Bolsonaro slams virus 'hysteria' as Brazil confirms first death
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro condemned what he called "hysteria" over the coronavirus pandemic Tuesday, as South America mos populous nation confirmed its first death, while Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro declared a state of emergency.

Flying in the face of mounting global alarm over the pandemic, the far-right president lashed out at containment measures he said would hurt the economy.

"People are acting like it's the end of the world," he said in an interview with Radio Tupi.

I have a feeling that Brazil will go up like dry tinder.

South Korea reports 93 new cases
South Korea has also given an update on its numbers. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there were 93 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing total infections to 8,413.

While slightly more than the 84 recorded on Tuesday, it's still the fourth day in a row that the country has reported fewer than 100 new infections.

So, South Korea is actually getting control of this thing. They are testing anyone and everyone.

On the news tonight, I actually heard a woman from MetroHealth Hospital - as spokesperson, mind you - saying that she wasn't sure what the value would be in testing people without symptoms!!

We are well and truly screwed.

Title is glorious.

Also, Montenegro’s infrastructure can politely be described as struggling. Let’s hope it doesn’t spread rapidly there.

When they close the Vegas Casinos???

I guess "money doesn't talk and BS does walk. rofl

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak’s unprecedented bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus by ordering nonessential businesses, including casinos, to close will affect 440 licensed resorts in the state.

There also are 1,977 licenses for establishments with 15 slot machines or fewer at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants and taverns.

“From the start, the resort industry’s priority has been the health and safety of our employees, guests and fellow residents,” said Nevada Resort Association President Virginia Valentine. “We recognize Gov. Sisolak and his medical advisory team have given careful and thoughtful consideration to this decision, and we understand their actions are in the best interest of public health at this time.”

Station Casinos issued a memo Tuesday evening saying it will be temporarily closing all 20 of its Las Vegas properties per Sisolak’s order.

The company had told the Review-Journal Monday that it had planned to keep its casinos open.

According to a statement addressed to all Station Casino team members from Station Casinos President Richard Haskins, all gaming operations will be closed by midnight Tuesday. All hotel operations will close by 6 p.m. Tuesday, and all other non-gaming operations will be closing by noon on Wednesday.

The company said it will continue to offer regular pay and health benefits to all hourly and salaried full-time team members through April 30, and asked staff to continue to report to work as scheduled.

“We are working closely with other gaming companies, federal legislators and the administration to achieve financial relief for those workers and businesses in the hospitality industry that have been, or will be, adversely impacted by this global pandemic.”

Sisolak’s order follows the issuance of executive orders and gaming regulatory decisions to close properties in six other states that offer casino gambling.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Sunday ordered that state’s casinos, race tracks and simulcast betting facilities closed by Monday while regulatory bodies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois had previously issued the same directive.

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.

I am no expert, but I hope people don't try and get masks.

Allow them to be distributed to health care workers like my wife, who are going to have to be exposed to carriers close up and personal.

My wife was telling me today how an elderly patient who was in for an elective cataract surgery coughed on her.

Elective surgeries? Stop them.

Masks: Let the health care folks wear them.

Let's not be selfish. Please?

Probably sold out everywhere, actually... but, you can search Amazon for N95 or N99.

I wouldn't, though. Supply is severely constrained right now and hospitals need them more than I do.

Yep. My brother is a nurse anesthetist in NY and they are already holding meetings discussing moving them back to ICU nurses as an hall hands on deck approach. Elective procedures being postponed. As of now, elective surgery patients are no longer permitted visitors. Drop off the patient and leave. Only visitors permitted are if a loved one is dying or the father of a wife/gf delivering.

Single entrance point for all patients. Healthcare staff completely separate entrances.

My cousin is an E.R. doctor in TX and they are going through similar procedures. Sent me a copy of an email he received from hospital admin that had a final sentence that read... "We will attempt to maintain a full workforce for as long as possible."

I can only imagine what the next three weeks are going to look like.

Not sure what you are unclear about? I'm saying that health care workers should get the masks instead of private citizens because they are almost certainly going to be exposed to virus much more than others.

Is that a debate?

No doubt.

My brother's hospital has required all healthcare staff shave facial hair so that can be properly fitted and sealed with PPE.

There have been certain models that show if extreme measures are not taken, you could see anywhere from 8%-15% of the population 70 and over killed by the virus. It's unfathomable.

I'd ground all flights and put a wall around FL with nonsense they've been up to lately. Clearwater Beach. Disney World. It's idiotic. Quarantine the nation.

Once you informed us that your brother was a CRNA, I relayed that information to my wife. She says they are all upset, but what can they do?

I am glad that your brother's hospital is being proactive.

Just frustrating on my end, especially considering my wife's age. It's like they don't give a damn about her. And yeah folks.............it's like she said: "it's just business."

Yeah, my brother is only 36 and in good health and just assumes he'll contract the virus given his position and close contact. In the end, he said this is what I signed up for.

He does not work directly for the hospital, but as part of an anesthesia group.

I can't believe your wife's hospital is so far behind or outright ignoring it.

Have you considered just telling her not to go in? Tough decisions and I understand the financial ramifications.

Fortunately, my wife is a stay at home mom and my company (partner with my dad) can work from home and can endure downtime.

I do understand her point. Just because you don't have it today doesn't mean you won't get it tomorrow or the day after.

We can't test everybody, every day. I still go out some. We need to go to the store now and then. I still use drive-thru windows. You just have to pick and choose your spots. Some hours of the day pose less risk than others.

Maybe we need to mandate isolation for people over 50. They are at the highest risk.

My hospital has cancelled all elective surgeries and procedures. We only have 2 entrances open where everyone who enters gets their temp taken. Absolutely no visitors except in dire cases. Vendors are limited to those deemed absolutely necessary. The cafeteria has no self service areas. We have a drive thru testing area set up over a hundred yards away from the main hospital buildings. Near this area there's some police contraption on a trailor with what looks like a large flagpole and some type of sensors at the top. We have no idea what this is. Our communication portal is updated several times a day with new changes. It is absolutely strange. What are usually bustling hallways are empty. The look on everyone's face is startling.

Just about anyone that isn't absolutely required to have direct patient care will be working from home, and I was told yesterday to be prepared to work from home. I have really mixed feelings about this, as I don't want to desert my coworkers who I've worked with for decades and have been through many trying times with. I've probably spent more time with them than I have with my own family. About 75% of my job involves working with insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid via phone/fax/email/web portals. Our IT department is overwhelmed trying to set everyone up to be able to do work from home, and it will be a challenge to set up the communication requirements for my job.

I really hope anyone that thought this thing was being overblown is changing their tune, because it is definitely real on the front lines.

According to this report/study if we did nothing at all we would have 2.2 Million deaths in the US. BUT Doing everything we are doing and some, only cuts that in half to 1.1 Million deaths by the time this plays out. This was posted previously in one of the threads on the virus by another poster.

If we had all the test kits and she said that, I would be outraged as well. I believe the supply is still in a state where we have to ration them.

Ok. I'm pissed. I know of 3 people (not hospital patients) that have had fevers and a cough, and they were refused covid testing because they haven't travelled outside the country or been in contact with someone who has. They did do flu screens and chest xrays. No wonder our numbers are low. The testing process is a joke so far.

I didn't read your article (yet), but that's a curious conclusion. I mean, isn't the main thing (ex. Italy) about flattening the curve? Same amount of infections (or even more), but spread over a much longer time results in much fewer deaths.

Is the article saying we're still not doing enough to flatten the curve?
