It's Thanksgiving Day up here (happy T-Day to fellow Canadian dawgs ).

Brother-in-law had us over at noon for a turkey dinner, and he deep fried it (which I'd never tried before, but remembered DTers talking about deep fried turkey before and how 'once you go deep fried you never go back'... I even mentioned you guys today at dinner haha).

Anways, deep fried turkey smokes oven-turkey (although oven-cooked is great, too).

Who deep fries their turkey, and what difference do you notice?

I do one every year, in adiition to smoking one over an open flame spit, fired by well-seasoned fruitwood.

The key is not overcooking (boiling) in too hot an oil, and use peanut like they say.

We also inject many, many, many cloves of raw garlic into the turkey. It does as much for tender/juicy, as it does for flavor.

The Thanksgiving oven has gone the way of the AP poll, an old, hardcore standby, but not of much use anymore.

I also fry my turkey's... I usually do a couple a year. I'm probably doing one in a couple weeks for a get-together at my house. I'm definately frying up a bunch of wings for it. I've also fried ham and that is excellent fried as well...

i've been frying them for 2 years....

i usually make one for thanksgiving, and one for christmas....

the oil don't keep much longer than that...

if your gonna buy a fryer make sure the turkey is dry, and fill it with the right amount of oil

usuallly you put the turkey in the pot, and fill it with water to just cover it....take out the turkey and mark the spot for the oil...no problems...

the first time i did it i left the gizzard bag in the turkey by mistake.....water in oil=bad

best thing i like about it is the crispy skin...i just rub mine with salt and pepper....wanted to try the tabasco marinade, but i don't think my kids would like it....

That's what I thought, plus it seemed more tender.

Deep fry seals in the juice.

I cook it that way or smoke it about 9 hours....both work for me.

Yummy yummy yummy yummy!

Deep fried turkey is great. If you inject it with the right stuff, it's more flavorful and that deep frying locks in the juices, making it way too good.

Yeah brother in law had his pot set up on the lawn. I read the instructions... 3 1/2 minutes for very pound of turkey. He used peanut oil, too... the bird was delicious.

Peanut oil is the best for deep frying...it has the highest smoke temp of the common veg oils.

And as Hoop said.....outside is the only place to do this....well away from structures...and kids don't need to be anywhere is sight.

Hot burning oil isn't easy to put out and it can kill you.

I'd really like to try to deep fry a turkey but, with my history of burns in the kitchen I think smoking a turkey might be better for my next adventure.

True story.

Some guys I know decided to take a camping trip to some remote wooded area in Georgia for Thanksgiving.

Well when they got up on Thursday morning it was cold and rainy, so the smart one of the bunch decided they would deep fry the turkey inside the tent to stay out of the rain and cold. Man I was there were cameras rolling.

Needless to say, they spent the night driving back home after the tent and all their sleeping bags and stuff went up in flames after getting drenched in hot oil.

Why didn't the "smart ones" in that group talk him out of it, or beat him over the head with the turkey until he was unconscious?

According to them, neither of them had ever fried a turkey before and had no idea what it entailed, I'm not sure I'm buying that, but that's their story and they are sticking to it.

I guess I'm old school,, I still prefer to roast my turkey in the oven with all the veggys.. And the reason is pretty simple,, I love turkey gravy and it just isn't the same with a fried turkey,,, not that bottled stuff... no sir..

We usually have both at Thanksgiving.

Sometimes we even have a Honeybaked Ham too. But then we usually have 20-30 people for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

MY brother does it with a jalapeño butter injection / marinade.
That is the best turkey I have ever had. Make sure you find this and use it.

Over roasting isn't bad.

When I roast turkey in the oven, I put about 6-8 strips of bacon on the outside of the turkey.

Acts as a baster and gives the bird a semi smoked flavor.

Not bad at all.

As Emeril would say..."Pork fat rules!"

Since I will be venturing into this as a "restauranter" in the not too distant future, try injecting with apple juice..It does wonders with smoked baby back ribs....

Well she just roasts the bird. Nothing as delicous as that finds its way to her table. Can I send you the bill for the second turkey? I have to try that, and yes pork fat rules.

I do the apple concentrate too...inject it with one of those injectors.....gives the meat a nice flavor. I really hit the breast as that is the cut that tends to get dry.

Deep fried is good, but doesn't keep as well. Nothing beats Grandma's homemade turkey though. That thing keeps until you and the family have eaten leftovers and sandwhiches for a week.

Thanksgiving always ends up being traditional- roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. I guess tradition overrides everything there. But for summertime cookouts, my father-in-law or myself will do the deep fry. The only thing I don't like about the way he does it is he cuts it all up at once, puts a little water in the bottom of the pan, and lets it all marinade a bit longer. Problem is, I like the turkey nice and hot, and after sitting for a while and serving it, the turkey is no longer hot.

We used to start off our first tailgate of the season with a nice deep fried turkey in muni-lot. Not sure why no one got it set up for this year but it didn't happen.

The best part of deep frying the turkey pre-game... Post-game turkey fries. Just reheat the same oil and dump a couple bags of frozen fries in there. Delicious.

Never, ever fry a Turkey Indoors. When I do mine it's usually raining I just put it in the middle of my garage door and the roof ledge covers it so no water can get in and its well ventilated that way. I also rigged my Cherry Picker so I can drop the turkey in it real slowly and has worked perfectly for the past 5 years or so. But don't even attempt to fry a turkey inside in a closed area, the carbon monoxide alone could kill you not to mention if it flashes over you'll burn your house down too. Always keep a fire extingisher close by just in case, better to be prepared than un-prepared because you never know.

That is cutting it too close...if it boils over or is tipped, that garage is going up in smoke my friend.

You are better off doing it in the yard, several yards from a structure, under some sort of a tarp cover.
