I think you have a good point here. Locals in the middle east act with more restraint than protesters here. Cops here are probably in more danger from "civilians" than you were over there (not overall, just the "locals" you brought up.) How often did the locals gather in mobs and set your vehicles on fire over there? It is crazy. "Cops" here are treated more like foreign invaders than soldiers are in foreign countries. "Protesters" here are treated more like foreign guerillas than most people in foreign countries.
The difficulty with relationships is that it takes both sides. Protesters want good cops to call out bad cops. Cops want good protesters to call out bad protesters. Unfortunately, people don't want to get caught off guard by the "bad" on the other side, so that's where their eyes stay focused.
Methods need to change on both sides. Violence and destruction should be frowned upon regardless of who is doing it.
"No Justice, No Peace" isn't peaceful protest. Don't get me wrong, I get the sentiment, but those two ideas are inherently contradictory. You can't be calling for "no peace" and be peaceful. I'm somewhat surprised that chant hasn't been used as a basis for charges of inciting violence yet/more often.
I'm all for individual freedom, but there has to be responsibility that goes along with it. Freedom unhindered by responsibility is just another way to say anarchy.

A 53-year-old Navy veteran went viral over the weekend after footage emerged of him confronting federal officers in Portland, Ore.

Just to clarify a few things. CBP can operate anywhere that they are dispatched within the U.S. Certain activities are limited to within 100 miles of the border.
DHS security forces operate within a jurisdiction. In this case, if rioters don't mess with the federal installations, then security forces will leave them alone. People should be careful because they do not realize that they can land themselves in pretty hot water by attempting to get into a closed off federal facility. The same laws that prevent you from going where you want in the capital building or prevent you from going onto a military installation apply to this. A lot of these rioters are committing felonies but probably don't know any better.
These rioters have nothing to do with the movement to reduce police brutality. That movement is directed at local cops. It is hard to see the connection between that and the need to break into a federal courthouse
