How dare we have a choice instead of having the government run our lives. saywhat

'Choice' is the argument of those that want to sabotage medicare for all to protect big insurance, big pharma, and stop procedure, device, medicine price controls. Retaining a 'choice' for those that can be scared keeps medicare-for-all from being successful by making the formula for who pays in more complex, making who any new rules would apply to more complex, making the lowering of prices with price controls and government negotiation all but impossible. But hey, as long as YOU have a choice to make us ALL keep spending way too much, then that's all that matters because there are special snowflakes that need to have their hands held on big game changing decisions.

I think Steyers might be my second choice behind Bernie right now. At least he seems 100% real. Then it would be Yang/Liz/Pete in that order. Of course Steyer and Yang have almost zero chance.

The broader question is valid.

Let’s say the senate stays GOP. What will Bernie propose that the republicans will vote for?

After admitting Trump was wrong (guilty), they didn't have the moral fortitude to vote guilty.

GOPers want to lower the cost of healthcare, they may not show full support for medicare for all but they will go after drug companies and start the infrastructure for government negotiated drug prices.

Infrastructure.

But your question holds true for any Dem, not just Bernie. So you can't paint just him in this box. remember how they did Obama? So Bernie will have to use executive orders and grassroots political pressure to get most things done. Once he's in office sharing his ideas and explaining exactly how he wants to do things, many working GOPers that are not hardcore political people will want the things he's offering, bank that.

Not really.

Klobuchar, Biden, and Pete have a much better chance of getting bipartisan support on policies than Bernie or warren, who you know is my top choice next to Pete.

And I would feel better if this was the traditional GOP. But it’s not. Whether or not trump gets voted out, the Republican Party has been transformed, maybe permanently (read: this generation). We already have a bunch of mini trumps in the senate and house.

He may still be. It will be interesting to see how many more people are like that woman in Iowa, smh. If he does win, I can't wait for the day he and his husband move in and all those bigots who voted for him and didn't know he was gay are surprised! lmao

Pete holds a major advantage in that he doesn’t throw his identity in the general public’s face. He has no problem stating he’s gay, but doesn’t go out his way to state it, like warren and Harris does about being a woman.

Also, he identifies with mid western values, is a combat veteran, and can show how progressive policies can also yield the conservative bases goals.

Trump would have to walk on egg shells trying to personally attack Pete. That’s a huge advantage.

Although I agree with you to some extent, do you seriously think Trump won't pummel him with insults on all of it? Trump will damn sure make sure everyone knows he's gay. He will use the Christian right to pound him on that. He will describe watching Pete and the first man/husband/gentleman in the White House. Bro, it will be a bloodbath no matter who the nominee is. I don't think He can hurt Bernie near as bad as Pete.

I hope he does. Which is why he probably won’t.

But I hope he does. I hope he steps on that land mine, because he won’t recover. You forget, evangelicals are completely outnumbered in this country. their numbers are Tanking by the year, and it’s completely their fault. Most people in this country are Christians “but”, not evangelicals.

I hope he brings up banning trans people in the military standing next to Pete. I hope he attacks the LBGT community standing next to Pete. I hope he tries to diminish Pete’s military service standing next to him.

I hope he does all of that on live TV.

Pete may actually have the best chance of beating Trump based on his actual merits. But, I have very little faith in the Democrats for having the guts to make him their candidate. And then after that, I worry about the hatred that so many people have about gay people.

So, I worry about the most electable man surviving hate. Times have not changed as much as people would like to believe regarding being gay in this country. Believe me.

I think Iowa was the best thing to happen to Pete, as now everybody’s eyeballs are on the DNC, waiting for them to botch another primary.

His showing in Iowa was a huge step forward. I think he has a chance to take New Hampshire as well.

So I dont think the Dems will block him, but I dunno. I think the establishment would prefer him over Bernie, however. I feel highly confident in saying that much.

As far as the national level, we’ll see. I agree that times hasn’t changed that much. I think gays have surpassed black Americans as being the most demeaned and discriminated against in this country.

But I also think the current atmosphere in America makes people not so much accepting of someone like Pete, but more of the “ill look past it cause crap has got to change for us”. That’s what conservatives did with trump. Not saying Pete is trump, but Pete has the ability to make people completely forget that he is indeed gay, and that’s a great thing.

Now, I dunno if you will agree with this, but IMO, Pete’s biggest challenge isn’t his sexual orientation, it’s getting minorities, specifically black Americans. People are hammering at his record as mayor, and it’s most certainly fair criticism. That’s what will keep him from getting the nomination.

