NFL | Goodell says league will look into playing Super Bowl in London Mon, 15 Oct 2007 20:10:40 -0700 The Associated Press reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league will look into playing a future Super Bowl in London. "There's a great deal of interest in holding a Super Bowl in London. So we'll be looking at that," Goodell said Monday, Oct. 15. Goodell said London's new Wembley Stadium would make a great candidate to host a Super Bowl. ...Don't think I like this idea too much at all..

Does it really matter? The "real fan" hasn't been able to attend a SuperBowl in decades.

Get a link on this so it doesn't get deleted.
I saw this earlier on cnnsi.com. This Goodell is really something. I'm not necessarily opposed to playing a few games during the season over there (or another Country), but you keep the Super Bowl in the USA.
I'd like to see the winner of the Super Bowl get to host the event the next 2-3 years and keep that running, but the NFL feels that certain cities (see every city not named Miami, Tampa, San Diego, Phoenix, LA, New Orleans, Houston) are not capable of holding such an event. Hogwash.

B.S. You keep EVERY NFL game where it belongs....in the US. If London wants to host a game, they need a team, damnit.

What revenue would they be losing? They'll still get the sponsors and TV deals, and that's where the real money is made anyway. The game will still be a sellout, full of corporate sponsors that will fly over the ocean to attend, rather than fly across the country to attend. They'll likely play the game later at night over there, which would put the game around the same television time that we get anyway.
I don't think you see anything change really, except for maybe more tabloid-rag photographers on the sideline.

jc.... I fail to see why games cannot be played outdoors in the miserable cold and snow. Thats real football weather . Sponsors and the yuppies that pay extraordinary ticket prices wouldn't agree but the heck with them. IMO

Wait,, didn't we just stop NFLe,,,,, And wasn't it because of a general lack of interest?
So, where is all this interest in having a SB in London coming from all of a sudden..
DUMB idea Roger,,,,

See, thats what I thought. It isn't like Football is going to compete with soccer or anything. The market is here in the good old U.S.A. and no matter how much the greedy little pencil pushers want the market to expand to the rest of the world it doesn't look like that is gonna happen.

This is absolute b.s. If they want to watch AMERICAN football, they can get a satellite like everyone else. To take one of the most American things we have and send it overseas will have guys like Paul Brown and Vince Lombardi rolling in their graves. It's bad enough we have to pimp out teams out to play over there, but not the Super Bowl.
As was mentioned above, NFL Europe showed a lack of interest. That's their problem, not ours.

Like London's weather is any better than most of the northern cities.
I have a HUGE problem with cities getting a SB that are NO warmer or NO sunnier than cities they won't allow in the US.

Obviously I am a tad biased on this NFL Europe failing has no baring on this. The NFL has a huge following in England and overseas. The Dolphins game in London could have sold out many times over. I have seen some tickets go for $1,000. Having the Superbowl over here is a different proposition. I cant see how it would work, mainly because of the time difference. Unless the NFL were willing to allow the Superbowl to kick off at 1pm EST

The day the Superbowl is played in London, or NOT in the U.S. of A. for that matter, is the day I quit watching football.

I'm sure it would sell out easily, I just think it would be wrong. The Super Bowl belongs in the U.S. What would the NFL be thinking, allowing all that revenue to go to London instead of an American city?

Oh the NFL would still be getting their money, but some US city would be losing out big time.

Well yes, you and Water have a good point with the "hurting the american economy in favor of globalization" angle.
From the NFL's standpoint though, there would be no revenue loss, and only more to be earned. From a fan stand point, unless you're a restaurant owner in Miami or San Diego, you're not going to notice a difference. The game will still be televised in the afternoon, and you still won't be able to afford to go unless you make a 6-figure+ income.

Well I'm not and I agree that I wouldn't personally notice a difference, but it goes beyond restaurant owners... hotel staff, restaurant staff, parking garages, tourist attractions, caterers, etc... the super bowl brings A LOT of money to a city.

Thats a relative statement.
Sure the NFL has a "huge" following in England and overseas (England is overseas), if you are comparing England's interest in the NFL to say Afghanistan.
Not so "huge" if you compare it to the United States of America.
NFL games belong in the USA.
If England or China or Mexico or whatever other country wants to host a game..... START A LEAGUE!

And lets hope they don't...Canada is the ONLY other country I would consider, and I am not real crazy about that idea either.
I don't want my team having to travel overseas to play a game....too much risk IMO..and Mexico...forget that place. You would have to cart in your own water for ice and Gatorade mix.

I'd love to see this: Superbowl in London in exchange for UEFA Championship in Dallas Just to see everyones panties in a bunch. Those fans in England, France, Germany etc would probably start a war if this happened.

Why this is a good idea: Playing the Super Bowl in London would take America's largest sprting event and taking it abroad. The buzz could be enough to jumpstart American Football worldwide, thus creating more interest and revenue from overseas.
Why this is a bad idea: NFL Europa didn't fair well at all. Europe just doesn't seem to have that great an interest (like America and soccer). Fans would have to travel to a foreign country to attend the game (though someone hit the nail on the head when they talked about real fans haven't been able to go in forever anyways. The bottom line is this is an American sport you are trying to sell to the rest of the world. European soccer doesn't have it's championship in America. Neither does Rugby. While media interest would be great (American media would follow), people in London and Europe probably would care that much at all.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
