This is great news.

Baker looked electric in that 5 second clip. Like the best QB in the league. His drop and play fake were gorgeous. On time and accurate. Super Bowl.

Damn I watched Hard Knocks with the Rams last night.

Talk about an eye opener. First episode but damn. If that is what practice looks like for all the teams?

I mean they test everyday. They are outside. And it does not look like football practice.

It looks like teams are way behind. No pre-season games. Very little to actually look at and evaluate players. Hardly any actual reps.

Teams like the Browns with new staffs putting in new schemes. They are way behind the 8 ball.

If Kevin Stefanski can get this team ready to play by the first game. My hat is off to him.

Rookies are going to be in the deep end of the pool. Guys like Jedrick Wills and Grant Delpit need pre-season games. They are expected to start. We also may start other rookies depending on how they come out of camp with injuries.

After seeing Hard Knocks. I got a dose of reality.
I do not expect the Browns to start well.

So much will be dependent upon the individual.

Coaches like KS do not have the time and conditions to prepare a team. This will be learn as you go. Far from a well oiled machine. Far from the normal reps that teams go through to be ready.

Sadly, a solid post IMO. Put an asterisk on this year's SB trophy if we can get there. What you saw, what you describe, and what I feel will happen is a lower bar for competition quality this year with edges for hyper-talented players and also or clubs who have most of their Game in place. For first half anyhow. Think it may well feel and look like Strike Ball with less wrinkles and complexity into schemes and looks. We should "grow into it" later. And we will have some success with guys sitting out or tested into holdouts. Whoever masters the "patch and play" with their depth will then have a real edge, albeit not a great one, for the home stretch. At least that is one way I believe it might go. superconfused

With no scrimmages and no pre-season games and a bunch walk through practices.

Teams like the Browns will have a long learning curve.
Games become where you learn.

The Ravens and Steelers know their schemes. They know the language. They are building on to what they have already played under.

Individual talent does not compensate for unit awareness.

I have no idea how we will look.

If WE hoist a Lombardi Trophy, the asterisk means, "COVID and lack of training camp be damned, they still did it."

I have the episode recorded. It sounds like it will be much as I expected and that's why I said that I plan to give Stefanski a pass for this year. All I'm looking for is progress as the season goes on.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

j/c there is an excellent article in the Athletic for those that have a subscription (it's my first year subscribing and they have some good articles I've enjoyed reading across all sports) - "Who are these guys? Meet the Cleveland Browns defense headed to training camp". Nothing we dont already know or have discussed, but the roll call for the LB core is more than a little scary.

I'm watching training camp live.

All kidding aside, Baker is in phenomenal shape. He actually looks skinny which is hard to pull off with his frame.

Good news that. Hope it is able to be wrinkled up some. I still like the idea of some Chubb / Hunt backfield, especially for just coming into the red zone.

Browns owners confident Baker Mayfield, Myles Garrett will rebound, OBJ feels more comfortable in Cleveland

By Nate Ulrich
Posted Aug 16, 2020 at 3:27 PM

Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam admitted they learned a lesson last season: Don't get caught up in the hype.

The Browns had huge expectations in 2019 because they loaded up on talent, but

the team flopped and underwent another regime change after going 6-10.

"I think we probably all of us, including ownership, learned a lesson last year about tempering expectations, and I don't think we managed that as well as we should have," Jimmy Haslam said Sunday during a Zoom video conference after the second full-squad practice of training camp. "I think you've got to be realistic. This team hasn't been the playoffs since [2002].

"We're in a tough division. Baltimore and Pittsburgh are arguably two of the best teams and best franchises. So I think you have to be realistic there. We're still a young team. On the other hand, we feel really good about [General Manager] Andrew [Berry] and [first-year head coach] Kevin [Stefanski], our coaching staff, our personnel group and the talent that we've been able to assemble. So we're excited going into the year but realistic."

The Browns will have a good chance to live up to their potential if their headliners play like the stars they're often advertised as.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, defensive end Myles Garrett and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. are at the top of the list. Jimmy Haslam expressed confidence Mayfield and Garrett will bounce back from disappointing 2019 seasons, and Dee Haslam believes Beckham is more at ease in Cleveland a year removed from the New York Giants trading him to the Browns.

