https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jagua...n-jacksonville/ Folks, a young all pro rusher is available- don't know the cost. We know a LT is in our future, but besides protecting our QB what's more important than moving the oppositions QB. I vote at least explore the cost....bundle several picks and player/money...a proven commodity vs "potential", maybe a TE...I'd make the deal.....GO Browns!!!!

He’s certainly a beast, though I’m sure the price tag will be enormous
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Only way of looking at it, I think, is to grade him vs what we have, versus what is in the draft.
There is no way we give up a 1st for him. At best, I'd offer a 2nd.... so, what grades do we have on guys that are likely to be available with whatever pick we'd burn on him?
My guess: we sit tight. I doubt we view him as being supremely better than Vernon, so there isn't much of an upgrade, if any, to be had... and we'd be giving up picks AND having to sign him to a longer-term deal? Nah, it ain't worth it.

Just sign Clowney for the same money and don't give up a pick.

I would not do either. I would keep Vernon and invest my resources in another area.

I don't really know who the guy is....I follow the Browns, and the Falcons and Titans to a degree because I get them on TV every week. I am not sold on Vernon....he is a good player, he just seems to be nearing the end of the road. Injuries collect a toll some players have to pay. What other areas are you talking about? Honest question. At least we are looking towards the D. Our D sucked. It has for 25 years.

But, he would cost us too much if we traded for him. Clowney is a bit overrated in my opinion. Great physical skills who dominates at times, but is very inconsistent and can get man-handled. He also is asking for huge dollars. That's why I would just keep Vernon. I do think his injury history is a concern. Can't deny that. But, he is a very good player who can draw attention as a rusher and help to free-up Myles and he is very good against the run. Sets the edge well. Had a very high PFF grade this past season. When I said address other areas, I was speaking generically. I just think Ngakoue and Clowney would be too expensive and while Vernon's salary is high, we would not have to give up high draft picks and pay the salary that both of those two guys want.

I agree with the premise but would add that Clowney might also take that big fat paycheck and go into hibernation.

Not an expert at anything but flying fighter jets, I thought he was young and productive....and AVAILABLE. Vernon should only be counted on situational basis. We just signed a new guy from Atlanta so this post is OBE. Go Browns!!!!

I doubt the Jags would go for it...But I would definitely consider packaging Vernon with a draft pick...We can use the money that currently pays Vernon to pay Ngakoue (and possibly a little more...but it would be worth it). Atlanta gets a quality DE that can hold fort until they get a draft pick ready plus a pick.
It might hinge on a renegotiation of Vernon's contract...But I think an Ngakoue/Garrett combination would be nightmarish.
Part of the reason he is available is the souring of the relationship between the Jags and Ngakoue...It isnt necessarily about money as they are prepared to pay the franchise tag. So I don't really think the Jags are just "ok" with losing his productivity. Vernon could help alleviate some of that sting.
It is a thought. And I wouldn't expect anything to come of it. But that is a scenario I could handle. Even if we had a short term hit to pay some of Vernon's contract. I still think it could be worth it.
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

I like the Vernon of 4 years ago. Not sure if I like the Vernon moving forward, but hey, it doesn't mean he doesn't have gas in the tank. Big Daddy and Lyle were useful when we had them. I guess we will just have to wait and see if Vernon flames out or we get that last surge from a good player on his way out..

Man, sounds like another Jalen Ramsey.

I read that on ESPN a little while ago. I would not be surprised if he ends up in Seattle.

Just curious, why Seattle?
It's a tough year to be demanding a trade when we may not have a season, or a normal season.
The Jags want a 1st +. I doubt anybody gives that. That is a high price to give for a guy who is 25 and might not play for you until he is 27.

Don't see this guy coming here. I don't think this falls in line with the thought out plan of the DE position. Garrett gets an extension, Vernon's contract expires, we draft Vernon's replacement this year or next, and we get a comp pick for Vernon.
Remember, we already have money tied up with Sheldon Richardson (good value) and Big Larry Ogunjobi is coming due as well

Last year they traded away Frank Clark and signed Clowney to replace him. Clowney is gone as is Ziggy Ansah. LJ Collier or Branden Jackson I'd guess is the projected starter - and they have 3.5 career sacks between them. They had 28 sacks last year, tied for 2nd lowest in the league. A pass rusher is a big need for Seattle opposite Irvin. They reportedly offered Clowney 18.5m/year. Ngakoue is at 17.8 this year...but would expect more in a long term deal. Ngakoue's sack total is better than Clowney the last 4 years, but Clowney's tackles are higher. Knowing the money that's involved and the twitter crap yesterday, they might cut their losses and take less than a 1st +.

The Raiders have 8 million in cap space, plus rookies to sign. They can't afford him unless they cut or trade players. Cut Carr maybe since he has a 25m cap hit (8m dead cap)? This'll be interesting.

Could be a possibility if Tags drops to them at 12. They then trade 19 for Ngakoue.

With the uncertainty of the college season I’d be trying to offload picks quick.

He is young enough and productive enough that I'd absolutely trade for him for a 2nd and pay him what he needs. Especially since it looks like the 2021 Draft will be based on 2019 play... those picks are going to be a lot riskier than normal.

Doesn't he have to sign the franchise tag before they can work out a trade?

I think he has been adamant about not signing that franchise tag. I'm not so sure the reports of him being traded are all that accurate at this particular point in time.

j/c...
Wouldn't any team trading a high-profile player for picks insist on a 2022 draft pick? And then on it being higher because of the time lapse?
There will be some gems in the 2021 draft, but it will be more of a crap-shoot to find them. I think draft picks outside the first round will be seriously diluted in their normal value.

He’s be worth trading for for just one year. Especially with defensive players going down left and right. Get him for a year then figure out the rest in the off season.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
