Falcons Fire Sale?

Ricardo Allen
ATL • FS

Allen has quietly been one of the steadiest pieces of Atlanta's secondary for some time, never logging a single Pro Bowl nod but thrice recording multiple interceptions and four times eclipsing 50 tackles at the back end of the defense. He turns 29 in December, however, and is owed $8.375M in 2021, the final year of his contract. At this point in his career, he is what he is: A serviceable veteran safety. There's no reason, with Dan Quinn gone and the "D" set to undergo an overhaul, Atlanta shouldn't see what it can get from a team that could use proven experience in the defensive backfield.

Potential compensation: 2021 late-round draft pick
Potential landing spots: Colts, Cowboys, Eagles

Is he something we should be looking at? And if not, who else should we be trying to trade for? I'd imagine the bottom teams willing to dump salary in a lost year within a crazy pandemic, and with Trevor the prize at the end of the year.

While I don't see this FO having an itchy enough trigger finger to swap veterans for veterans at the safety position to try to find someone that works (much less give up picks to do so, which I'm assuming the Falcons are looking for), I would hope that they would pull the trigger if a young, promising player at a position of need becomes available (in the vein of Fitzpatrick to the Steelers last season).

Obviously, this is not a tell-all, but Allen's PFF grade is 61.7, which is 36th out of 83 ranked safeties. He is only 5'9" and weighs 186 lbs.

I can't speak to what my eyes tell me because while I recognize the name, I have never focused on his play.

The Falcons secondary has not been good historically. Whether that has to do with the CBs, Safeties, or whatever I’m not sure

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

The Falcons president said they’ll only be trading players if they are overwhelmed with an offer. He said he’s going to let their new GM make any roster decisions.

(This seems dumb to me. They are missing out on the chance to stockpile assets.)

I wonder if ATL will try to unload Grady Jarrett's rather large salary?

A friend at work (Jets fan) said that he heard Quinnen Williams was on the trading block. Anyone heard this?

Looking at PFF Allen has been average at best this year and last year after missing most of 2018 and his coverage rating has been below average.

So you’re saying he’d be a huge upgrade over Pendejo?

... but probably not someone worth giving up draft assets for.

A draft asset includes a seventh round pick, right?

I doubt we would trade for him given his contract, age, and overall performance.

I think we aren’t trading for him because the person in charge of the Falcons said they aren’t trading anyone because they don’t have a GM.

I think both are true.

Most of these seem wacky, but I'd gladly give a 2nd for Justin Simmons, dunno why the Broncos would do that deal though.

Bard and Ytown - you guys are awesome.
I actually hadn't realized that there were so many exceptions to that rule.

The Vikings are 1-4 most likely out of the playoff picture.

Anthony Harris is 29.

Of course KS knows him and what he brings to the table.

I don't know what it would take to get him?

However, he is probably a guy they may look at.

Not sure that Minny would trade a guy they franchise tagged in the off season, they must like him or they wouldn't have tagged him plus Minny isn't in rebuild mode they just need shore up their defense.

There were rumors that we were going to sign Anthony Harris before Minnesota, surprisingly, franchise tagged him.

The fact that they tagged him doesn't mean much other than they got him under contract for one more year. If they don't trade him he will likely leave after the season with no immediate compensation.

With that said, Minnesota (and Mike Zimmer) doesn't seem like a team that will pack it in.

IMO Berry will or already has looked into this.

Viking's are at that point where he won't make a difference. So moving him rather than paying him would make sense.

It will give them assets and money to spend in other areas.

At 29 with a pay day coming? I doubt they keep him.

Before Dak's injury I was going to float to the board signing him to a long-term contract in the off season.

Stefanski's offense is pretty emasculating to QBs. We just need someone competent+. Dak is even better than that.

Yeah, I agree. If Dallas is going to play games with him, let's steal him away.

Good excuse to explore a functional qb since Bakers injured

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I know Yannick was disgruntled with the Jags...Not sure if he was disgruntled with the Vikings as well...All I know, is with the Ravens, he will probably blossom as they seem to always get the better end in trades...That's a great trade for Baltimore, going to be even tougher defensively.

Yup. Browns always find a way to make the season more and more Browns as it goes on. I'm not quite sure why we're not doing any deadline trades. I wonder if the FO knows this year is maxed out at WC anyways and wants to save for the future. Probably smart overall, but feels depressing right now.

A lot has to do with who is available. Typically give up a decent draft pick for a guy whose contract is up at the end of the season.
