Not many cartoonists remain from the last golden era of newspaper comics, but one of the best — maybe the best — has returned: Gary Larson of "The Far Side" published new comics online Tuesday. Larson is also putting up selections of his old strips (all apparently free and with minimal ad presence) and of his sketches.

It’s the sort of thing every dork who was 14 in 1995 (disclosure: me) dreamt of seeing when Larson announced his retirement and vanished into the pre-internet ether, a J.D. Salinger of sentient bugs and cows.

Well that's the sort of riveting news that's actually important. Hyperbole much?

Agreed. Larson was hilarious. Often times, you'd have to actually use your brain to get the humor.

Pit's idea of humor is calling other people names, making up lies about them, and trashing their opinion. He's a funny guy.

I don't actually make up lies. And I only go after those who deserve it. Those who try to dictate to others how they should act and conduct themselves. You know, would be dictators.

You put yourself on that list but I'm glad you can see the humor in it.

Funny you said that. I have seen some stuff recently by Larson.

I am not much for comics, but Larson was the best. Hands down.

No, I type to send a message. Sometimes it falls on deaf ears and sometimes people resort to dumb responses. Not that it will change anything.

Perhaps the message you are sending is far, far different than what you think? No, no perhaps. It is.

There were 2 books, I remember and 3 comics, 1; just a collection of far sides, about 75 of em, and 1, a Beatle Bailey,

The only part of the Beatle Bailey I remember is the end line,
something was going on, then something else, then the part I remember,

Concerning a ranked officer and just a military man, ... and the final line was,
" if you have a problem, find it, fix it, and forget it, or fake your way through it"
" If you want an answer ask a private".


Far side comic A, One dog is in the car, big smile, pulling out of the driveway,
2nd dog is forlorn, downtrodden in the fence next door, no love.

First dog brags to the 2nd dog, "And after we go to the grocery and the store, I'm gonna go to the vet to get tutored!"

Caption, " Despite his efforts Jim had trouble hiding his enormous deer gut" ( a play on "beer gut" a more used term back then.

3 Bears are sitting around the campfire (IN a Cave, eating); bear one says

" Reg, tell us again what the human sounded like"

2nd bear says,
" Aww come on guys there's nothing in here "

And I remember these from 30 years ago.

My favorites, of course- were his music-themed joints.
They were so on-point, I swear he had a background in music, whether as a pro or a serious student.

"Welcome to Heaven- here's your harp. Welcome to Hell- here's your banjo."

And this one is my absolute favorite. It sums up my Wonder Years, without so much as one single word needed. I carefully clipped it from the newspaper and framed it. It hangs on the wall of my teaching studio, yellowed from age, but never fails to elicit a laugh from any serious student who happens to look upon it:

Honesty is tough for you to follow sometimes. This thread isn't "Actual important news" no matter what you and a few other screamers say to the contrary.

You don't have to be "Confucius" to figure out this isn't "Actual important news". Well maybe you think someone has to be, but not really.

I didn't know where to put a thought, after looking up, to make sure I was correct because I'm constantly correcting in my mind, every time I hear it wrong,
When someone says "take ( x ) serious" and know they should have said seriously, because I've never taken anything serious in my life, because it's the wrong usage of the word,... (dang, everybodys saying this now, top politicians, newscasters, talk show hosts,)

So I too may have been 14 in 1995, and I'm still 14 today. hahahahaha

Still worried about the thread title? If you don't get it, that some would find an importance in nostalgia and thus a lack of importance to all the spoon fed mularky the real news is recently, then just enjoy not getting it, the thread title is obviously what it is, it is what it is.