But if he gets the nomination, all bets are off.

FWIW, Colorado has a gay governor and I don't think it was ever made a big deal of during the campaign. The media made a big deal about it when he won the election. I suppose there's a chance it could not be an issue.

Isn’t Colorado a blue state though?

We’re talking more about a Florida, Ohio, Michigan, penn, etc.

I hope we don't have to see it, but I have no doubt Trump will go there. He has no problem with displaying racism. He has no problem disrespecting honored military and their families. He has no problem making fun of handicapped people. He has no problem hating Muslims openly. What in the world would make you think 'gay' is a line he won't cross?

Because he values power over anything else.

And again, I hope he does all of it. I don’t expect him to, but I hope he tries to go after Pete on a personal level.

Pete isn’t Hillary. All she had to do was show up and she would’ve won, and trump did all of those attacks.

Pete can actually show up.

Love warren’s response. Just like military generals, these politicians get on stage, pander to the black community, and we just go round and round in circles.

Pete's a neoliberal who won't do enough economically. Sure, we'll get back to better social policy, yet we'll be bak to status quo financially.

There's also the dodgy record he has with African Americans.

I'll vote for him, but he doesn't excite me in the least.

I hate how the democratic party is beholden to their donors.

rofl

Yeah, everybody love their private insurance healthcare!

See, here's what you are too swallowed up by in your uber liberal pipe dream to even try and understand.

Medicare for those who want it, according to those who propose it, is that you take out the profits and it will give you much better coverage for less money.

So who in the private sector would not gravitate towards it? If it's everything you claim it will be, EVERYONE would choose it eventually.

I'm all for having medicare for everyone who wants it. But you wish to force it one everyone. You wish to take choices away from your fellow Americans. That's why it's a losing strategy.

And while you're at it, why don't you look at the past 60 years of presidential elections. Only four former senators have been elected. Two of them, both Obama and Nixon, only served three years in the senate. You have to go all the way back to JFK and LBJ to find senators with more time spent in the senate that became president.

There's a reason for that.

But hey, let's run a guy who will be 79 years old by election day, just had a heart attack and has served in the senate for 13 years. That sounds like a winner!

I have to support who I feel is the best candidate for the country. I don't care about a persons race or sexual preference.

You may be right. But regardless I have to support what's best for my country and in my viewpoint that's Mayor Pete.

Obama said this in the Audacity of Hope:

Quote:
"Increasingly I found myself spending time with people of means — law firm partners and investment bankers, hedge fund managers and venture capitalists. As a rule, they were smart, interesting people, knowledgeable about public policy, liberal in their politics, expecting nothing more than a hearing of their opinions in exchange for their checks. But they reflected, almost uniformly, the perspectives of their class: the top 1 percent or so of the income scale that can afford to write a $2,000 check to a political candidate. They believed in the free market and an educational meritocracy; they found it hard to imagine that there might be any social ill that could not be cured by a high SAT score. They had no patience with protectionism, found unions troublesome, and were not particularly sympathetic to those whose lives were upended by the movements of global capital."

"Still, I know that as a consequence of my fund-raising I became more like the wealthy donors I met, in the very particular sense that I spent more and more of my time above the fray, outside the world of immediate hunger, disappointment, fear, irrationality, and frequent hardship of the other 99 percent of the population — that is, the people that I’d entered public life to serve. And in one fashion or another"

Link

These are the people donating to Mayor Pete. These exact people who simply believe "hey, just try hard and you'll be okay!" Sure, their politics may be more liberal socially, but their economic policies look to engage in "the wealth will just trickle down!" tactics.

For you "uber liberal" nonsense, I will never apologize for wanting change for the majority of Americans rather than good social policy that keeps us numb to the ridiculous inequality gap in our country.

Let's see where the favoring big business has gotten us...

Reagan sure did good for us, didn't he!?

If you want to know why the DNC endorses this "socially liberal but economically favoring the 1%" model look to the third way which Dems ran on till 2016 when Trump ran on the same platform, but cranked up the prejudice by 1000%.

Look, be my guest if you want to prefer a candidate who favors the 1%. I know a plethora of individuals who would benefit a heck of a lot more, due to circumstances beyond their control, from a Bernie or Warren rather than "hey, at least I'm not overtly racist" type like Biden or Pete.

The same argument goes towards all of you who call yourself democrats. Why do we settle for less because we're afraid of "electability" or "what about donors" despite the fact that highly rated polls show Bernie can win.

Stand for your convictions. Are you for the 1% or the 99%?

We need to aspire to be more rather than settle for "hey, at least he's not super racist".
