Just saw this.
When "Dr.No" and then "From Russia with Love" first came out I was in 10th grade. All the crew I hung with flipped out. We all thought that Bond was coolest dude of all time. Then "Goldfinger" came out and that did it.
No young guy growing up didn't want to be like that.
He had the cool. At the same time he was threatening and lethal. Women? Forget about it. He became the "it" man.
I applaud him for getting of that franchise. He went to have a distinguished career.
RIP Sean Connery.

Sad news indeed. For my generation he was Bond. And I haven't seen anyone do it better since.

He is probably only 3 on mu list of Bonds. I grew up with Roger Moore as Bond, and then after a few miscues, the franchise hit a grand slam with Daniel Craig.
All of that said ... I don't know if there would have been a James Bond franchise without Sean Connery. RIP Sean. I am sure there's a martini, shaken, not stirred, awaiting you at the pearly gates. RIP

Dude was sophisticated while being all man. He was perfect for the role of James Bond. He was also very good in several other movies.
Bro, when you get to be around my age, it's tough seeing all these legends and/or icons pass away. It's like the Grim Reaper keeps tapping on my shoulder and saying "it won't be long."

Beyond the Bond films, I really liked Outland, The Name of the Rose and (of course) Hunt for Red October.

As much as I liked him as James Bond, my favorite Connery role was as Jimmy Malone in The Untouchables ... "If he sends one yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! Its the Chicago way.". I thought he saved that movie from Costner's wimpy portrayal of Eliot Ness.

Always thought that an underrated film was "The Man Who Would Be King" with Sean Connery and his close friend Michael Caine.
It was directed by John Huston in 1975.
It was a very interesting movie. A favorite film of Michael Caine's.

Whaaat, they were just talking about him on the Buckeye pregame, but didn't mention he died. It was a whole, "I ran into him localy 20 years ago" and then the others silently agreeing while suggesting it was a look a like, not really him. And then, I read he died.  Connery and Pierce Brosnan are the only two bonds I recognize.

He has remained Bond in my opinion. Best of all. His amazing car and gadgets were great, and many worked to some degree. The women were stunning. The music themes!
Never boring, and he defined the franchise setting the standard and the bar for all who followed. Thanks for the work.

Kind of a cool, obscure story about Sean Connery:
My grandparents on my father's side divorced when my dad was very young. My grandfather got remarried to a woman named Teresa Stompanato. She did not like my dad very much, perhaps because he was a child from a prior marriage.
But, anyhow, my dad would go visit my grandfather and step-grandmother from time to time. There was one time he attended a dinner party that was being held by Teresa's brother, Johnny. My dad described him as "kind of dumb, but stone cold." Johnny was a mobster, the bodyguard of Mickey Cohen, and he was dating Lana Turner. My dad always went out of his way to be very nice to Teresa and Johnny because he didn't want to end up on the bottom of a river bed. He said Johnny was very curt and very intimidating.
Anyhow, Johnny was also very jealous. Lana Turner ended up acting in a movie with Sean Connery in the 50's. Connery was in his late 20's and obviously considered attractive. Johnny became jealous of Connery and confronted him with a pistol. Connery actually disarmed him and - according to my dad - punched him in the face. Stompanato fled. Later on, Lana Turner's daughter stabbed Johnny to death after he and Lana got into a physical altercation. For whatever reason, some of the mob blamed Connery and he had to go into hiding.
To make a short story long, Connery was a bad ass. Disarmed and overpowered a member of the mob. Dude definitely earned all the manly man notoriety he received.
