Cuts are coming Saturday...here's a prediction:
QB: Mayfield, Keenum, Gilbert (3)
RB: Chubb, Hunt, D Johnson FB - Janovich (4)
TE: Hooper, Njoku, Bryant, Carlson (he beat P Brown because he is a better receiver (4)
WR: Landry, Beckham, Higgins, Hodge, Peoples-Jones, Natson (6)
OL: Wills, Bitonio, Tretter, Teller, Conklin, Harris, Lamm, Hubbard, TBD (9)
ST: Seibert, Gillan, Hughlett (3)
(29) for O & ST
-----------------------------------------
DL: Garrett, Richardson, Oggy, Vernon, Clayborn, C Thomas, Elliot, Ankou (8)
LB: Takitaki, Goodson, M Smith, Phillips, TBD (5)
S: Yikes. Joseph, Sendejo, Redwine, TBD, TBD (5)
CB: Ward, Greedy, Mitchell, T Thomas, K Johnson, TBD (6)
(24) On D
-------------------------------------------------------
Comments:
P Brown may beat out Carlson at TE. I think they both play STs;
I've read more "stuff" on RB D Johnson than Hilliard. They might flip;
I'm keeping (6) WRs. I think DPJ replaces Ratley (size and speed guy) due to STs, T Taylor and Ratley both are NFL wideouts. Not 100$ confident in Natson. I think the first (5) I listed are locks;
We have (5) Centers on our roster right now and (3) Gs and Tretter looks out for Week #1 - remember that week #2 is the next Thursday night...so Tretter could miss the first two. There are several guys who could be the 9th OL...a pick'em
I think P Gustin could make the team if "they" determine that C Thomas can play "some" DT. Is Gustin a better choice than Ankou even thought they are as different as night and day. I think Ankou is our Billings for 2020.
If I am correct on (5) LBS, the 5th guy will be the best STer of the group. I think they like W Harvey the most.
We have some young S's on the roster with none being a "name" and I think we need (2) more on the 53 than I listed...and Woods supposedly likes a 3rd S look. Yikes x 2.
With Greedy being injured (again) and K Johnson on the mend I might most-be wrong on the # of CB being (6) here...maybe at the expense of the 5th S or 6th WR? I've read a lot on Olumbu (big CB), they signed UDFA AJ Green to some $$$ and D Lewis (7th Rd Pk 2019) is back.
The Practice Squad now has (16) guys...(4) guys per week can be protected (finally) and (6) guys can be vets with unlimited # of accrues seasons. Two guys per week can be called up to the (53) for gameday - making it (55) - but I think only (48) can (still) be active.
I think a Kicker will eventually be on the PS for COVID-insurance.

It’s gotta be Porter Gustin over Chad Thomas at this point, right? Gustin has been playing with the ones.

He's much more of a run-stopper (20 lbs heavier too) and Gustin is more of a pass rusher...IMO. I think I remember the Thomas-to-DT-on-passing-downs comment/thought last year?

Olumbu will make the roster IMO
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Garrett Gilbert to the Protected practice squad. All he's doing is running the scout team and we can pull him up for a few weeks at any point during the year. 3rd string QB's scream protected PS to me. QB: (2): Mayfield and Keenum RB: (3): Chubb, Hunt, Johnson FB: (1): Janny TE: (5): Hooper, Bryant, Njoku, Carlson, Brown (unless Njoku is traded) WR: (6): Beckham, Landry, Higgins, DPJ, Hodge (specialist), and either Ratley or Natson (depending on Special Teams choices) O-Line: (9): Wills, Bitonio, Tretter, Teller, Conklin, Harris, Lamm, Hubbard and whoever D-Line: (9): Garrett, Clayborn, Vernon, Gustin, Richardson, Ogunjobi, Elliott, Ankou and whoever wins the last spot LB (5): Goodson, TakiTaki, Phillips, Smith and Davis (until Wilson's return) DB (10): Ward, Williams, Mitchell, Stewart, Thomas (specialist), Olumba (Until KJ's return), Joseph, Sendejo, Redwine and whoever wins between Hassell and Benton. Moving Gilbert to protected PS allows the extra 5th TE in case a trade materializes for Njoku or he starts to pan out. The FB used in this scheme costs Hilliard his spot, but his returns duties were almost exclusively kickoff return and can be replaced (not to mention we already have two bell-cows back there. Probably not going to agree with some of my later guys but I always preferred the idea of allowing the ST Coach to tie-break the tail end of the roster. Can't think of anyone else to make protected on the practice squad, though with 16 spots open, I'd be all for carrying a kicker. Think about it...could you imagine your kicker failing his covid screening the day before a game and you have to scramble to get a street free agent in and hope they've been keeping their leg up to snuff. No thank you. Still leaves 3 other protected spots and 14 other spots total on the practice squad.

