OK, going to ask this here, because some of you seem to really be following this thing, and the media seems to "occasionally" over hype things. Some questions, myself and I'm sure many people would like just straight simple answers for. 1) What are the symptoms? 2) How do those differ from the regular flu, if at all? 3) What are the treatment options? 4) Does treatment require hospitalization, meds, etc? 5) What seems to be the average recovery time? Anyone else have any more to add, feel free. What I’ve come to understand... 1) It starts with a dry cough and fever. 2) Not much of a difference. 3) For most people with advanced symptoms, inhalers are used to open up (keep open) the airway. 4) For those with advanced symptoms hospitalization is needed because of the severe respiratory symptoms. aka pneumonia. 5) 5-7 days for the average person with non hospitalized type symptoms Most people without other medical frailties are able to fight it off at home. Stay hydrated, stay home. Post illness clean all surfaces in your house with a bleach solution of 1TBL bleach to 1 gallon of water.

I’ve also started reading about people becoming re-infected. Hence the importance of cleaning your home post illness. They think there may be a short window post illness of immunity. This may last 7 days or so as the body still has the antibodies it built up in place. Many viruses can re-infect... NORO virus is one such virus. So this is not unusual.

From what I know: 1) What are the symptoms? Similar to flu symptoms with respatory issues as well. Which is actually why they believe now the Virus has been in the Us for weeks, but Drs. and hospitals just were not testing for it. 2) How do those differ from the regular flu, if at all? Symptoms, not much. Except the flu on average has a .02% mortality rate, while the COVID-19 is about 2%. 3) What are the treatment options? Rest, fluids, and staying away from me 4) Does treatment require hospitalization, meds, etc? Depends on the severity and person. Case by case 5) What seems to be the average recovery time? 10-14 days is what I have heard. IF I am mistaken in any of these, please let me know. I know Prup has been tracking and following this thing, so he would be the go to for info.

This is exactly what I had suspected all along.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Live updates: Global coronavirus death toll surpasses 3,000; markets stage cautious recovery on stimulus hopesThe novel coronavirus continued its march around the globe Monday, despite travel restrictions aimed at curtailing its spread, but hopes of a coordinated monetary response by central banks lifted world markets following last week’s heavy losses. As the global death toll passed 3,000, South Korea said Monday it has confirmed 599 new cases, far higher than the daily tally reported in China. With 4,335 confirmed infections and at least 22 deaths, South Korea has the second-largest national caseload. However, it has tested more than 100,000 people, far more than have most nations. In the United States, where two deaths were reported over the weekend, tests have taken place at a far slower pace. A genetic analysis has suggested that the novel coronavirus, which causes a highly infectious respiratory disease called covid-19, has probably been spreading undetected for about six weeks in Washington state. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday took steps to sharply expand testing. Italy has more than 1,600 confirmed cases, while Iran surpassed 1,500, with 66 deaths. Travelers from both countries appear to have spread the virus to other nations in the Middle East and Europe. A French citizen was diagnosed with the virus in Senegal on Monday, marking the country’s first known case and only the second in sub-Saharan Africa. Elsewhere, Indonesia, one of the few large nations thought to be free of the virus, said Monday that it had two confirmed cases, while others were reported from Australia to India to Portugal. Here are the latest developments: South Korea announced 599 new cases, bringing its total to 4,335 with 22 deaths. In China, the number of new cases was 202, bringing its total to 80,026, including 2,912 deaths. The United States announced two deaths from covid-19 over the weekend, both in Washington state, and a new case was found in New York. The U.S. government has confirmed 87 coronavirus cases. Kirkland, Wash., has become a hub for the coronavirus response, as evidence suggests the virus may have spread undetected in the state for weeks. Following heavy losses on global markets last week, stocks recovered Monday as comments by the Bank of Japan chief stoked speculation of a coordinated global response from central banks. The turnaround comes amid fears that prolonged economic disruption due to the virus could trigger a worldwide recession. With cases soaring in South Korea, Italy and Iran, officials are expecting more cases in other countries. “It is no longer possible to absolutely prevent new cases coming in,” Brendan Murphy, Australia’s chief medical officer, told reporters Monday. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the day before that he expected the outbreak to “spread a bit more” in Britain, where there are 40 confirmed cases. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2020/03/02/coronavirus-live-updates/

Good information. I also really thought Florida's questions and the subsequent answers by Portland and will are especially helpful to the casual reader.
I really wasn't following this news at all. I checked on the first thread one slow night and it caught my attention. Purp is not one to overreact and his takes caused some concern. Thus, I wanted to learn more.
So again, thanks to all who are contributing.

18-46k is definitely worse than the flu.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

Pair that with the fact that we don't know how many actual people have had CV - since it seems they have been misdiagnosed. You can try to twist whatever you want, but the fact remains this is a serious health concern.

Once you’re better I’ll share that herb I offered in a different thread. Maybe show you some photos and share some stories from my travels since you’re afraid to leave your homeland to create your own.

If the same number of people become infected by COVID that get infected by the flu, the mortality number is scary high. That 18,000-46,000 gets a zero or two added to it. That’s significant.

Because its the RATE that is concern. .02 is a big difference from 2.0 From someone who has a young child, friends who have newborns, and someone whose parents are getting older; it is of concern. Just over the last few days, it has gone from CA, to RI, to NY, to FL. We also don't "face the flue" like this year in and year out, as this is about 20X deadlier than the flu.

