AOC hits Cuomo on coronavirus response that gives 'preferential treatment' to wealthy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Gov. Andrew Cuomo of exacerbating racial and class divides by suspending mortgage payments during the coronavirus pandemic but not extending the same moratorium to renters.

“If you called for a suspension or moratorium on mortgage payments, then we should also call for that same treatment on rent payments," Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday on WNYC's "The Brian Lehrer Show."

"We’re kind of creating a class and race issue. We're essentially rewarding and offering preferential treatment to landowners and folks who are more wealthy, and we're not offering that same kind of relief to renters.”

They are not at the top of the curve; cases counts are still increasing and depending where you are-NYC says they think the peak will happen in another 2-3 weeks with new cases. It takes 5 days for the symptoms to kick in and then within 1-2 weeks, if you get it bad you will go on a ventilator.

And in a normal ICU stay, you would be in there for 3 or 4 days. With Covid, you need to be on a vent for up to 2 weeks. Unless they split the tubing, you have 1 vent for 1 person for up to 2 weeks. Gov Cuomo thinks that at the peak in a few weeks, he will need another 30-40 thousand; he has some in storage waiting for where they need to be sent.


And a couple other general items;
supposedly, a couple governors said that they have inquired about getting more ventilators from the federal stockpile and were told "there are no more", even after they were promised


AND
there is a WSJ article from NYU Langone health system that has told ER doctors that they have sole discretion on whether to place patients on ventilators to "withhold future intubations" and the state of New York is coming up with options on what to do if they run low on ventilators specifically but other PPE-on how to ration and who gets to live and who gets to die.

That was Cuomo explaining the stockpile. They already have ventilators in the hospitals that are hard hit today. They are creating a central warehouse 'stockpile' to keep excess ventilators and equipment now so they can manage where to ship them as the cases climb. The reasoning is to get them to the different hospitals around New York on an as needed basis, so none are just sitting in a busy hospital being unused while another hospital is in dire need.

From Worldometer, there were a few more cases today than yesterday and about 25 more deaths than yesterday

Hopefully after all this..this country can start being a manufacturing country again and start becoming more dependent on U.S made stuff and stop relying on another country to provide the needs necessary to keep this country safe and healthy.

I guess you just haven't been following the news. You don't wait until the day you need them to ask for them. Even the CDC in their news conferences alongside the president are predicting 100,000 to 200,000 deaths in the United states.

The idea is to keep them in a central location going out to individual hospitals based on need as they need them. We can all see what waiting until you need something in order to act has gotten us. We were late on getting the tests out. We are running short on masks. That's what happens when you wait until a crisis is in its major stages before you do anything.

Cuomo is using the very same models on the death rate that Fauci is putting out while standing beside Trump in his daily news conferences to try and have them there before they are needed to stay ahead of what is coming.

And yes, it makes perfect sense.

A second pastor has been charged with violating public orders against large gatherings

For the second time in two days, police have charged a pastor with defying public orders against large gatherings by holding church services with hundreds of members.

On Tuesday police in suburban Baton Rouge, Louisiana, issued Pastor Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church a misdemeanor summons for six counts of violating the governor's executive order barring large gatherings.
"Instead of showing the strength and resilience of our community during this difficult time, Mr. Spell has chosen to embarrass us for his own self-promotion," said Central Police Chief Roger Corcoran Tuesday in a statement.

"Mr. Spell will have his day in court where he will be held responsible for his reckless and irresponsible decisions that endangered the health of his congregation and our community," Corcoran added.

Spell, in a Facebook Live video after being served the summons at his church by two police officers, maintained his defiant stance.

"We have not broken any law. We will not break any law," Spell said.
"We will continue to have church," he continued. "This is a government overreach. They are asking us as a government to stop practicing our freedom of religion. And we have a mandate from God to assemble and to gather together and to keep doing what we're doing."

As of Tuesday afternoon Louisiana had recorded more than 5,200 cases of coronavirus and 239 deaths, by CNN's count.
Since President Donald Trump declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency, most churches, mosques, synagogues and temples have temporarily shut down.

But there have been a few outliers.

On Monday, Florida sheriff's deputies arrested another Pentecostal pastor, Rodney Howard-Browne, who has likewise continued to host large services at his megachurch in Tampa despite public orders urging residents to stay home.

Howard-Browne's attorney says the church abided by social distancing guidelines and accused local lawmakers with infringing upon his religious liberty.

Spell said his Life Tabernacle Church in Central, Louisiana, drew about 1,000 people to its services on March 22, in part by busing people in from across five parishes. He also has been holding services at the church on Tuesdays.

Spell has told CNN he believes the pandemic is "politically motivated."
He also told CNN several members of his congregation have been suspended from their jobs after their employers saw videos of them worshiping at Spell's church and were concerned about the spread of the coronavirus.
Corcoran said numerous officials, including the sheriff, state police, fire marshal and an evangelical adviser to the White House have all tried to persuade Spell to close his doors over the past two weeks.

But "Spell made his intentions to continue to violate the law clear," Corcoran said.

"This is not an issue over religious liberty, and it's not about politics," the police chief added. "We are facing a public health crisis and expect our community's leaders to set a positive example and follow the law."