Mayfield showed great promise as a rookie No. 1 overall draft pick in 2018 but regressed last season.

"He came back in great shape," Jimmy Haslam said. "I think he's taken a really good leadership role, and we appreciated what he said [recently] about owning up to, hey, last year he wasn't himself. But I think he's going put that behind him.

"He had a really good practice today. We're really excited to see what he can do both in terms of being the quarterback but also being one of the leaders of the team."

Garrett's 2019 season ended when the NFL suspended him for the final six games because he hit Mason Rudolph over the head with the Steelers quarterback's helmet on Nov. 14. The 2017 No. 1 overall pick had 10 sacks through 10 games, but no one knows for certain how he'll play in the aftermath of the controversy.

Still, the Browns signed Garrett a month ago to five-year contract extension worth $125 million in new money, securing him for the next seven seasons.

"We spent a lot of time talking about Myles and his situation, a lot of time. That's a huge contract," Jimmy Haslam said. "But I think most of y'all know Myles, and Myles did something that was unbelievably out of character, unfortunately.

"He paid for it dearly, and we paid for it dearly, but we know him and his family well. We know the kind of person, the kind of man he is. At the same time, we know the kind of player [he is]. So we spent a lot of time thinking about it. But we're excited that he's going to be a Cleveland Brown for a long, long time."

Garrett has sat out the first two practice of training camp with a hamstring injury.

"I think he'll be back on the field in a few days, and it'll be good to have [No.] 95 out there because he makes a hell of a difference when he's out there," Jimmy Haslam said.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Beckham has said being traded from the Giants provided a shock to the system last year, and his first season with the Browns didn't meet his expectations. He had 74 catches for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games, but he never consistently got on the same page as Mayfield. He also played the entire season hurt and had surgery Jan. 21 to repair a core muscle injury.

Dee Haslam shared what Beckham told her in their recent exchange of text messages.

"I just feel like he's just so much more comfortable here, and he said that," Dee Haslam said. "He says, 'I'm in my home. I'm more comfortable.' I think it was a transition, but I think he's doing really well and love the fact that he's talking about how happy he is to be here and how comfortable he is. I think it's a great improvement. So we're really excited that he feels that way."

Jimmy Haslam added Beckham is healthy now.

"I think that's made a big difference, too," Dee Haslam said. "He's healthy this year, and he feels confident."

I watch some of practice today. It cut in and out so I didn't watch very long, maybe 15 minutes, but Baker did look to be in much better shape. Looked more like he did year 1.

That was my test. He just looked a bit pudgy last year. He lived and learned. It's a 11 month a year job. Take a few weeks off right after the season to heal up, then maybe a couple in June to go in to camp fresh.

Baker does look more trim and less pudgy, which is a good sign thus far

News & Notes: Joel Bitonio says Jedrick Wills 'looks smooth' in transition to left tackle
Aug 16, 2020 at 03:54 PM
poisal
Anthony Poisal
Digital Media Contributor

Joel Bitonio knows the last few months have been anything but easy for Jedrick Wills Jr.

Wills, the Browns' first-round draft pick, is in the process of making the often tricky switch from right tackle to left tackle. He's been learning on the fly since the Browns were allowed back into team facilities since the beginning of August, and he'll continue to receive a heavy load of reps each day of practice.

Bitonio, who underwent a brief switch to left tackle in 2018, understands the challenges Wills will face, especially without any preseason games.

"It's tough," Bitonio said. "There's a learning curve, but luckily we have a bunch of practices here. We still have a month before the first game, but it's not a lot of time. We're working against the clock."

Bitonio, however, said the Browns' offensive line is doing all it can to get Wills up to speed. Bitonio said Wills already has a firm grasp on the new wide-zone blocking schemes coach Kevin Stefanski has incorporated into the offense, and he was complimentary to offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who has 40 years of experience in coaching and making the most of offensive linemen.

"He's a football guy, that's for sure," Bitonio said. "He's very detailed and organized, and he knows what he wants out of his O-line. He's been around it all, and that's one of the best things about him. He's seen every situation in the NFL and he's coached future Hall of Famers. He's seen what they do well and what we can do well."
