WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump on Sunday tweeted approvingly of a video showing one of his supporters chanting "white power," a racist slogan associated with white supremacists. He later deleted the tweet and the White House said the president had not heard "the one statement" on the video.

The video appeared to have been taken at The Villages, a Florida retirement community, and showed dueling demonstrations between Trump supporters and opponents.

"Thank you to the great people of The Villages," Trump tweeted. Moments into the video clip he shared, a man driving a golf cart displaying pro-Trump signs and flags shouts 'white power." The video also shows anti-Trump protesters shouting "Nazi," "racist," and profanities at the Trump backers.

"There's no question'' that Trump should not have retweeted the video and "he should just take it down," Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., told CNN's "State of the Union." Scott is the only Black Republican in the Senate.

The president's decision to highlight a video featuring a racist slogan comes amid a national reckoning over race following the deaths of George Floyd and other Black Americans. Floyd, a Black Minneapolis man, died after a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes.

Protests against police brutality and bias in law enforcement have occurred across the country following Floyd's death and there has also been a push to remove Confederate monuments, an effort Trump has opposed.

Trump's tenure in office has appeared to have emboldened white supremacist and nationalist groups, some of whom have embraced his presidency. In 2017, Trump responded to clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white nationalists and counter-protesters by saying there were "very fine people on both sides."

Tim Scott condemns "terrible" video shared by Trump showing supporter yelling "white power"

Washington — South Carolina Senator Tim Scott denounced a since-removed video shared by President Trump on Twitter on Sunday morning in which a man can be heard yelling "white power," with Scott calling the clip "terrible" and "inappropriate."

"The truth of the matter is when you hear things like that racist chant towards white power, we should have the same response with the same type of energy that we have for those folks we know have been disadvantaged for so long," Scott, a Republican, said on "Face the Nation" when asked about Mr. Trump's tweet. "We should stand up and say that's not right. And I'm saying the exact same thing now.

Scott said he watched the full video shared by the president, and called it "terrible."

The video in question showed competing protesters yelling at one another in The Villages, a large retirement community in Florida. In the opening seconds of the video, a man driving a golf cart with a Trump 2020 sign and Trump flag is heard yelling "white power."

The president retweeted the video and wrote, "thank you to the great people of The Villages. The Radical Left Do Nothing Democrats will Fall in the Fall. Corrupt Joe is shot. See you soon!!"

Scott said the video is "inappropriate" and "should be taken down."

The tweet ultimately was deleted, and White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement Mr. Trump "did not hear the one statement made on the video."

"What he did see was tremendous enthusiasm from his many supporters," he said.

Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, also denounced Mr. Trump's tweet and said the president has demonstrated through his posts his views on white supremacist ideologies.

"This is really not about the president taking it down. This is about the judgment of the president in putting it up," she said on "Face the Nation." "It is about what the president believes. And it is time for this country to really face that."

The president's tweet comes against the backdrop of the nationwide conversation on policing and racial injustice that has exploded following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month. In addition to protests, the White House and Congress have crafted proposals aimed at reforming policing.

Scott, the only black GOP senator, spearheaded the legislative effort for Republicans in the Senate. His measure requires increased reporting of use of force by law enforcement, provides funding for police for body cameras and requires departments to maintain and disclose officer disciplinary records.

On Wednesday, the GOP-controlled Senate sought to move forward with Scott's proposal, but Democrats blocked the effort to begin debate on the legislation. A Democrat-led bill also focusing on police reforms passed the House on Thursday.

Scott said he believes the bill stalled in the Senate because of "presidential politics and choosing a vice president."

"We could do so much together for those folks in the streets today," he said, referencing the thousands of protesters. "We missed a golden opportunity."

I watched the original video this morning. I think it was deleted due to language. But, who were the aggressors in this case? Who was attacking whom? Who was throwing the F-bomb around at every single person who passed by?

I don't know the backdrop of the situation. Perhaps those people in golf carts were having a racist rally against blacks? If so, my opinion will change. But, from what I saw....the aggressors were the people who were protesting on the BLM side.

The outrage wasn't at f-bombs or how loud people were shouting. It was about the POTUS posting a video on his twitter account where his supporters are shouting "White Power". If you don't have a problem with that - that's up to you. I think it's an issue and portrays the USA to the whole world in a pathetic light. . . . I get that when talking about racism in this country, you are pivoting the conversation to Blacks helping themselves and being accountable, I don't think that angle is relevant to this issue of what the POTUS tweeted. just me.

Maybe we expect too much when thinking Trump should be accountable for what he posts on his twitter account? I don't think so.

I thought I was talking about who were the aggressors in the original video that contained all the F-bombs. Those were delivered by those so-called peaceful protestors.

Again, I don't know what caused the protest. So, if they were protesting against a White Superiority rally, I will retract everything I have said. All I know is what I saw and the protestors were the aggressors and the ugly ones.

I thought the thread was specifically about Trump. His Tweet. And how his tweet had someone shouting White Power.

Me - I don't think it matters (as it relates to this thread) what the protest was about and what the protesters shouted and if the protesters were 'aggressive'. I think it matters that the POTUS posted a video with that content of someone shouting White Power and I think that was the point of the thread. And the outrage I mentioned is about Trump posting a video of someone shouting a White Supremacist chant/term.... Just me. And I think it matters.

Over the years, I've taken a stand on many political/social issues. I'll continue to do so. But when someone shares information that turns out is credible, I've been known to soften my stance.

But these folks don't. They find it impossible to Rethink anything.

They ignore it like everything else from him boasting about being a sexual predator and grabbing girls vaginas - to his sleeping with porn stars (while his wife was with child?) - to enforcing laws to separate immigrant kids from parents and keeping them in cages .... whatever it is, they can ignore it.

Why is it OK to say or claim black power, but it's not OK to say or claim white power? Honest question folks why would one be OK for one but not the other?

Another fact is this. The saying "White Power" the the #1 rally cry of white supremacist groups. Context matters.

I am not saying anything about Black Lives Matter. I asked about people saying Black Power. I keep hearing that term more and more. As far as "context matters" why is it then that if somebody says White Power and they are not a white Supremacist, or use it in a way that does not put down folks of another color is it OK no not say White Power, when it is OK to say black power?

So repeating the mantra of white supremacists is fine if "you don't mean it that way"? Does that apply to the N word as well? Or the confederate battle flag? I mean it doesn't really matter how the vast majority of people see it, as long as you don't mean it that way?

All I know is that if the seniors in the Florida "villages" are starting to get nasty and fight with each other... that's not a good sign for Trump's re-election chances.

If you hear people saying "white power" all the time, you're around the wrong people too much and refused to address anything I said.

And some folks like standing in the middle and doing nothing.

I tend to "sit on the fence" because it's the logical place to try to build a gate.

People on the sides seem to prefer throwing things (typically just words, though all too often not) over the fence at anyone not on their side.

Yelling it is wrong, but there are plenty of bad things going on on your side of the fence, too.

If both sides clean up their acts, maybe more people would feel comfortable walking up to the fence and trying to build a gate.

Edit: or better yet, tear down the fence instead of tacitly condoning actions that build it up.

I also hear them saying "Black power" does that mean I am around the wrong people then as well?
