Oct 7 Lewis left the Browns game with an injured foot on Sunday. His return was questionable. Advice: Lewis ran just once, gaining 11 yards on the Browns' first offensive play. He was replaced by Jason Wright. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5034/news
Before the season started, even after the draft when we wre looking for dimonds in the dirt in undrafted Free Agents people were talking alot about what we will do without Jamal Lewis if we do not have another back.
After Jason Wrights performance today and over the past few weeks what do you guys think? I'm starting to like him more and more this season. When we first picked him up off the practice squad i loved him until he got stuffed because of our line continously getting negative yards. But now he has shown some potential with alot of good gains and runs.
I to be honest liked Harrison more than Wright, but now i think we can count on this guy to run behind our line we have now.
Any worries / concerns?
Heres his stats up to the NE Game....putting up 50+ yards against a NE Defense, being down earily hurt his carries though obviously. Just wonder what he could have done if it was a closer game or a win.

I'm fine with Wright personally.
Everytime he touches it I feel like he got shot out of a cannon. Plus he ran with some grit today breaking tackles and bouncing off defenders.

Hes a shifty back, hes pretty quick, doesn't have breakaway speed but he's 500x better than Droughns was last year, he doesn't really ever go down on first contact.

I agree. I like Wright a lot.
If J.Lewis's injury is serious, I think there is a better than good chance he might surprise us carrying the load.

I think our passing game was Wrights best friend today. Teams really have to respect it now.

If that happins, i wonder if Harrison will get some more looks also. Which i'm also hoping too see. But then again, Vickers could be used as a HB over Harrison couldn't he?

That's an interesting question.
If Lewis is out for any amount of time, I have to think Harrison will now be active.
The main back needs a blow every now and again, and I would assume Harrison would get some PT.
But they could opt to go with Vickers in those situations although I've seen nothing from him that would indicate he was anything other than a short yardage type of runner.

I am absolutely concerned about Wright having to take a big amount of carries.
You point out that he has a few big gains, but those are on one/two plays a game specifically designed to fool the defense and get big yardage. On his career, he's averaging 3.4 YPC (including those plays). Wright is one of those "brown and orange tinted glasses" kind of players. Since he's running for us and will have to eat carries, we look at him as a legitimate player who can run on teams. If we cut him, he might be a 3rd stringer at best.
We need another RB. Wright is good for a handful of change-of-pace carries, but he can't get it done as the feature back.
We're... we're good?

what about when he carried for 75 and 89 (numbers completely estimated but i remember in 2 starts he went over 70 and 80) in his two starts last season, without the benefit of a passing game. Both of those games were on about 25 carries, and one was v. the Ravens.
Jason Wright would be fine as a starter. Maybe not for a whole year, but definitely for a short period of time

Wright has never taken over 18 carries in a game in his entire career and his two high totals (on the ground) were 74 and the 59 he did today. Not sure where you're getting that info from.

I really like Jason Wright, he's a good kid, accelerates fast and pretty shifty plus he's very good at catching the ball, his 2 main weaknesses are, patience and pass blocking, but he has improved on those since last year. He's definately much better than Harrison who has done absolutely nothing but mess up when given his chance.

perhaps the 80 something was a 50 something.
Well ok, but the 18 for 74 game, was good. And wasnt it against a good D? I'm a fan of Jason. i guess my numbers were off. But I dont think he's a liability

i like the kid, (jim romes not burning) tells me all the time he likes Harrison better but i don't think hes better. I think wright played a great game when lewis got hurt today, defiantly a great backup if not a good starter.

I guess I'll be the first one to say it then... I really don't care for the guy...He's not fast, and his run style is just kinda all over the place... which kinda makes him get tackled b/c he has no real juke moves..

Little update on Lewis: (Will also put in the injury thread)
Jamal Lewis left Sunday's game with a right foot injury.
Lewis was taken to the locker room to have his foot x-rayed, but later returned and was running around and making cuts on the sideline. He never did return to the field. Jason Wright will start in Week 6 against the Dolphins if Lewis sits and, and Jerome Harrison would likely be active.
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=NFL&filter_teams=CLE To just fyi on his carries against which teams: He had 15 carries for 31 yards against baltimore, 9/24/06. With 18 carried for 74 yards against pitts, 11/19/06. No TD's in either game, or for all of 06.
For a short period of time I think he is good, 1 or two games. I would not want him as the featured back for a whole season though.
Next offseason we will upgrade the RB position. Assuming we don't resign JL, we get the best FA we can, and depending on how that goes depends on how early (if at all) we draft one. We may resign JL, but still draft one early. Too soon to tell, or to worry about, we have 11 more games to go out and win!
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

just clicking...
Anybody else think he should have got in that endzone on the first drive... I could have got in there... all he had to do was jump on Vickers back. I knew when he didn't get it that we'd get stuffed or turn it over.
But overall I thought Wright did fairly well filling in for Lewis.

JW is a 3rd NFL RB @ best. An ST guy who can play in a pinch if needed. A stop gap guy. He seems to have a balanced skill set. He's average to below @ best. Smart guy, good team mate and good human being from what I have read and heard.
All of the Browns back up RB's seem to be late round young guys with 3rd down type traits or specific abilities... Hum...
The Browns do need to upgrade the RB position in the off season. But D-Line, LB and safety need to come 1st... The Browns could use another quality WR too. JMO's.

I like Wright, he runs hard and seems capable of filling in adequately... I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in him as the long term answer though...

Jason Wright sucks, he couldn't even get it in from the 1 yard line, what a waste of a roster spot. /sarcasm off

Michael turner is a UFA next offseason. He'd be a great pick up, and I wouldn't be surprised if we go after him. However, after reading Peter Kings MMQB today (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/10/07/mmqb.week5/1.html); in his "Fine Fifteen" section he writes "6. San Diego (2-3). The bidding opens for free-agent-to-be Michael Turner at, what ... $7 million a year?". 7 mil a year, seems a bit high, however I think we could pull it off, and solidify our RB situation for a few years. I believe he is high on our list (or should be), as well as some D-Linemen.

If we want to take a major step next year, I think DL is more important than RB... and if we have big money (no pun intended) to throw, we need to throw it at the DL...

Yes Definately, who cares if a guy is asking for a lot just pay them to finally make our D-line hold their own at the Line of Scrimmage. So sick of seeing our D-line getting owned on every single play even by back-up players. Also our whole defense as a whole needs to focus mainly on tackling in the off-season and in camp next year. Tackling has been so horrible on this team since '99 and it needs to be a #1 priority starting NOW.
