While it's hard to say this looks anything but bad, this guy has turned down basically everyone that has offered him a job (or just straight up declined to be interviewed).

If Andrew Berry turns us down. . .

Hunt gets in trouble and then Paton subsequently takes his name out of the running.

Coincidence? I think not!

We promote Eliot Wolf or grab that guy in NE? Quickly, the Berry camp might be in for a ton of leverage.

I bet GM's phone just went off .... and it's the Browns wanting to interview him!

My guess is that it was Berry all along. It's still not a good look for Paton to pull out after two interviews.

Sashi Brown was in town last night for the Cavs - Raptors game.. Maybe he took a quick meeting?

Paton, a top choice of new coach Kevin Stefanski, opted to remain with the Vikings because he had a number of issues he had to work through, and wasn’t entirely comfortable with how it would all play out. He left here on Thursday with some questions about the power structure and the division of labor.

He also would’ve been the sixth GM of the Browns since 2012, and continuity was a big concern. In addition, as many as half a dozen GM jobs could open up next year, and he’s expected to have multiple opportunities.

Expected.

Sour smell. Clearly not comfortable with Haslam and or Podesta.

Unfortunate. When the owner is untrustworthy this what happens.

Why take a chance of having your career destroyed?

Honestly Berry may well pull out as well knowing he was second. He is a young guy with a good position. He has time to wait and find what suits him best.

Not optimistic about him coming to Cleveland.

They may well have to begin a new search to find someone willing to risk their career.

Where was it said that Berry was second? Isn't it more likely that Paton pulled out because he thought he was second?

Nobody said Paton was second. BUT they sure acted like it. You should be use to folks acting like they know it all when in fact they know nothing.

Agreed with both GM and cfrs.

I think most people assumed he was the first choice because he had two publicly known interviews. But that shouldn't really equate to being the #1 guy.

Spin time.

When they do finally hire someone or are forced to hand the job to Wolf.

The Haslam presser will act like this is the guy we wanted all along. He will not answer any ranking questions.

Act like it was a collaborative decision and in the end it was unanimous.

All BS of course.

The guys family might not want to uproot.
Maybe they didn't like the city. His history pretty much tells me he is picky about his next gig and he knows he'll get more than this opportunity. He might have disliked the structure but I'd think he would have realized that after round 1.

Oh well. I'm sure there's another candidate if they've done any homework at all.

Maybe he wanted contractual assurances that he would not be fired in a year or 2.

He definitely was in the driver's seat.
It could have been money, contract guarantees, length, who knows?

Again, he seems to know what he wants and so far nobody has tickled his fancy.

Maybe he realized those making the decision were dived between him and another candidate. Thus the need for a second interview.

People wanted Kyle Shanahan as HC years ago, and said that we should have fired Mike Pettine and kept him ...... but I don't think he would have stayed even if we had offered him the job.

He went to San Francisco, and both he and GM John Lynch signed 7 year deals. They were all but guaranteed to get the time to get the team moving in the right decision.

He would not have received that here.

MKC (I know, I know) was just on 92.3 and said that as well.

She stated she believes Berry has been the guy all along and Paton, while a serious consideration, was likely their second choice and it's a good possibility that is the reason he pulled himself out of the running. Essentially, Paton knew the job wasn't his.

Trust the process!

I for one was wrong about Kyle. I didn't like him when he was with the Browns. I was vocal about not liking him, and I was WRONG.

Paton took the interview because of Stefanski.

I doubt he did that with the intention of screwing him around. First interview went well. The second was brass tax.

Paton wants to be a GM. Of course he is plotting his career. Working with KS made it attractive because of his relationship. KS was involved in the decision. He was the KS's guy.

After the second interview Paton had a clear picture of how decisions would be made. Haslam has final say over everything. Not the whole draft but anything that would be considered major. Free agency as well.

Baker may have been recommended by many but in the end Haslam had to ok that as well. That is why he is front and center in the draft.

He will sit in on everything. Act like he is just curious. But when it is time for the final decision it is his call.

KS, Depo, and the GM all report to him. All on equal footing below Jimmy.

Paton would not take a GM position without final approval authority on personnel decisions.

Completely understandable.

Haslam went along with Dorsey because Dorsey was a proven guy and his moves were popular. But in the end Haslam hated the press surrounding Freddie and the results. After that Dorsey lost leverage and power.

Paton wanted it verified. So in the second meeting he asked the tough questions. He found it not to his liking and pulled out.
