The treatment of Native Americans is probably the single issue that upsets me about the history of our country more than any other so I won't delve into that topic in this thread. But let's just say changing the name from Indians certainly wouldn't upset me.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

My college degree was in Anthropology. I studied pre-history in the US. I was fascinated by Native American culture.

How diverse they were. How they differed linguistically and culturally.

Then I lived in the West; New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada. Came in direct contact with many Native Americans.

What was done to these people is hard to witness much less to accept.

It is a dark part of history that for the most part is glossed over.

Look, I respect you, but nobody is requiring you to roll over and play dead (whatever that has to do with having a team name change). And you would still get to support Cleveland.

I don't even care if it's 3%, 33% or 93% of the public. If the ownership group thinks they can avoid some bad press, sell more merchandise and move this team away from Native American imagery, then I'd support their decision. After all, we all know what it's like to lose a team, a team name is far, far away from something like that.

Times change and I'm worrying more about the country, our health, our economy, equality and the future of our kids than some dumb team name that isn't what I grew up rooting for, I grew up supporting the sports teams in Cleveland, not the "Indians", "Browns" or "Cavaliers". They're just names. The memories are still there, we can still wear the old merch and the team is still playing for the city.

I'm not trying to tell you how to feel, I'm telling you how I feel and I don't understand the rage behind it. My own dad said he'd never follow the team again, thing is, he doesn't follow them now. Heck, he's probably watched 15 games in the past 10 years. He's more upset about the principle than it's effect on the team (not suggesting you're that way).

Browns fans fought like hell to keep the Browns name when Modell moved the team. If it was "just a name", there would not have been that aspect to the fight.

I am an Indians fan. Will I still support the team if/when they change the name? Probably .... but who knows. Frankly, to me, every suggested name I have heard sucks.

If the league let modell take the Browns name, colors and history to Baltimore but still gave us a new team in 1999, we would have adapted and moved on. Sure, it wouldn't be the same, but we'd have football back and all new merch to buy.

For me, and may only be me, I was more interested in having a team back than having my "Browns" back. As it worked out, we got both but were still screwed on the deal, which we don't have to get into, but it did work out. However, again, if we had the Cleveland Steamers NFL team since 1999, I think 99% of our fans would have remained and supported the new team name and colors. That's my point.

The NFL has nothing, or at least little to do with the Browns name staying behind. Team owners have kept names everywhere by here. Art is the one who decided to leave the Browns behind. Not the league.

Had we not kept the Browns name and become the "Steamers", just speaking for me, I wouldn't have Browns season tickets today. I would be using my Gator season tickets much more frequently rather than selling them to my good friend who can use them for business purposes.

I would possibly be a Falcons or Titans season ticket holder. A much shorter drive. I'd just spend Sunday night in a hotel after the game in Nashville or Atlanta rather than Friday, Saturday, Sunday and sometime Monday in a hotel.

I usually drive through on Mondays, but sometimes I don't want to get on the road at 5AM to get home by 3PM so I just spend a extra night somewhere in Kentucky and get home on Tuesday.
I wake up at 4AM intending to leave, lay there a few minutes, say screw it and don't leave until 10 or so.

What's another $150 after you have already spent near $1000 on lodging, gas, and meals the previous 3 days?

I sort of understand a fan base being ties to the name Browns. It was a tribute to the man who founded the team. That makes more sense to me. The Indians however, I just don't get that type of connection.

I have been a Indians fan for more years than most of the folks posting here have been alive. I have been a Indians fan longer than I have been married. Speaking for myself only I don't want slapped in the face AGAIN just because SOMEBODY was offended by Chief Wahoo, and by a simple word that is spoken 100,000's of thousands of times by americans every day Indians.

I like. “The Cavemen”. Pretty sure no cavemen will get upset. Plus we could still use the nickname..”The Tribe”

LOL. The answer for me is dependent on if I am broke when I wake up. If so, just roll over for awhile. Figure that I worked hard together to that point. Sounds great to me.

When I was high school Mudcat Grant was a Cleveland pitcher. I always though what a cool nickname.

Well how about:

Because they have always been the Indians in my lifetime.. I suppose we will need to topple the statue of Bob Feller outside the stadium. Remove all busts from the HOF

I always do me. I just see it that if we eliminate the name Indians in Cleveland, we need to eliminate it from everything. We can't have Cleveland Indians in the HOF or on a statue outside the stadium.

Indian Motorcycles needs to change their name. Indiana needs to change it's states name. Indianapolis needs to come up with something else. We could come up with a lot of examples.

I don't think any of it is a "need". I think people just have different ideas of what they think doing the right thing means. They have different ideas of what doing the right thing is.

I don't believe the Cleveland Indians changing their name will create a larger fan base. I don't think it will improve or worsen the teams performance. I don't see the type of pressure being applied to the Cleveland Indians that has been applied to the Washington Redskins.

It just seems to me that the Indians feel changing the name may be the right thing to do as far as they're concerned.

For some I agree. At the same time I think a lot of people are easily manipulated to the extent that even though the facts wouldn't suggest actual outrage, it still exists.

I think bending over for liberal outrage is the way to go. Look how well it works in Chicago Seattle, and Portland.

Seems it is impossible to be enraged without a press conference so you can carry on for a huge audience and really "put on the agony" as my mom was fond of saying. Exaggerated hyperbolic rage just for points.

My suggested solution is simplistic. Outlaw cameras and platform sources. Easy peasy. Just getting rid of the political noise would be a blessing. All bullies require an audience. Not much rage can be sustained in a vacuum.

More whining goes on in this thread than in a pre school.

So much for those who promote businesses have a right to run it the way they choose. Of course this isn't about baking a gay couple a cake so....

Today is a difficult but exciting day in the history of Squaw Valley. After extensive historical research, consultation w/ Native American groups & outreach to our community, we have decided it is time to drop the derogatory term “squaw” from our name: https://squawalpine.com/squaw-valley-name-change