Any stats on the ages and health condition of those that succumbed to this virus?
From what I read here, and little bit I catch when I do watch TV, it seems it's more of a threat to the older folks and those with already compromised immune systems.
Seems the biggest issue, again just what I gather, is that it spreads before the carrier even realizes they are sick.
I know at my work, every year it's and issue with people coming in sick. I understand you have work to do, but at least stay in your cubicle, don't walk around the office chatting and sneezing on everyone. And my company is pretty good about taking off for true sickness.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Sure, your company is. There are still a lot of companies out there that do not give sick time or PTO. You don't show, you don't get paid. So, its easy to tell Mary Jo to go home, but I don't think the person tell her that is going to pay her rent or for Mary Jo's son tuba lessons.

So, its easy to tell Mary Jo to go home, but I don't think the person tell her that is going to pay her rent or for Mary Jo's son tuba lessons. You both have a point. Many people don't get any paid time off or sick days. Many do. Let's face it, those working at a gas station or whatever, don't get that benefit. And let's also face that many people abuse pto. Where my wife works, they offer tremendous benefits. Not as good as gov't. jobs, but sick days - 5-6 a year. It used to be all you had to do was call before your shift started and say you were sick. Now? You need a doctors note that you are, in fact, sick. Employees also get 5 or 7 'personal' days off work. Unpaid, of course. Wife tells me quite often about people that, within 1 month of getting their personal days, people use them all. Company used to provide feminine hygiene products in the womens restrooms. They quit, because people were emptying the dispenser as soon as they were filled. It's nice of companies to offer benefits. It's sad when people abuse them. Wife's boss was amazed when she called and said "do you think I can come back to work early, as long as the surgeon clears me?" He said "What? I've NEVER had a call like this. Talk to HR." Wife called HR with the same question - If the surgeon says I can come back early, even part time, is the company ok with it? HR said "What??? You want to come back early? Yes, if you're cleared, we'd love to have you back early." Some people use and abuse benefits. Some don't.

CDC estimates from October 1, 2019, through February 22, 2020 The Flu. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm Let's play a game. Let us assume 45 million SARS-CoV-2 infections. That's the actual virus name. The disease it causes is COVID-19. First, yes, the current numbers as a direct comparison clearly show that the flu is a more likelycandidateright now, but,let me point out that the influenza mortality rate, at the upper end there, is 0.1% Now, based on current rates (3% mortalit), 45 million infected would result in: Just as many doctors visits, probably more as worries grow. 39,150,000 sick. Those not hospitalized will be sent to a home quarantine. That is people not in the workforce. Of that, roughly 7,830,000 will require hospitalization. 1,350,000 will be dead. So, yes, you do get to make the point that the flu is the larger immediate concern, but as you can clearly see, this this is no joke and requires immediate action so it doesn't get to the point where it is as prevalent as the flu. This isn't 2003 SARS, or MERS, or bird flu, whatever.... this one transmits pretty well and it isn't going to burn itself out.

Yes, corona is serious, but lets keep things in perspective.
We are a year away from a vaccine. The drug companies are working on treatment meds now.
Odds are they will develop treatments to lessen the effects of this thing very shortly. Treatment is where the money's is.
Scientists are still wondering if this thing fizzles out come Spring like most viruses.
Children don't seem to catch corona very easily.
According to Apple and Microsoft CEO's China manufacturing is coming back on line quickly so the supply chain will be catching up.
So wash your hands and wear your tin foil mask.

What I heard on NPR today was that we lost at least 3 weeks due to faulty test and inaction. Also, too many live pay to pay and have crap healthcare and no sick time, so they are going to go to work. And you can’t quarantine cities in this country like China and Italy did. And time will tell how it goes if they do what Japan did a couple days ago and close all schools for a month. They also said the cases in our country will be above 1000 probably by next week

Soon as they have a treatment, things will begin improving. Until then, we wash our hands and do what we can to slow its spread.

There are people on twitter posting how many ambulances have arrived at the nursing home in Seattle. There were 5 just today.
On NPR today, Kid out west went to doctor with flu, treated him but before he went home gave him a corona test. Took a day off school and was on his way to school when he got the call to go back home, you got Coronavirus. They quarantined the 4 kids he had seen since he went to the doctor. The medical person NPR was talking to immediately asked about their protocol saying the kid was carrying the virus way before he went to the doctor with flu symptoms and they should be checking out his contacts for a much longer time.

I think the last thread about this topic in the forum turned political which is against board rules. I also have noted that there is a new thread about it in the Political forum.
So, I was wondering if we could just have a thread about the COVID-19 w/out the political crap? There are a lot of people on here w/many contacts. It could be an informative thread w/news, updates, new findings, precautions, etc.
Anyone interested in that? I personally have no idea what the truth is about this virus.. But I do know that being prepared for the worst is NEVER a bad idea... Doing anything else is just dumb

My friends wife just cancelled their 7-day cruise because of this....Their cruise wasn't until late July. That to me is panic.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Cruises and trips have guidelines on reasons you are allowed to cancel, along with time frames. Its possible if they waited they would not be able to get their money back, etc.

Even for colds and flu, the last thing you will be wanting to do is drive to the store to buy things when you are sick. Traveling to buy diarrhea meds when you have diarrhea is a real pain in the... Food, water, meds, toilet paper, paper towels, prescriptions, etc should always be on hand for at least 2 weeks.

And one other thing. People have given up hand shaking in favor of the elbow bump. This crap has got to stop! They tell us to sneeze into our elbow and now people are bumping those sneeze zones into each other! Next they put their faces there to sneeze again! Come on people! Don't touch anyone!

Total deaths in Washington now at 9.

Total deaths in Washington now at 9. If it’s into the nursing home communities the numbers are going to climb. Significantly.
