Cribbs wins AFC honor

The word is out on Joshua Cribbs.
Cribbs was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September Wednesday, mostly for his work as a kickoff return man.The former quarterback who had never returned a kickoff until he signed with the Browns as an undrafted rookie in 2005 leads the NFL with a 549 kickoff return yards and a 34.3 kickoff return average through four games.
Cribbs scored the third kickoff return touchdown of his career with a 99-yarder at Oakland on Sept. 23. He set up a touchdown with an 85-yard return the previous week against the Bengals and has five returns of 30-plus yards.
He has also has handled punt return duties, with three returns for 33 yards, and also ranks second on the team with 6 special teams tackles.
Cribbs currently ranks second in franchise history in all-time kickoff return yards with 3,137 and needs only 49 yards to pass Dino Hall (3,185) and become the team's all-time leader in kickoff return yards. His third touchdown return tied a franchise record set by Bobby Mitchell.

I know I'm a homer, but the guy has earned it. If he keeps it up he should make the Pro Bowl, espicially doing both KR and PR.

I bought my son ONE Browns jersey for Christmas last year. I had to special order it through the NFL website. I bought him a #16 jersey with Cribbs on the back.
Cribbs is living proof that you should not listen to the critics. He is a product of heart, passion, and hard work.
My son also has a framed 16" x 20" Cribbs (Kent State) photo hanging on his bedroom wall.

Cribbs is possibly the most unassuming guy on the team.. doesn't talk a lot, says only what's needed to be said and then on Sunday,, goes out there and pretends he's a Kamakazi.... Cracks me up..
Talk about the REAL DEAL! He deserves whatever accollades he gets, and then some.

I think Cribbs is the most exciting player we have. From the time he tocuhes the football until he's tackled [if at all] my heart is nin my throat.
He doesn't do to bad WR either.

Cribbs is not only a phenomenal player but a phenomenal teammate. I think it was during the Raiders game (on the "sights of the game video"), when they showed him after the kickoff return, that he said "that was all about the blocking. that was all about my blockers." Congrats Josh! and do keep it up.

Seems to me he would be used a TON more on the offense, and not just special teams...
Maybe they just want him at full speed come kickoff / punt returns, and think putting him in a few plays offensively will drain him.. I dont know.. Seems to me he could handle it.

Likley, he hasn't earned it yet.
Being a rock star at kick returns does not equal earning a spot as a WR.. not a chance. It has earned him the other chances he's been getting with gadget plays though... and I have no doubt in my mind that as long as he continues to improve and do well with the chances that he is given, that his role will increase.
Of course, it could also just boil down to the coaches not wanting to tire him out. His value as a well rested and ready to rock KR is currently FAR more valuable to us than any role he might have as a 3rd or 4th WR.

Off the top of my head:
Deon Sanders - good returner bad reciever
Dante Hall - Good returner bad reciever
Devin Hester - Good returner, bad reciever (so far)
Josh Cribbs - Good returner, probably not a quality reciever.

I think we'll see him more in a gimmick role than anything on offense, but I think you're 100% correct in that they don't want to tire him out... He's had some big time runbacks and it seems has more than one big one a game.

That's some pretty lofty company for Cribbs. I sure hope he live up to it. It's exciting to watch a guy like that leave it all on the field.

I'm guessing that it's because he isn't necessarily a very good route runner, and probably needs a lot of work on picking up defenses (hot routes, etc.). The kid is a tremendous athlete, so he has those skills. He just needs to get the WR skills taught to him. JMHO
I think the thing that impresses me most about Cribbs is not only is he dangerous on every kick return (jury's still out for me on his punt return abilities), but he is intricate in almost every special teams tackle. I can't believe he only has 6 tackles on special teams. I swear he is in on every play.
It's nice to know you're going to start every drive at the 35 or better. Imagine the confidence level that gives to the offense. Then, also, if you go three and out, we have good enough punters (Zastudil and Methuselah) that we can start off the game winning the field position competition.

I've seen them cut to a scene of him on the sidelines after he makes a return and more than once he's hitting the oxygen and looking like a man who is about to go up in spontaneous human combustion. This is happening while the offense is out on the field unless he just took one to the house. Given the level of intensity he puts into his returns and a few gimmick plays, I'm not sure he's got enough to give to be a WR.
I'm sure glad we got him and the team saw value in keeping him around.

IIRC, Cribbs also has a pretty nasty asthma problem, so that probably affects things as well.

No, that wasn't him. My boy has never been to a Browns game. He is only 8. He is not old enough to properly handle all of the disappointment that goes along with being a fan of all things Cleveland.
