What is a practice squad protection?

For the first time ever, NFL teams are allotted protection over a portion of their practice squad members.

With expanded practice squads of 16 players this season, teams can safeguard up to four players every week from being signed to another team’s 53-man roster.

j/c It's hard to figure out if it's a just this week move or a "permanent" move from that release. I think it's just for this week since they mentioned the COVID 2 "call ups" rule.

Fun - but probably useless - facts on AJ Green + :

Green and Greedy are our two tallest CBs...each with 2" on the next tallest in KJ who is 6' (on tomorrow's 53+ anyway). Green has 10+ lbs on Greedy.

Robert Jackson is on the PS. He too is 6'2" (like Greedy & Green) but has 10+ lbs on Green...who has 10+ lbs on Greedy.

I haven't found anything with Ward being inactive today....However I wouldn't be surprised if they pull him near game time at the last minute....just to prevent him from further injury.

I saw a bit where we brought up CB AJ Green from the practice squad. We also signed another kicker to the PC.

I read where seveal teams are keeping a kicker on the PC.

In this covid era, you can't just sign a kicker and bring them up. You have to wait 3 days to be cleared. If Parkey got hurt say on Thursday or Friday, or came down with some illness, you would have to go in to Sundays game with no kicker. Hard to win games with no kicker.

Makes sense to me.

Must be looking for a punt returner. I can't remember if he returns kicks or not.

If I am thinking of the right guy, he does and I think he is pretty good at it. At least while at UNC. I think he had some good ones while with the steelers.

Yeah, he played at UNC. I'm assuming we are looking at him as a returner since we do not need another WR.

Both Stefanski and Priefer have been effusive in their praise of him. I think he’ll stick.

My guess is that Higgins would have been active and played most of DPJ’s offensive snaps last week if the team were able to swap him out for Hodges.

I agree and think that is not anywhere near a knock on Hodges or DPJ...or even Higgins. Hodges and DPJ are very different players than-is Higgins.

Losing Hodges on STs is a problem. He's still been very good there while also being WR#3.

It doesn't make sense to activate Higgins if he's not going to take offensive snaps as he doesn't play STs. Higgins should be WR #3 Sunday...but I won't be shocked if he's not.

Greg Senat is the rare exception where he beat ’em and joined ’em.

The Dallas Cowboys plucked Senat, a third-year offensive tackle, from the Cleveland Browns‘ practice squad and signed him to the active roster, the team announced Tuesday.

Senat’s addition — two days after Dallas was defeated by Cleveland — was the corresponding roster move following the release of defensive back Brandon Carr and OT Alex Light. The team also added OT William Sweet to the practice squad.

A 2018 sixth-round pick, Senat (6-6, 305) entered the NFL with the Ravens, spending his entire rookie campaign on injured reserve. He was waived by Baltimore in September 2019.

The Chiefs claimed Senat off waivers two days later but similarly moved him to IR that November, well before Kansas City would go on to win the Super Bowl. He was waived last month and quickly latched onto the Browns’ taxi squad, where he spent the first four weeks of this season.

Senat played collegiately at Wagner where he was a two-sport athlete — football and basketball. He made 22 career starts for the Seahawks across five eligible years. Lauded for his long arms (84.5 inches) but knocked for his inexperience, he drew pre-draft comparisons to current Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

A team can't grap a player from your practice squad to move their practice squad.

Never heard of him before. Apparently spent aa couple years on practice squads before being called up in emergency duty for 8 total games last year (Chiefs and Titans).

Sounds like a 5-8 defensive snap count kind of guy.

Richardson, Ogunjobi, Billings and Elliott...

I remember thinking we were deep, and remember when Billings opted out...Was surely hoping we would add a vet to take his place on a one year deal (considering Billings contract carries over to next year) Now we have to rely on our rook and a practice squad talent to step up big and play positively. I really hope they are up to task.