I like the Gilbert idea on the PPS...remember though that all players outside the first 53 must clear waivers before being put on the PS. I don't think any teams are jones-ing to steal Gilbert, but with COVID who knows?
I agree on the kicker. Once the 53s are settled across the league, I think a lot of Ks are going to get a PS gig for 2020.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens with the (6) vets eligible for the PS.

Had there been a preseason this year, I would've liked to see Gilbert get some playing time again in a couple of the games (if for other reason than to see what, if anything, he might be worth for a desperate team looking for depth before game #1).
He had flashes in last year's preseason.

We've got lots of guys with economics degrees in the front office, so I don't think the sunk cost fallacy will be much of an issue. Plus, Thomas was someone else's pick. Thomas could still make the roster, but I don't think it'll be because of draft pedigree. It looked like things started to click for him a bit at times later in the season last year. It'll be interesting to see how the roster shakes out this year.

Rookies get a minimum of $8.4M while for vets it's $12K? Methinks it's $8.4K and $12K.

He is only 23.
Played for Alabama. I read what little there is about him. Have not seen him play.
He fills a need and has been a starter.
Seems like he is worth trading for. Maybe he can help. A fifth rounder's odds to even make a team are not all that good. So, we will see.

The #Browns have signed T Brady Aiello. Aiello is a 6-6, 307 pound rookie out of Oregon. He was signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent and was waived by the Vikings on Aug. 15. Aiello appeared in 47 games for the Ducks who boasted one of the best o-lines in the nation. https://twitter.com/camijustice/status/1301882432615059457

Interesting physical specs. Their line was solid; so this may give us some depth or PS perhaps.
How much should we read into this as far as our current T situation? Or is this some utility lineman who can play up and down the line? Good pick up?

UDFA dropped by another team with impressive physicals? Sounds like a fun side project-type talent.
We'll hear about him again, one way or another, in a year or so.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

From various sources and reports, the #Browns have cut the following players so far: C Jon Toth, C Willie Wright, LB Willie Harvey, QB Kevin Davidson and RB Benny LeMay. They have to make 24 moves by 4 today https://twitter.com/MaryKayCabot/status/1302241046399725568

Not only are practice squads expanding to 16 players this year, but 6 of those spots can be occupied by vested veterans (4+ years of service). An important note this weekend, as veterans let go today have a better chance of finding work again sooner. https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1302247754853482498

With Kevin Johnson and Mack Wilson having to be on the final 53 in order for us to call them back from the IR later this season, it will be interesting to see if any of today's cuts will be back with the team on Monday.

With the #Browns waiving CB Donovan Olumba, it means undrafted rookie A.J. Green, praised Thursday by fellow CB Denzel Ward, has a chance to make the initial 53 https://twitter.com/MaryKayCabot/status/1302255053647081472

I'd rather have Olumba back, but...meh...I only had him sticking until KJ returned anyway.

To the protected practice squad or do we go with another #3?

To the protected practice squad or do we go with another #3? Think I might go Davidson to the practice squad instead of Gilbert. Would hope neither would have to ever play this season. I'd rather the young guy had time to possibly grow into something down the line.

Shockingly no surprises thus far.
Still hoping we re-sign Olumba once we''ve got Johnson and Wilson on the IR, though.

Browns have informed RB D’Ernest Johnson he has made the 53 as of now, per source. Johnson beat out Dontrell Hilliard, who was cut earlier today, for the No. 3 RB job in training camp. https://twitter.com/Jake_Trotter/status/1302270431823527938
