Look at this 40, the Lincoln Project...

Lincoln Project founders have ties to Russia and tax troubles, docs reveal

By Ebony Bowden

July 21, 2020

WASHINGTON — The founders of the Lincoln Project, a headline-grabbing anti-Trump political action committee formed by GOP operatives who describe the president as a “crook” and “huckster,” have their own checkered dealings with Russia and the tax man, documents obtained by The Post reveal.

Since its inception last November — announced with a blistering New York Times op-ed — the brainchild of George Conway, Steve Schmidt, Rick Wilson and John Weaver has raked in more than $19.4 million, according to FEC filings, and has needled President Trump repeatedly with provocative TV ads.

But the group — which the National Review on Monday dubbed “The Grifter Project” and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) last week dismissed as a “cabal of political consultants all in it for the money” — don’t exactly practice what they preach.

Co-founder Weaver, a political consultant known for his work on John McCain’s and John Kasich’s presidential campaigns, registered as a Russian foreign agent for uranium conglomerate TENEX in a six-figure deal last year, filings with the Department of Justice show.

TENEX’s parent company is Rosatom, a Russian state-owned corporation that also owns Uranium One — the company that paid Bill Clinton $500,000 in speaking fees and millions to the Clinton Foundation after then-President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed off on the controversial merger in 2010.

Weaver backed out of the lobbying gig in May 2019 and called it “a mistake” in a tweet in which he denied having taken any money from TENEX.

Still, that hasn’t stopped him from ironically railing against Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani and his “rogue ties to Putin backed thugs in Ukraine & elsewhere.”

According to IRS filings exclusively obtained by The Post, the Republican operative — who has also repeatedly called Trump a “tax fraud” and a “tax crook” on Twitter — also has an outstanding $313,655 federal tax lien against his Austin, Texas, home.

This March, an Austin shopping mall also filed a lawsuit against the children’s clothing store that Weaver and his wife own, according to court documents obtained by The Post, just months after Weaver mocked the president’s own string of failed businesses.

Weaver’s fellow Lincoln Project founder Wilson also has an interesting financial past. According to IRS documents, the GOP strategist has an outstanding $389,420 federal tax lien against his Tallahassee, Florida, home, and his bank moved to foreclose on the property in 2016.

Wilson, a best-selling author with 1 million Twitter followers, has never disclosed the money woes publicly, allowing him to sneer online about Trump’s decision never to release his own taxes — at one point calling him “Brokeahontas,” despite the fact that American Express had taken Wilson to court for his own unpaid $25,729 credit card bill the year before, documents show.

Trump rips Lincoln Project 'loser types' over coronavirus attack ad

“It’s very clear that this isn’t about Trump and Republicans,” one GOP source told The Post. “It’s about making money to help pay off their massive personal debts.”

Voter records on the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s website also show veteran Republican strategist Schmidt, another Lincoln Project boss, hasn’t recently voted himself — with his home state listing him as an “inactive voter.”

An inactive voter is someone who has not voted in two general elections and has failed to respond to letters from the county clerk, according to Utah’s voter registration website.

Schmidt, a communications strategist who has worked with George W. Bush, McCain and Arnold Schwarzenegger, disputed this account, telling The Post he voted by mail in 2016 and 2018 and registered as an Independent in 2018.

The devastating National Review piece dismissed the outfit as “little more than the most brazen election-season grift in recent memory” and a “ragtag band of three otherwise unemployed strategists plus one lawyer.”

The group has also drawn the ire of Republican lawmakers such as Cornyn after it began spending money targeting vulnerable GOP members, including Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, who faces a tough re-election bid.

A spokesman for the Lincoln Project declined to comment. Conway, Wilson and Weaver did not immediately return calls for comment.

The Lincoln Project, named after Abraham Lincoln, has made a huge splash in the short time it has been in existence — a lot of that due to the fact that one of its creators, anti-Trump Republican George Conway, is married to White House adviser Kellyanne Conway.

Trump went off on the group in May, after it ran an attack ad faulting his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, referring to its members as “loser types.”

“Lincoln Project is a disgrace to Honest Abe,” Trump tweeted.

“I don’t know what Kellyanne did to her deranged loser of a husband, Moonface, but it must have been really bad,” the president continued.

“They’re all LOSERS, but Abe Lincoln, Republican, is all smiles!”

The Grifter Project

By Steve Stampley

July 20, 2020

The Lincoln Project is little more than the most brazen election-season grift in recent memory.

NRPLUS MEMBER ARTICLE The four founders of the Lincoln Project — Steve Schmidt, Rick Wilson, George Conway, and John Weaver — introduced their new venture to the world in a New York Times op-ed in which they described their aims as to prevent President Trump’s reelection by “persuading enough disaffected conservatives, Republicans and Republican-leaning independents in swing states” to vote against him and to take down as many Republican members of Congress as possible.

