I will add to this.
We cannot even agree on what is a "fact" these days...
Take the Portland thing as described above, one side is a love in, the other side says it is a riot...
AP and Reuters are the only trustworthy news sources today because they tend to tell us what happened with minimal commentary.

j/c:
I am not sure, but I think the extended protest in Portland has probably started to hurt the cause. The message needs to be broadcast, but the amount of time and controversy is probably rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. And most of those people are the ones who might actually help provide change.
Conversely, I think the messages the NBA is sending are pretty effective. They are peaceful, respectful, intelligent, and controlled messages. I know that a lot of people are totally against those messages, but they are the same folks who weren't ever going to be converted under any circumstances.
Everyone has different opinions on such things, but I still believe that winning w/intelligence, reason, and good behavior is the most effective way to bring about change.

Maybe I am just fatigued of everything covid and social justice and everything in the news in general, but the constant social justice commercials and the constant bringing it up by white broadcasters during NBA games has ruined the watching experience for me. I just want to watch sports.

I heard that ratings for all these sports pushing BLM have trash ratings and the polls were that people dont want politics in their sports.
I have no links as I heard it from someone else.

I get that. I really do. I feel the same way.
But, I do respect how they are doing this w/intelligence, reason, and integrity. They aren't looting, rioting, or condemning others.
We all have our opinions. Not saying I am right. Just sharing my own particular opinion. I will listen and react in a more positive manner to intelligent conversation than I will when people resort to violence and hate-filled messages.
The former gets me to think about the message and I want to help. The latter only gets me to fight back.
I have said this before...........you don't ask for help while pissing on a man's shoes. You don't ask for a hand and then spit in his face. You gain "true" allies through intelligent conversation where there is compromise and an appreciation of the circumstances from both parties.

I don't disagree with any of that.
But I don't want to listen to Jeff Van Gundy stumble through some social justice message because he feels like he has to.
I just want to watch sports.

for those of you blaming social media for everything, i completely disagree with you.
i think social media was inevitable. any "intelligent" species is gonna have to navigate global connectivity amongst its people at some point. thinking back on it now, it makes sense that social media exist.
and i for one am extremely thankful for it. how many police shootings or police brutality issues would've been swept under the rug and never heard about if it wasn't for people with smart phones and a platform to post it on?
just think about pre-social media. news that would've highlighted the reality of america would've stayed in the local news.
sure, there are certainly problems with social media. no argument there. but the benefits far outweigh the consequences. how many businesses have be started or SAVED due to the global connection? how many people have fell in love or met a bunch of people they otherwise wouldn't have?
because of social media, i got to meet guys like Columbus and Rocket. i got cool with guys like Port, PS, OCD, DC, Clem, Pit, GM and a bunch of others on social media, to the point we comment on each others post on FB.
sure, ANYBODY can point to the flip side of everything i said.
but honestly....i don't care. because i've seen the benefits of social media. i see the mass movements that can be created and sustained, good or bad, through connectivity. it is something that humans HAVE to properly manage if we want to continue to grow. thats just a fact.
also, its funny that people blame social media for all the problems without highlighting the fact that its mainly here in America where we see the problems. social media didnt do anything but highlight our culture for the world to see. cause it isn't that much of a problem in places like western europe and australia. at least not compared to the US.
so a lot of times, i think its a lot less to do with people hating social media because of its own unique problems, and more to do with the fact that people's BS can be called out now because of it. also, its making people question everything they believe in, or what they THOUGHT america was and what it stood for.
i love see old cranky people talk about "i dont recognize my country anymore."
yea, its because the blinders finally got taken off and people have woken up to the realities of their country.
i mean i love it when people go "we gotta go back to the 50's and 60's when times were good".
thanks to social media, the vast majority now understand that even THOSE times were trash, because it was good...for who?
certainly not people who looked like me. and thanks to social media, i can trash that BS rhetoric.
as i said, im extremely thankful for social media. for a plethora of reasons.
We need leadership to help guide us.

