Sorry to hear it, Miller.
And, thank you for sharing that OCD. Even if you barely knew him, it was still a nice thing to share his story so he doesn't fade completely anonymously.

Not as many as yesterday's 50, but 37 deaths today is still a sizable uptick from just a few days ago. I think this time last week we were at 12-16 per day.

One last update on my buddy:

He went HOME!
He was released from ICU on Sunday, I think, and was released and at home as of yesterday. No word on the final outcome of his kidneys; don't know if he still receives dialysis, but he's alive and well. Even walking on his own already.

We seemed to hover in that 15-25 range for awhile.

All the last 2 days have shown me is we're not opening up anytime soon, and won't be shocked if more measures come down if this uptick continues...

The number to watch is the new cases and new hospitalizations number. The deaths number will lag behind the curve of the others.

Once new cases and new hospitalizations begins to taper off, we're good to start opening things up. Deaths would then begin to taper off within 10-14 days of that.

Our # of new cases seems to have gone up considerably as well, which, you're right, is more concerning as far as how long this will last. Hard to tell when you generally only see that day and the previous for reference on the sites I go to.

Wow! The hospitalizations and ICU rate are going down quite a bit. It's not just due to deaths, either.

Can we assume the decrease of hospitalizations and ICU is due to recoveries?

The view is skewed by being only a 5 day graph. The bump yesterday makes today's normal number look like a major drop off. Definitely missing some scale.... but, yes, recoveries would account for that, though we really have not had a large number of recoveries, yet.

Total Cases: 7791
Deaths: 361
Total Active Cases: 7310

That means there have only been 120 recoveries total, thus far (source).

That is awesome news about your friend. His physical conditioning probably played and will continue to play a big part in his recovery.

Our daily hospital meetings have gone from COVID preparations to gearing up to go back to normal operations. Any overflow tents are now gone. Zero cases were admitted and a few employees tested positive and believe they are back. Many, many negative tests. Still over 1000 on furlough.

Not going to say it's the beginning of the end but to steal a quote from Winston Churchill, "Perhaps it's the end of the beginning ". All I do know is it's been a bit odd around the hospital. The panic has subsided tremendously...

Glad to hear about your friend PPE. I would have to imagine that they would not have sent him home if he was still compromised in any way.

OK, so why does a 16 year old kid ..... living at home with his parents, who may not even have a job ....... need $2000/month, indefinitely?

Why do couples making up to a quarter million dollars need more money?

This is really getting carries away.

If you or somebody you know is a non tax filer:

https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here

They just opened this today, where non filers can enter their information and get the stimulus funds direct deposited in days. Just trying to get this out there because they didn't announce it very well.

I wondered why 16 too, then thought they might be trying to cover emancipated kids? Because you are not qualified on the $1200 if somebody else claims you on their taxes but adults with child dependents get $500 per kid. And I think it was for adults 18 and over. Emancipated kids would have been out...?

Especially if they are still working. They need to target people out of work. I can do my job from home and haven't lost any hours in this. I don't need a check. If they send me a check, I'll be giving it away.

Hopefully not. Typically a judge won't grant emancipation unless the kid can show they are gainfully employed and able to support themselves.

Not the vast majority of 16 and 17 year olds, though.

Got some pretty shocking news that one of my best friends tested positive a few days ago. I hadnt talked to him in a while and he doesn’t live so close now ... but he called me. He’s got a severe case.

He said his lungs and breathing is the main thing. He’s in great shape, and he told me he can barely walk without near collapse.

He has no idea where he got it because he’s basically just been at home.

Out of the magic fund that pays for all the endless wars and over priced contracts. This government can print money for ANYTHING. So when they ask where the money is coming from for something like M4A healthcare, it has nothing to do with not being able to fund it, it's about protecting profits for their big donors.

Hate to interrupt the financial debate, but that sucks, bro.

Our stimulus check was direct deposited a couple of days ago. I don't understand why those on Social security would not have gotten them first or at least at the same time. I get some people are out of work and desperate but I don't know what good 1200-2400 +kids stipend is going to do beyond the next couple weeks.

As for the 2000 Temporary UBI, I don't think it will happen. If it does and you don't need it or are worried about the economy, then go spend it in restaurants, bars, small shops, the post office, and other places hurt the most to help jump start the economy. Or donate to the local food banks and charities helping so many people out.

Peen I think your attitude toward people is terrible. I think people should help themselves too, but I also understand that not everybody has the situation, education, job skills, job, to do it. Just the other day you were worried about your savings or investments being wiped out or taking a huge hit; you don't think things like that happen everyday to good hard working people? You can't save enough for some of the curve balls life throws you bro. I got crushed a couple times with medical expenses before they made insurance cover preexisting conditions, there was no planning for those heart attacks and I was fairly young and in good shape. I had to work my way through it and I did, but I made a lot more than most people then too. In 08 I went through a ton of savings and credit trying to keep my business afloat then just trying to live until I replaced the income... Hard to plan for that too. So maybe you should lighten up on people a little. I know you hate the way I think and my politics, but acting like everybody that's hurting is stupid and lazy is just plain wrong.

It's sad that this far along in the process there are still only enough testing supplies to "test the sickest". It gives us no way of knowing the extent of this outbreak.

I think that at this point they've accepted that it kinda doesn't matter. It would be akin to trying to do the same thing with the flu.... it buys you very little. It's out there, it is everywhere, it isn't going away, it is going to run its course through the population.

In the end, most people will have a mild case; those people don't really need to be tested. It's not like there's a treatment to give them. They take some aspirin and get some rest.

For the ones that get sick enough to go into the hospital, I think the tests at this point are mostly just to decide if they might actually have something else that we CAN treat... then, it decides which part of the hospital they go into.

At this point, I think the antibody tests are probably of far greater value, and a better place to put the money.

I think it matters a great deal if we plan to stop social distancing. Knowing the potential for how bad a second wave can become is critical to how safe it would be to relax social distancing and the consequences that may result.

Knowledge is power. In this case, the lack of knowledge could be a catastrophe.
