The Chief Wahoo logo was racist. The name "Indians" is not.
It's not accurate, but it's not offensive.
Agree. Given the teams history, the Chief Wahoo logo and the name Indians are indelibly linked. Can anyone say that they hear the words Cleveland Indians and the image of Chief Wahoo doesn't pop into their heads most of the time ?
For clarity, My 1st choice for the team name is The Cleveland Indians. They are now and have always been my team. But the writing is on the wall that the name may very well change. So I wanted a lighthearted thread to discuss about name possibilities. Not whether the name should change but whaat we should change it too if it does.

The name should change to the Cleveland Spiders. It’s the easy choice but also the best choice and the one with the most history.
Yes, it is the easiest but Ugh one of my least favorites. It will never be my least favorite suggestion since I saw a list that had The Lindors in the top 10. Lindors? Really?

I was perhaps the loudest dude on here on why we should remove Chief Wahoo logo and the Redskins' name. I found both terribly offensive.
However, I think people take things too far and that only leads to furthering the divide between races, social classes, and political ideologies.
It is my opinion that we all react responsibly. I get fighting against a name like "Redskins." I don't get fighting against a name like "Braves," or even "Indians."
So many people want to impose their will on everyone else. I grew up in a time when tolerance was important. We don't all have to agree, but tolerance is a good thing. I don't like how so many want to dictate how everyone else thinks.

Because not only is it a really crappy name, the team stunk on ice. In their last year of existence (1899), they won 20 games and lost 134. That's a winning pct of .130. They finished 84 games out of first place, FFS. And last, if that's not enough, its a freaking INSECT!.
I'll accept Blue Sox, Spiders or even Blues (though it should be more about Rock N' Roll - NOT Rockers though). White Caps is too close to White Hoods. I wouldn't use that, but it would come up.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
Spiders vs Indians.... WTF IS WRONG WITH FOLKS. iNDIANS... GOOD NAME DOES NOT OFFEND MORE THAN 3 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION. OK That is a guess not a fact filled quote. However the Indians dropped Chief Wahoo and that was not based on facts either so if one side thinks it's OK then my side has the same rights to think we are OK.
So let me ask you this. If the Indians decide the best thing to do is to change their name, how does that change anything? The roster would be the same. The rules of the game will be the same. Nothing would really be changing but the name.
How would that bother you and why would you really care?
Just to be clear, I don't care if they change it or not. I neither advocate it nor object to it.
I just find it funny that some of the very same people who feel a business has a right to conduct business as they see fit now seem to have a problem with it.

If your family changed their name to Dumbass How would that effect you??? Not at all, but I am sure you wouldn't like it. We do you and others think it should be OK for the Indians to change your name when it has no effect on you???? I mean why is it OK for you and others but not for me and others?
If a team changes their name, a team you support, nothing changes. They still represent the city, they are still trying to win a title and they're probably in the same color scheme. That's far from being called "Mr. Dumbass" in a doctor's waiting room. The Cleveland baseball team could be Indians, Blue Sox or Spiders and nothing else in your life would be impacted or changed, unless you refuse to wear their old gear and want to buy new stuff.
A person's last name follows them around every day in their job, at any business, at a doctors office, with friends and it's something your kids would have to deal with too.
I'm gonna need a better analogy.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
Guess what... your not getting a better analogy. You believe it's oK for you to tell me how I should FEEL, yet it's not OK for me to tell you how to feel.
If you have not noticed and I am sure you have not. I never once told those who feel offended by Clevelands name that they have no right to feel that way, yet you think it's OK to tells others how they should feel
If you can smash it with a Kleenex-wrapped finger, its an insect.
I had one come into the bathroom under the door while I was on the toity. This thing was about the size of a half-dollar. It just stood there saying "you want a piece of me?". I threw the hand towel on it and stomped it. I shook out the towel into the bath tub and snatched up the only slightly injured monster spider with a wad of TP and flushed his sorry ass into the great beyond. That's what you do with spiders that you can't smash flat with a Kleenex-wrapped finger.
I wasn't suggesting how you should feel. I was just looking for why you feel that way. And I certainly understand having an emotional attachment to a teams name.
I think the only real difference between us is a see professional sports teams for what they are. They're a business, not simply a sport. As such they are going to do what they wish. I've come to realize that they don't really care about me as a fan when making their decisions.
I guess that's why when they make such decisions I tend to shrug it off easier than some people do. That's why I bring up what's really going on when the Browns change their uniforms every five years now. It has nothing to do with needing new uniforms. It's just a marketing scheme to get fans to spend more money.
I think the biggest mistake fans make is thinking that the sports teams they follow really give a damn what they think for the most part.

When the Dodgers moved to LA. The Colts to Indy. Braves moves. Rams. Browns. Cardinals. Did they care much about the fans?
Ironically, I truly feel that Modell cared. He liked being liked and he liked Cleveland. But money screams. It doesn't just talk.
Cleveland is a small market team. I am glad they have teams. I am indifferent about the name Indians. When Europeans first landed in North America. They thought they landed in the far east. They called all the natives Indians. The name really has no meaning other than lumping all the natives into one.
Of course there were more than five hundred nations. They didn't call each other Indians.
So like you I don't much care about keeping or losing the name. I am happy Cleveland has MLB.