Social media has given us information overload which isn't always a good thing.
But in general, social media is just a sign of the times. Technology moves fast. 10 years from now social media will be old news. 30 years from now it will be archaic.
There is zero point in getting riled up about technology advancements. It's fast and stops for no one. You have to learn to live with it no matter how much you long for the old days.

again, social media didn't do anything but highlight the problems that were already here.
we we were already divided before social media. politicians and big media laughed at the people long before social media.

30 years from now social media will still be here.
it will be quite evolved, but it will still be social media.
but yes i agree. we are never gonna go backwards with the tech so thats why i said we need leadership.

Social media blow the problems all out of proportion.
Its why people roll their eyes at you and your kind.
Its why you and your kind look bad.
Its why you and your kind will never get ahead.
Civilized people dont invite savages to dine at their table.
People in Portland need to learn this.

Eve, that was a bit harsh.
Social media is here and isn't going away. I'm not disputing the things you say. But there is no wishing it away. Got to figure out how to separate the trash from real news. Not easy, I agree, but that's why we need leadership. I agree with Swish on that.

This is what creates the divide. This is the honest reason. No one can deny it. Swish sat there and slobered up to it

There is zero point in getting riled up about technology advancements. It's fast and stops for no one. You have to learn to live with it no matter how much you long for the old days. Here's how I look at it: technology flows like a river. Everyone gets in his or her canoe/kayak/party barge at some point on the river, and everyone gets off at some point downstream. I'll get off and hang with static tech when I get too old to care about keeping up. Until then, it's my responsibility to take in all that the current tech presents, and discern for myself what's right for me... kinda like I've been doing all along since I started Elementary School. This is a new face plastered onto nothing new at all. Adapt, adjust, adhere... then opt out when you're maxxed out. Every single thing available is not necessarily right/useful for every single one of us. I can feel myself starting to look for a take-out point downstream where I can get off, pitch my tent, fire up my pipe... and watch the rest of you float past my front door to places I'll be content to only imagine. It's just how life works.

So how does that change the fact that violence decreased in Portland after federal agents left the streets? It doesn't.

Not sure where to post this article - it's got some Coronavirus implications, but it's really more or a problem that the USA is facing.... I think this is a very real problem with far reaching repercussions and costs, both financial and on family health. https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/02/opinions/...ccio/index.htmlIt's a really interesting article that dives deep. Not really political in nature - for example when talking about the impact of CV-19 it simple states the USA had a 'rather flat footed response' which is not unfair and doesn't point blame anywhere specific.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Not surprising, some of us stated this at the start. I know from my travels to different countries, that good, fresh cooked food is readily available in many cafes and street side restaurants a fair prices. In comparison to the US where fast food is on every corner and grossly out weighs (no pun intended) the number of quality, inexpensive fresh cooked food restaurants.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

So how does that change the fact that violence decreased in Portland after federal agents left the streets? It doesn't. Ok. So I guess the "zero creditbility" thing is over and done with since you've chosen to steer it in another direction as you seen the police info.. How are you quantifying your violence has deceased claim, by the way? Because that's not what was said at all. What was said is the violence at the protest site the feds were in charge of controlling went up when they were brought in went down when they left. Either you don't care about context or you ignored it.

Yes, your two right wingers know more than the local news stations in Portland. Carry on with your nonsense. If only that were true. Most of the mainstream news journalists today are "Activists" who just happen to report the news in a slanted view. gone are the days of mostly unbiased fact reporting news. Say what you want about NGO, but he is showing you actual video footage of what these folks are doing. Its pretty clear what they are doing. Im not taking a side here. I am saying the news will never go back to factual reporting, Social Media has made activist journalists the only viable way for these companies to make money. Trump needs to quit worrying about the media and send in Department of Homeland Security forces with orders to do anything they see fit to apprehend these people and put a stop to this. What your seeing in Portland and other areas is the exact mission Department of Homeland Security was created to deal with. We have the resources to handle this problem, its time the damn politicians get out of these peoples way and let them do their Congressional Mandated job.

Video of a very few protestors and trying to portray them as being representative of thousands. I mean if you want to talk about an "activist".
Homeland Security was created because of 9/11. You sound like an activist.

It depends on what the weather is like on that particular day. In case you missed it, the weather conditions help dictate what color the sky is.
