NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah was on 92.3 The Fan this afternoon, and he said that "the buzz" at the Combine was Jack Conklin most likely signing with the Browns.

I'm guessing RTs are nearing as much money as LTs.

I'm also guessing addressing RT and keeping Baker upright is of import.

This is going to be one of the most interesting if not the most interesting FA period ever on many levels and this story is one of them ...

Trent’s good when on the field ... that hasn't been much at all for 3 or 4 years ...
he’s gonna want a new deal ... not gonna be cheap And who knows how much tread he has left on his tires ...
the skins aren’t gonna just give him away .... i wonder what its gonna take ...

Its gonna be interesting to see what market develops for him ....

Trading for Trent Williams is a very complicated situation with all of the ingredients involved that you have pointed out.

Signing Conklin, while very expensive is far more straight forward in regards to what you will get for your money.

As of this moment, I would favor signing Conklin and drafting a LT if one is there worth the draft pick at #10. At this point, it's all a bit of a gamble no matter how you approach it.

Pass on Trent Williams. He has not played a full season since 2013 and once traded, he's going to want a new deal.

The only one I can think of you may be talking about is Vaitai and he's actually a couple of years older than Conklin. One is 25 and the other is 27 so it's really not an issue either way.

He'll be 26 in August. 2019 was the end of his rookie deal.

Gimme Conklin and a OT at 10 and we’re light years better IMO

Yes. That and the fact that he is pretty much a perfect fit for what we'll be doing and has been playing at a high level is why he is so sought after... and the perfect solution for us.

He is still really young, he's skilled, athletic, and great in the run game.

Put him on the right side, draft whomever we feel is best at 10 for the Left and grab an OG in the 2nd or 3rd (Bitonio was a 2nd, and I don't think anyone regrets that one, at all).

Boom... OL fixed for the next five to seven years; rest of the draft goes to the D. smile

Another thread derailed.

.............................

Anyway, back to Tru's post. I don't think Murray is a bad player like some seem to be suggesting. I think he is a very good guy to have on your team because he can play SS, cover slot guys, and even play some corner in zone coverages.

I don't know that the Browns should spend money in FA in replacing

I am all for going after Conklin. He's a very good player.

I think Williams has some issues. He'll want a big contract. No thanks.

Jason Peters is an option. He's really, really old and he won't be cheap. He could be a 1 year and possibly 2 year band aide.

I agree. I’d rank them in terms of my interest: Conklin, Peters, Williams.

I agree. Conklin is young and very good.

With a run game and emphasis on play action, a solid RT is arguably more important than a LT. At minimum, as important.

You need both. Lets get the stud RT FA rather than a old LT vet and not pass on a rookie LT with stud projectability.

Or worse, sign a old OT who is still good and draft a LT. I don't want to fix 1 position with two players. Lets fix 2 positions with 2 players.

When used as a adjective the word has one meaning. When used as a noun, it has another.

He was using it as a noun. You as a adjective.

Non comparable.

I will just say that anyone who thinks Peppers and the pick are worth more than OBJ is either lying or delusional. Almost all football experts agree that Dorsey stole OBJ from Gettleman and that the latter is an utter fool.

I agree ... given our PA game and zone blocking scheme (much like MIN and SF employed), I’d say getting the best OTs is a premium

I don't disagree.

Not sure what I might have said to get that response?

I do take issue with the Zeitler trade. I know they were all rolled in to one for ease of paperwork, but we lost that deal.

I hope OBJ stays on the team. I think Stefanski is a good offensive coach and both OBJ and Jarvis will thrive.

Both of those kids have a bond. The bond is college deep. Young kids practicing in the HOT Louisiana summers, dreaming about be a pro. Each wanting to quit because of the heat and strain, but each urging the other on.

Both played for Les Myles. A great coach, but a tough coach.

If you want to play at LSU, this is what you have to do.

I am only using LSU since we have LSU teammates playing at receiver.

All good coaches push players. Demand just a little bit more than they think they can give.

I don't think many players actually liked Bear Bryant or Woody Hayes until a few years after they graduated or cycled out.

The Junction Boys was a good movie, even if a bit brutal.

I 100% agree with this. Dorsey was magical with this trade.

That makes a lot of sense Ballpeen. Fix the RT position with a known stud and get a veteran serviceable LT. Draft his replacement and roll with it.

Report: Browns will explore Trent Williams, Jason Peters in search for a LT
Charean Williams
ProFootball Talk on NBC SportsMarch 5, 2020, 8:20 PM EST

Joe Thomas retired after the 2017 season. Three offseasons later, the Browns still are trying to replace him.

The connections to Trent Williams and Jason Peters are obvious, and Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports the team will explore both as they cast “a wide net in their search” for a left tackle.

Peters, 38, will become a free agent and the Eagles announced Thursday the sides have “mutually agreed” to let him hit the market. Browns General Manager Andrew Berry spent last season in Philadelphia as assistant G.M. to Howie Roseman.

Williams, 31, had Bill Callahan as his position coach in Washington for four seasons (not counting 2019 when Williams didn’t play). Callahan now coaches in Cleveland.

The Browns, with former General Manager John Dorsey, tried to trade for Williams at the October deadline.

Washington now has given Williams permission to seek a trade.

2013 is the year they found the lump on Trent's head that turned out to be cancer.

2013 he started 16 games.
2014 15 games
2015 14 games
2016 12 games
2017 10 games
2018 13 games
2019 DNP

He has had three surgeries on his head to remove the cancer.

I forgot to put "j/c." Yours was the last post. I was referring more to 4Life's and some others who keep thinking the OBJ trade was bad.

Especially pricey to us and others like us who need desperately to run the ball better and keep the QB clean. If the Ts improve, we should get better in a hurry.

That’s the thing, he’s gonna want a big contract as well. It’s a steep price and a gamble

For run plays you are better off looking for guards and a center. OT are good for down field blocking. De's tend to rush outside leaving room on the 4-5 hole on each side. If they close down, the 6 is open.

I am talking option type football, but the NFL is going more option, so we might as well speak it. It's what the modern players have heard since high school.

Part of this is FB use or avoidance to boot. Zone blocking goes well beyond some "throwback" stuff when I played against single wing team when younger. We need to be quicker at a number of things. Hope we get some younger ability. The size and speed of linemen has morphed the run game. Guys like Chubb do not hurt that either. thumbsup

About Conklin, the common opinion is that he is very good, possibly elite. I'm not saying otherwise. I do have some questions I'd be interested in getting answers for.

He wasn't given the 5th year extension by the Titans he was eligible for. Any insights why?

At his age and with his production he's been allowed to pursue free agency. I think I saw some reasoning for this but I don't want to go from memory. Does anybody have an explanation for the Titans allowing him go on the market?

Now that I think about it. These are two questions that probably have the same answer. Still, I'm curious.

Titans apparently have about $50M in cap space with 4 key free agents, along with 18 other lesser FAs. Their key free agents are Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill, Conklin, and Logan Ryan. Henry and Tannehill, according to the article linked below, will take up around $44M between them. Unless the Titans cut quite a bit of cap, they can't really afford Conklin or Ryan, assuming they want to keep Henry and Tannehill.

Thanks for the link. I thought guard's questions were good and I was speculating that Henry and Tannehill would be very expensive. I did not know about Logan Ryan though.
