Must be nice to live in your ivory tower. How taking an economy that was doing 70mph down the interstate than dropping the transmission out of it by slamming it in to Park is choosing the economy over people is anyone's guess. 10+ million people unemployed in a span of 2 weeks is choosing the economy over people?
We elect these individuals to come up with plans for a proper response. A response that will equalize the results for the 1% and the 99%. It's obvious the initial actions of the response favored the 1%.

The economy IS people. More lives stand to be ruined by the actions that have been taken so far than had literally nothing been done and we hit that 1-2 million death toll.
So we need an economy that works for all Americans regardless of race, gender, creed, sexual orientation, social class, etc. The economy mainly worked best for rich white Americans before this crash.

There's a lot of people suffering because they're told their suffering mightsave lives. Maybe you guys could be decent enough to spare a little sympathy for them?
There's obvious data that shows social distancing saves lives. Look at the rate of cases and deaths compared between Ohio and Florida. This saves lives.
Could you spare some sympathy for a large amount of Americans who were getting screwed over before this pandemic?
Could you spare some sympathy to stop worshipping at the foot of numbers from the Dow Jones, S&P, and NASDAQ numbers? Never knew worshipping money was a core tenant of any religion.
I understand your angst, but try asking a dead fellow how much good his money is doing him now.
Try asking an "alive fellow" if he would trade his life in return for his 7 year old son and 4 year old daughter don't have to live on the street with no roof over their head while they starve to death....
People and businesses should have been given a choice, if they want to assume the risk to feed their family they should have been allowed to. The forced shuttering of the economy is an outrage.
Did we shutdown the whole country before we a small pox vaccine?
Did we shutdown the whole country before we had a Polio Vaccine?
Did we shutdown the whole country before we had a Flu Vaccine?
Do you realize smallpox killed between 20 and 60% of those it infected? it was thousands of times worse than conrona...we didn't shut down the whole country over it.
this is absolute insanity, its insane to shutter everything over a disease. People and businesses should have been given a choice.
You can't have a nation without an economy. The entire Social Contract is pretty much dependent on "Government enforces property rights and protects our assets, in return we create businesses to feed our families and pay taxes to government" we have completely reneged on the Social Contract that is the basis for a country to exist and then expect people to just accept being driven into poverty.
unbelievable
Driving the people into poverty is the last step needed to foist an authoritarian oppresive regime on the people.

You're oversimplifying the problem. Who allowed families to work for a wage that wouldn't protect them in times of need like this? Who was responsible for coming up with a social safety net in times of emergency?

...and we wonder why science education is in the state it is...

Because during this time we cared more about profits over people.

the Social Contract
The social contract has always been broken. What do you know about the rights and opportunities available for someone who isn't a rich white male?

We've been doing this more and more since Reagan was president. Where have you been since the 80s? Mars?
Then there was Jade Helm, Pizzagate and the birther movement as well.
You see, there are three things all Americans want. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The last two don't make any difference without the first one.
What is your acceptable death toll for a better economy?

Did you think of this before voting Republican? Doesn't matter who does what at this point, we're going to need a guy like Bernie to get us through this. Trump or Biden, which one handles the fallout better? lol neither.
Do you think you are the only one worrying about their kids? I mean I wish the best for you, but there were families getting ruined every damn day before this and they had kids too. Homeless kids, hungry kids, none of that is new in America, where have you been? Some ivory tower?
Seriously though, I understand what you are saying and we are in the same boat. But I think opening things up too fast will be a huge mistake because we have been lucky so far. tens-hundreds of thousands more could die. There will be no vaccine for at least a year. In my case, catching this virus is most likely a death sentence. Assuming you are younger and in decent health you might figure that's no big deal, but some of us do think it's a big deal.
And I don't want a depression either... especially not one worse than the great depression. But if my only choices are dead or broke, I choose broke because at least there I have a fighting chance.