But the project is a scam — little more than the most brazen election-season grift in recent memory. And it is working. As the ragtag band of three otherwise unemployed strategists plus one lawyer hoped, the allure of Republican-on-Republican violence has proven irresistible to the MSNBC set. Per their most recent FEC filing, the group has raised $19.4 million since its inception this past November.

The gap between the group’s rhetoric and its actions is enormous. The Times op-ed declared that “national Republicans have done far worse than simply march along to Mr. Trump’s beat. Their defense of him is imbued with an ugliness, a meanness and a willingness to attack and slander those who have shed blood for our country, who have dedicated their lives and careers to its defense and its security, and whose job is to preserve the nation’s status as a beacon of hope.” And yet the group’s focus thus far has been on vulnerable Senate Republicans, notably the moderate Susan Collins and the mainstream Cory Gardner, who haven’t exhibited any such behavior. Neither has Joni Ernst, another target.

The Lincoln Project’s ads don’t attack these GOP senators for supporting profligate federal spending, contributing to explosive debt, or enabling feckless foreign policy, nor do they bash President Trump for his incoherent trade policy or his failure to tame an ascendant administrative state. Rather, they attack Republicans from the left, in terms that please the Lincoln Project’s predominantly progressive funders. Rarely, across dozens of ads, is a political principle recognizable to anyone as center-right to be found. Is the Lincoln Project aware of who Abraham Lincoln was?

That most spots sound instead like Democratic boilerplate — the type of partisan schlock a Democratic candidate might run against a GOP opponent in a D+5 district — may go some way to explaining where the Lincoln Project is coming from. One ad slams North Carolina senator Thom Tillis for proposed cuts to federal education funding and Obamacare while claiming he supports putting “kids in cages.” Another sandbags Colorado’s Cory Gardner for siding with Trump on health care and the environment. Yet another lectures Susan Collins that she works “for Maine, not Mitch McConnell.” In an ad assailing the Senate majority leader, the group dubs him “Rich Mitch” and smears him as someone who has used his office to accumulate wealth (ignoring that most of McConnell’s wealth comes from his wife, Elaine Chao, not from anything he did during his time as a senator).

NOW WATCH: 'Dr. Birx Urges All Americans to Wear Face Masks and Practice Social Distancing'

It’s one thing to object to candidates of (ostensibly) your own party on principled or even petty political grounds. It’s quite another to employ the ideas and vocabulary of those with whom you have fundamental philosophical disagreements. The Lincoln Project’s founders may have written, “Our many policy differences with national Democrats remain,” but they have yet to demonstrate one.

This makes sense when one examines the Lincoln Project’s FEC filings. To date, the group has spent nearly $100,000 for “fundraising consulting services” with the Katz Watson Group. That firm’s founder, Fran Katz Watson, is a lifelong Democratic operative who previously worked as the national finance director for the Democratic National Committee. The firm’s long list of left-wing clients includes the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Beto for Senate. In addition, the Lincoln Project has spent large sums contracting with Elrod Strategies, the firm run by Adrienne Elrod, former director of strategic communications for Hillary for America, and has paid Zachary Czajkowski handsomely for “political strategy.” Czajkowski’s resume includes work for Barack Obama, former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe, Hillary Clinton, and disgraced former California representative Katie Hill.

If a group of unemployed strategists were looking to shape a persuasive center-right critique of Trump and his allies, these are not the talents they’d turn to. If, on the other hand, the aim was to open up anti-Trump wallets on the left, they couldn’t pick a better team. The Lincoln Project’s communications director is Keith Edwards. He previously worked on communications for Mike Bloomberg’s run in the Democratic presidential primary and as a staffer for New York City Council speaker Corey Johnson, also a Democrat. Johnson is on record as trying to kick a Christian relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse, out of New York City, after its staff set up a field hospital in Central Park at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Never mind that these volunteers were risking their lives to help others; Johnson alleged that its presence was “painful” to “all New Yorkers who care deeply about the LGBTQ community.”

For a group that makes a big deal out of transparency and morality, the Lincoln Project’s financial records make interesting reading. Spending by super PACs is divided into disbursements, which cover operating expenses, and independent expenditures, which are used in support of (or opposition to) a candidate. To date, the group has steered roughly 50 percent of its total spending, including almost all of its independent expenditures, through just two firms: Summit Strategic Communications and TUSK Digital. Summit Strategic Communications is run by the Lincoln Project’s treasurer, Reed Galen. TUSK Digital is run by former Lincoln Project adviser Ron Steslow.

