It's been happening a lot in Illinois too. Here, you need a Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) license to purchase and own a gun. This license costs $10 and can take months to receive, even outside of a pandemic. Seriously, mine took 50-something days after I submitted for my FOID a few years back.
As it turns out, tons of people that voted for all these restrictions in Illinois have been turned away at gun shops over the past month+. I've heard many stories of people pleading that they need a gun to protect themselves in times like this but they weren't aware they needed a FOID card, which again could be months, and there would be a 3-day waiting period on top of that too.
A lot of people are realizing the laws in this state are stupid.
I'm not saying guns should be available to purchase for anyone on the same day and that everyone should have one, but there are a lot of people worried about their families safety and they can't protect themselves. In most cases, the police aren't going to be there in time. Heck, there have been quite a few cities that have announced the police won't even bother showing up for some types of calls (I think Dallas and a few other cities have similar new policies):
CINCINNATI -- Starting March 24 at 8 a.m., Cincinnati Police will not respond in-person to calls for assaults without injuries, break-ins, criminal damaging and more.
Essentially, you're on your own for the time being and people are afraid to hear that (even though that was the reality before this too). I used to laugh off my dad when he'd warn me that the 2nd amendment would be repealed in the near future, I'm not so sure anymore. With the everything Virginia is trying to implement, it's essentially what they're doing. It's a sad day.
And then you have celebrities like Alyssa Milano preaching how Americans shouldn't be buying guns during the pandemic but yet she owns at least two guns for her own self defense. So, it's cool for her to protect herself, but nobody else should. Not to mention her attacking Brett Kavanaugh to kick off MeToo but is now willing to let due process shake out for Biden.
I'm cool if you're on either side of these issues, but at least stay on one side all the time. Hypocrites.

Right now I believe the ACLU is fighting against law enforcement using facial recognition software in order to identify suspects. Our department only used in a couple incidents (like a murder investigation to develop leads) and got our hand smacked for it.

I don't like tying the hands of law enforcement by limiting tools. Facial recognition software should absolutely be in your toolbox IMHO. As long as you are getting the right person and other evidence confirms that, almost any method/tool should be on the table.

My reaction? I think its reasonable to not be happy with the government infringing on peoples rights.
Also, the term gun nut is a made up term by liberals to insult people who like to own guns and enjoy shooting sports and hunting. They have created that term as negative connotation to try and group people who own guns as somehow dangerous to instill fear in others.

My admin often finds itself in over its head and therefor not likely to take and a hold a position. The software they were using was scanning photos via a 3rd party that were publicly available. ACLU was citing privacy issues and a rather high 'false positive' rate. I think it's probably best if reserved for more serious offenses (such as murders, agg assaults, etc) but it shouldn't be your only identifying evidence. As you said, there should be additional corroborating evidence as to why that's your suspect.

No they haven't. But there are cases that will be coming up before the SCOTUS that will determine whether that will happen or not.
They have however severely restricted abortion rights in many states that will force this to come in front of the SCOTUS. As as of now it's a work in progress.
