.. but I would absolutely trade 21 of those national championships (all but mens basketball) for one football national championship... I assume that's a given. But it ain't going to happen any time soon so you brag about what you can.