Through July 13, the Lincoln Project paid at least $5.6 million to Summit and TUSK as independent expenditures against Donald Trump and GOP senators and for Joe Biden and Montana governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat running for the Senate. Save for $72,000 paid to Getty Images, that is the entirety of the Lincoln Project’s independent expenditures. Since the money goes directly to Summit and TUSK, no one outside of those two firms knows the vendors they use to buy ads, create visuals, do direct mailings, etc. By contrast, other super PACs, including America First Action, which backs Trump, and Unite the Country, which backs Biden, pay their vendors directly, allowing donors and the public to see exactly where the money gets spent. Since disclosure of spending on subcontracted third parties is not required, it is impossible to say how much of this money was actually spent by Summit and TUSK and how much the Lincoln Project founders pocketed or paid out to other principals.

For example, per Open Secrets, the group recorded an independent expenditure against Arizona senator Martha McSally, with video production costs paid to Summit totaling over $14,000 — an exorbitant amount for a 90-second video made entirely from stock photos and news clips. Compare this to a seasoned political consultant (interviewed on background for this story) who ran a statewide race and hired a film crew to meet in a remote area to shoot for two days. The team created enough content for a short biographical video, two 30-second ads, two 15-second ads, and two six-second bumper clips for a total cost of $15,000. This calls into question how much Summit pocketed versus how much it actually paid its subcontractors.

The Lincoln Project has made limited national cable ad buys, airing their ads mainly in Washington, D.C., or on Morning Joe — neither market is exactly a Republican hotbed. Despite Joe Scarborough’s conservative track record as a member of Congress, the show he cohosts appeals to a heavily Democratic audience.

The Lincoln Project also spends heavily on social media. According to the Facebook Ads Library, the group spent $1.67 million on ads across Facebook and Instagram. However, many of those ads target donors with asks containing links to their donation page.
113

The group’s intentional lack of transparency, combined with the nearly $20 million it’s hauled in to date, raises valid questions about the potential for financial grift. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Project continues to raise funds from left-leaning partisans by advancing Democratic narratives in an effort to defeat centrist Republicans — an intellectually disingenuous gambit at best. Earlier this year, the group introduced the tagline, “Our mission is to defeat Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box in 2020.” Another line, often attributed to P. T. Barnum, might be more honest: “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

When it comes to The Lincoln Project and their relation to the GOP, I say this:

--------------

I full well know they're trying to siphon voters away from Trump. Their bigger goal is to try and siphon eventual Biden voters away to whatever candidate runs in 2024 in opposition to Biden.

They'll never get any donor money from me. My donor money will continue to go towards the Black Lives Matter organization as it has since 2018.

The polls now look exactly like they did in 2016.

Trump will win in November. The polls are purposely being manipulated as online polls are being flooded with fake responses, and the actual polls they are using are not taking a real world demographic of the population. For example, asking 500 college students who they are going to vote for does not making up a real demographic of a state or even county.

In the battleground states, Trump and Biden are within 2 points of one another, nationally Biden has lost about 10 points to Trump and the most recent polls show Trump and Biden within 3 points of each other nationally.

Biden has no enthusiasm, he lost both of the early Democratic Primaries to Sanders by a large magin even before COVID began, and Sanders was screwed out of the Democratic Nomination anyways just like they screwd him before and replaced him with Clinton.

the Sanders/far-left part of the democratic party is very cold on Biden, and most of that part of the Democratic party will simply choose not to vote because Biden represents the part of the Democratic party they want to do away with and replace with a more liberal Sanders type of personality.

So Trump will win simply because the Dems have no enthusiasm or energy for Biden, but Trumps supporters will come out in mass and vote for their guy.

Plus, they called me the other day asking who I was going to vote for, and I told them Biden LOL..no way im voting for Biden, Trump all the way, but the silent majority loves to troll people...

I had this off-the-wall thought the other day.

What if the Democrats really don't expect to win. Maybe, given the current state of campaigning in Covid, they are putting up a front, with eyes to the future of 2024?

Especially as if some believe, they think AOC has a shot in 2024, then they wouldn't want to win this year.

AOC has no chance of ever becoming President.

Also, the Republicans are pretty much prepping Nicky Haley to be the Republicans Presidential Candidate in 2024 and Haley would destroy AOC in a National election.

Quote:

"The decision does nothing to harm peace efforts. Rather, the President’s decision reflects the will of the American people and our right as a nation to choose the location of our embassy. There is no need to describe it further.

Instead, there is a larger point to make. The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation. We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world’s largest contribution to the United Nations. And we will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they so often do, to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.

America will put our embassy in Jerusalem. That is what the American people want us to do, and it is the right thing to do. No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that.

But this vote will make a difference on how Americans look at the UN and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the UN. And this vote will be remembered.

Thank you." - Nicky Haley Us Ambassador to the UN December 21st 2017\

You cna just feel the fire, the love for the US in her words. Folks will RALLY around Nicky Haley from all sides of the political spectrum.