White House projects 100K to 240K coronavirus deaths as Trump tells US to prepare for ‘very painful two weeks’

The White House coronavirus task force on Tuesday pleaded with Americans to abide by the administration’s extended social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of coronavirus as a somber President Trump told Americans to brace for “a very painful two weeks" and warned of thousands of more virus-related deaths.

"The surge is coming, and it’s coming pretty strong," the president said in the White House briefing room in a lengthy press conference that lasted more than two hours.

The extension of the social distancing guidelines comes after Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and other public health officials on the White House coronavirus task force ominously warned that even if the U.S. were to continue to do what it was doing -- keeping the economy closed and most Americans in their homes -- the coronavirus could still leave 100,000 to 240,000 people in the United States dead and millions infected.

Without any measures in place to mitigate the contagion's spread, those projections jump to between 1.5 and 2.2 million deaths from COVID-19.

It just occurred to me why Trump has had this sudden change of heart and is no longer bucking the science. He has mentioned his friend in a coma several times now... Trump realized his money and power can't protect him. That thought must be very intimidating to Trump, a lethal invisible enemy that doesn't care about money. Just thinking out loud.

At the first formal press briefing with his coronavirus task force on Feb. 26, President Trump said he didn’t agree with the assessment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that an outbreak was “inevitable” in the United States, noting that the country had just 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and no deaths attributed to the virus.
“When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done,” Trump said at the time. “We have it so well under control. I mean, we really have done a very good job.”
Ever since, Trump has been moving the goalposts on the pandemic, and on Sunday, with coronavirus cases and deaths mounting, Trump said that keeping the U.S. death toll between 100,000 and 200,000 would be “a very good job.”
“If we could hold that down, as we’re saying, to 100,000, that’s a horrible number, maybe even less, but to 100,000 — so we have between 100- and 200,000 — we altogether have done a very good job,” Trump said during a task force press briefing in the White House Rose Garden.
The president repeatedly cited a projection by medical experts on the task force that as many as 2.2 million people would have died if the administration had not instituted social distancing and other mitigation measures.
“These are 2.2 million people would have died if we didn’t do what we’re doing,” Trump said at the briefing, during which he cited that number 16 times. “And now we’re looking at numbers that are going to be much, much, much lower than that. And it makes everything we’re doing feel much better to me.”

In an interview with NBC’s “Today” show on Monday, Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House task force, predicted there would be up to 200,000 deaths in the U.S. even “if we do things almost perfectly.”
According to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the pandemic, there have been more than 143,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States — more than any other country — and over 2,500 deaths attributed to the virus.
There are more than 740,000 confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide, and more than 35,000 deaths.
The president’s latest comments come amid criticism that his administration was too slow in responding to the coronavirus threat — and that he sought to downplay the risks against the advice of doctors and medical experts as the outbreak took hold.
In press briefings and tweets, Trump has repeatedly contrasted his administration’s handling of the coronavirus with the Obama administration’s response to the swine flu epidemic, which was overseen by then-Vice President Joe Biden. As many as 17,000 Americans died in that outbreak in 2009–2010.
His last tweet on the subject came on March 15.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk just announced that his company has FDA-approved ventilators, in a tweet. Musk and Tesla plan to ship ventilators worldwide within delivery regions, at absolutely no cost, including shipping.

Elon Musk — the CEO of Tesla — has announced that he and his company will ship sorely-needed FDA-approved ventilators to Tesla's delivery regions for free, with no charge for shipping whatsoever, according to a recent tweet.



"We have extra FDA-approved ventilators. Will ship to hospitals worldwide within Tesla delivery regions. Device & shipping cost are free. Only requirement is that the vents are needed immediately for patients, not stored in a warehouse. Please [let] me or @Tesla know."

Elon Musk's ventilators: unknown quantity, shipped globally

Judging from Tesla's interactive "Find Us" webpage, it looks like delivery regions include countries in North America; U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Much of Europe is also within Tesla's delivery region, and in Asia, the countries of Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea could also see free deliveries shortly.

However, Tesla has not said precisely how many ventilators it can offer, or how it will assign priority to requests, according to Reuters. Governments across the planet have asked aerospace companies and automakers to help them acquire or manufacture ventilators and other medical equipment amid a wild coronavirus outbreak, which more than 770,000 people globally have contracted, with more than 37,500 dead.

Earlier this week, the automaker Ford Motor Co. said it will move forward with the production of 50,000 ventilators through the next 100 days in a Michigan-based plant, in a joint project with General Electric's healthcare unit — after which the partnership will develop 30,000 per month as needed for coronavirus patient treatment.

Last week, Musk donated more than 1,200 ventilators to California officials for use in hospitals treating coronavirus patients, according to a local news website. Specifically, Musk said the devices were bought in China and airlifted to the American state, tweeting: "China had an oversupply, so we bought 1255 FDA-approved ResMed, Philips & Medtronic ventilators on Friday night and airshipped them to LA. If you want a free ventilator installed, please let us know!"

I will say it was quite a change in tune when Trumpsters went from "socialist medicine/Obama death panels" to "How quick can we kill grandma to help the economy".