If it wasn't so tragic it would be funny.
550,000+ homeless on the streets in the USA before the Covid 19 crisis.... and Covid 19 has done little to impact their numbers or increase them. But suddenly you are concerned about them because you *thought* you had a neat angle?
Was it you or someone else that said it would have been better to let 1 or 2 million die and keep the economy on track?
Pffft. Very compassionate and Christian of you.

The more things change the more they stay the same.
Kind of reads like people are ignoring the non-essential bans and not closing. My wife got some stuff from Joann fabrics this week, in store. I'm not sure how they are essential, especially after hobby lobby got shut down.

I’ve stopped at JoAnn’s twice in the past month. They’re doing brisk business in the mask making materials realm. Finding enough elastic to make quantities of face masks has been the challeng for me an my peers. Thankfully we scored some and have had community members, my girlfriend’s mom, her neighbor, etc. making them for my hospice team and the general community. I’ve got a buddy that Facebook posted a photo he took this morning while out walking. Someone had posted a sign in their yard, “Free Masks, if you need one”. On the sign was a bunch of hooks with ziplock baggied masks hung from them. All labeled with sizes ranging from child to larger adult. I thought that was awesome. If I end up with a few more donated masks I’ll likely consider touching base with neighbors to see if they have them or putting out a similar sign.
Nahhh .... I will simply ask you. Do you think POTUS has total and complete authority as Trump said ... and by that implication there shall be no checks and balances?
The more things change the more they stay the same.
However, I don't think any of you "really" understand the gravity of the situation we are in economically....gas is like 1.30 a gallon and dropping.....
We all understand it. What good is money if you die before you spend it.
I'm pretty sure that everybody wants to see an opening of business and lives.
To say we don't understand kinda means you have your priorities messed up

What Trump has is the power of the purse. Just like when the feds demanded every state reduce the speed limit to 55. Sure, you can refuse to do it. But the feds can cut your funding off if you don't comply.
Here's the funny part. When it came to protecting the life of Americans his answer was it should be left to the states, to governors and mayors. He was a cheerleader, yada, yada, yada.
When it comes to lifting those protections from the American people? He acts like a dictator.
I'm willing to wait and see exactly what he means by and what his actions are to reopen economy. I mean what will that even look like?

Honestly, I don't think Trump will "open" it up too soon. Sounds like he is seeing the bigger picture and listening to the governors/experts. I think all his "total authority" bluster is him feeling disrespected and insecure. I'm not saying he won't get a burr up his butt and do something stupid or too early, but I think part of him has wrapped around the severity of being wrong or rash in either direction.
I look for them to do this piece mill. Low impact areas first then a period of measure, then some more and measure, etc. The last thing I think they want is more egg on their faces right now. People are already attributing the death count to Trump directly on one side and the collapsing economy on the other. It's a tough spot to be in IMHO.
That said, we are talking about Trump and you never know what he's going to do from day to day or who was the last person in his ear guiding the rudderless ship that is his mind.
I certainly hope you're right. I have no way of knowing. When you have a president that contradicts himself repeatedly, you never know what you're going to get from one day to the next.

lol, he's a silverspoon trust fund baby bro, what did you expect? He's never worked a day in his life. Everything has been handed to him or he just takes it. Look at how he screws contractors and even the cities he stiffs with bills. You don't do that as working people because you would end up in court or in jail. But he gets away with it on the regular, not because he's special but because he's rich and has a false sense of entitlement. He wouldn't last a week broke and in debt with nothing but his personal labor to trade. He can't remotely understand a life like ours.
Trumps plans to save American lives by allowing the Governors to take the lead in each State has worked brilliantly.
The lowest estimate had 100.000 of us DEAD.
So now, after surviving because of him, you criticize his plan to bring us back economically in favor of those Governors who had thousands of people living on their streets in tents?

Foolish is as Foolish does.
I love the illusion in your delusion! The complete ineptness of Trump, including his early denials of reality don't exists in your world! No, in your mind, his complete failure to act aggressively, other than the racism triggered travel ban which ended up being a good idea, has somehow evolved into brilliant heroic action... OMG LMAO@U and smmfh
