He is out for the year but a nice move by the front office. Kid has some talent.

Player Bio
The Broncos pulled Weaver out of the Long Beach area and have been happy with his play since he arrived on campus. After redshirting his first season, Weaver was named a 2017 Freshman All-American after ranking sixth in the FBS with 11 sacks (33 total tackles, 13 for loss, one interception). He earned his second straight first-team All-Mountain West honor in 2018 after leading Boise State with 15 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks among his 43 total tackles in 13 starts. Word spread about his talent during 2019, and the accolades piled up: second-team Associated Press All-American, first-team All-Mountain West, MWC Defensive Player of the Year, Ted Hendricks Award finalist. Weaver led Boise State and finished among the national leaders with 18.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks (52 total tackles, one interception, three pass breakups).

Analysis
By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Overview
Stand-up end whose production as a pass rusher must be balanced out by his below-average ability and athleticism in stopping the run. Weaver is a naturally instinctive counter-rusher who uses synchronized hands/feet to attack both inside and outside edges as a rusher, but his lack of explosiveness and athletic traits could dull his rush production against NFL offensive tackles. He plays with football intelligence, but his level of NFL success could be determined by whether his skill can overcome below-average explosiveness.
Strengths
Excellent sack and tackle-for-loss production over three years
Quick lateral reaction to cross-face blocker
Fairly fluid in his movements with functional agility
Plays with hands and feet working in unison
Slick and seamless at working around blocks
Plays past blockers with his eyes
Accelerates into rush arc, creating rush momentum
Uses swipe-and-slide technique to trim the edge
Instinctive with his rush counters
Displays adequate football IQ
Can be a heavy striker as tackler
Weaknesses
Below-average body type with soft frame
Lacks functional pursuit speed as edge defender
Below-average athlete to drop and cover in space
Has issues with balance and body control at times
Ineffective punching and separating to set strong edge
Allows himself to be sealed by play-side run blocks
Too much head-ducking when taking on blocks
Lacks hustle from back side of plays

Some of those weaknesses are a matter of wanting to improve on them. Still produced in spite of the shortcomings.

I also believe that his worst college day will be about every game in the NFL. Welcome aboard, Mister Weaver. Win us some games. Sweat your work!

We got burnt by Jacksonville a few years ago on a similar deal - except we lost the player.

Dumb move by Miami to try and sneak by a 5th Rd draft pick - and by us back when we did the same thing. Especially given that rosters will stay at 90 until the final - and only - cutdown where he will safely slide to our IR.

Does Miami have 90 other guys more solid than this 5th Rd pick?

A free 5th Rd pass-rusher chance. Willie likey.

Edited to add:

I just read on another site that under the 2020 rules, Miami could have placed him directly on IR without the waived designation...makes it even more curious.

Somewhere down the road I am sure the media will interview someone about this pick up. I am guessing that we must have liked him a little during the draft but things just didnt work out until now. I hope his foot gets better and he becomes a steal.

That was helpful. Pain can spread around well from there.

Slap him on the forehead and yes. "Be healed!"

If only it was that easy. Get better and suit up. Welcome aboard.

I remember that. It was during the Mangini years, I think, and the guy we lost was a fringe in-the-box safety. We tried to sneak him through, but Jacksonville pounced. It was framed at the time that there was some sort of unspoken "gentleman's agreement" that teams could do this with certain players and other teams would leave them alone, but it looks like that is going by the wayside. Fine by me, IMO.

It was corner Don Carey. He ended up playing nine years in the league.

So I have to ask...why did they not just designate him to IR like we did to Delpit? What is the advantage to putting him on waivers first???

I am assuming we did not put Delpit on waivers in order to put him on the IR...for he would have been snapped up in a heartbeat...

IIRC, If you put a player on IR in the preseason, he counts against your 90 man roster. (and thus cannot be replaced 1 for 1) If he goes on IR in the preseason, he also cannot be activated off IR after week 8, he is done for the year.

As far as Weaver is concerned, I guess he's worth a shot .... however, he has no elite type traits. He is a long shot, IMHO.

Pretty much a free long shot however.

Almost no risk with an outside chance of a high reward. Good move by the FO. We will see how good starting next season.