Also, rumors are Condelezza Rice will ber her Vice Presidential pick, so the 1st time in history we will have a woman president and a woman vice president...and Rice and Haley are shap as tacks, they will eat AOC and whoever she chooses as a running mate alive in any kinda national debate.

Just my two cents ...

With one of the - if not the - most unpopular Presidents in history, I seriously doubt there is a game being played where the Dems expect to lose.

Despite what the Right might want to suggest AOC does not represent the Democratic party.

You've really gone hard on the koolaid today. We don't know what's going to happen in 2020 - forecasting and speculating on 2024??? No thanks.

As for how much Haley loves the USA? I'll pass. Maybe you think she's an honest politician and means everything she says? Maybe you thought when Trump pretended to smooch the American flag it was because he really loves America so much too ? IDK - but I'll pass on that too.

a politician who embarrassed us at multiple UN meetings and further embarrassed herself with the constant defending of trump and his rhetoric, and another politician who helped Bush defend one of the worst - if not the worst- foreign policy decision in US history in operation Iraqi Freedom.

they would get absolutely crushed in a general on the same ticket. and rightfully so.

Also, Back in late June on Trump's Birthday, his online fundraiser raised more money in a single day then any fundraiser in history (14 million)

All these donations were from common normal working Americans, not big billionaires and corporations...

Takes a lot of 20-50 dollar donations to get 14 million in a single day.

Joe Biden can't get any money from anyone except woke companies...normal Americans aren't giving him squat.

So it seems Trump has far more quiet supporters than the news wants you to realize.

When Trump wins big in Novemmber, I can't wait to see the excuses here of how him and his jacboots stole the election when in reality, law & order, Police, a good economy, and jobs is what resonates with the rank and file American.

Sadly I think we will see this in spades and Trump will be the band leader. No point worrying about it till it happens - but I think it has a good chance of happening.

I think there are two scenarios that might play out and they are polar opposites: 1. Trump shocks the world again - he's at his best when he has a person to attack and degrade, it could happen ... 2. Trump loses by the largest margin in US history and the result reflects the polling this time around. Even given this scenario I think Trump does not go quietly into the night.

“Unlike the African-American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community"

Uhh... did Joe Biden just say that Black people are all the same?

‘Impotus Americanus’ Trump Weighs Over 300 Pounds

In a mock nature documentary, a wildlife expert who sounds like Sir David Attenborough, describes the habitat and activity of the Impotus Americanus creature, notable for its “exotic plumage.” It is one of the heaviest leaders in the animal kingdom, and is famously known to be an orange, ruddy color not found in nature.

The narrator further describes Trump as:

“A ruddy orange color not found in nature.”
“Once an alpha predator, this elderly specimen now weighs somewhat over 300 pounds due to its diet of fast food.”
“In its youth, it pursued females with other predators like Molestus Epstein.”
“Now it focuses on exploiting its home territory, the United States.”
“A master of deception.”
“Most corrupt of its species.”
“Its tweeted cries of anger are meant to distract its prey from its failures as the leader of its pack.”
“Endangered this November due to its own incompetence and failure.”
Voters need to put Impotus Americanus out to the electorally defeated pasture 94 days from now on November 3, 2020.

Nah, He won't win. Once Biden actually has to debate on TV can't form a coherent sentence I don't think Trump has anything to worry about.

Even if Biden does win by some off chance, it is what it is. Not going to make up anything.

Republicans will hold on to enough Senate seats to stop anything he wants to do. I can live with that.

The Democrats support of the rioting and defunding of police killed their chances of Biden being elected.

81% of Black Americans Don't Want Less Police Presence Despite Protests—Some Want More Cops.

The Democratic Party and the news media is out of touch with the wants and needs of the average American.

Trump is by no means perfect, I think the guy is a complete buffoon but even as a buffon he is a better choice than Biden and most normal Americans for this reason won't vote for Joe.

Yet he leads by either close to double digits or double digits in every poll.

You have started to sound desperate.

If you were running a sane candidate you would have a point. But you're not so you don't.

Look, I'm not a big Biden fan. He certainly wouldn't have been my selection. But I'm tired of having a president who attacks everyone who disagrees with him. Who calls the press the enemy of the people. Who says crazy things like...

“The American dream,” he said, “is dead.”

“China, you go there now, roads, bridges, schools, you never saw anything like it,” he marveled. “I love China,” he went on. The U.S.A.? “We’re dying. We’re dying. ... We’ve got nothing.”

When he retweets on his Twitter account a guy saying “The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.”

I could fill up pages with this type of garbage he does on the regular. You have dug your own grave. It's too late to try and climb out of it now.

Yeah its to bad that the Black people were already told who to vote for by Barry and Clyburn .... lets hope for some "notable exceptions" to see just how much of a racist moron Biden is.

Trump tells people who they should vote for all the time and you never seem to have a problem with it.
