New York Jets' Adam Gase admits he hasn't helped Sam Darnold develop as NFL QB

New York Jets coach Adam Gase was hired nearly two years ago in large part to groom quarterback Sam Darnold for success. On Thursday, Gase admitted for the first time that he's failing.

"I came here to help him, help him develop his career, and we haven't been able to do that," said Gase, who is 7-20 and has presided over the NFL's worst offense for the better part of two seasons.

His comments might seem obvious, considering the team's profound struggles, but they're noteworthy because Gase always has spoken of Darnold's progress in an optimistic fashion. His assessment comes with five games left in the season, after which the coach likely will be fired.

Sam Darnold's Touchdown Drought

Sam Darnold hasn't thrown a passing touchdown in his past 142 attempts, the longest active streak in the NFL, according to Elias Sports Bureau data. If Darnold doesn't throw for a TD within his first 8 attempts Sunday, he'll be the only player in the past five seasons to go 150 straight attempts without a touchdown. Nick Foles (2015) was the last player to do that.

Gase said he hopes Darnold can finish on an upswing.

"That's why every game is so important," he said. "Keep trying to help him grow, keep trying to help him develop and see things the way he needs to see them and play the way I've seen him play in certain games."

Gase made it clear he's not blaming Darnold for the historically bad season (0-11), saying every position has contributed to the problems.

"We need to do things well around him, but at the same time, it's on me to get him to play better than what he's played," Gase said. "I haven't done a good enough job."

Darnold, speaking to reporters after practice, took accountability when asked about Gase's comments.

"First of all, I take full responsibility for the way I've played," he said. "I haven't played well enough. Like I continue to say every single week, we have great people in this organization. With that being said, everyone is going to take blame for certain part of us losing.

Why is Adam Gase (7-20) still coaching the New York Jets?

Projected 2021 NFL draft order: It's Jets vs. Jaguars for the No. 1 pick

Let's fix the NFL's worst teams: Barnwell's plans for the Jets, Jags, Chargers and Lions
"But for me, personally, I've got to play better and put the team in the right position to have a chance to win games and make it close at the end."

Darnold is 0-7 this season (he missed four games with a shoulder injury) and has engineered only six touchdown drives. He's the lowest-rated passer in the NFL, with a career-low 64.0 rating. He has gone four straight games without a touchdown pass, the longest drought for a Jets quarterback since Geno Smith in 2013.

"Yeah, it's frustrating," Gase said of the touchdown drought. "For him personally, I'm sure he's bothered by it, knowing things like that.

"I look at it as we've got to do a better job as a staff. We've got to put these guys in the best position possible, and those guys have to go execute. It's on all of us. We have to find a way to do a better job. We have to find a way to put the ball in the end zone."

Darnold, drafted third overall in 2018, is coming off a two-interception performance against the Miami Dolphins. He hopes to reverse the trend Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium.

His future is a major question. The Jets likely will have the first or second pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and they could have a choice between Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State's Justin Fields, the presumptive top two picks.

If general manager Joe Douglas decides to draft one of them, he will look to trade Darnold, who has one year remaining on his rookie contract. The amount of his fifth-year option for 2022 is expected to be about $25 million, fully guaranteed -- a seemingly prohibitive salary.

"This kid is the most mentally tough kid I've ever been around," offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. "There's going to be a really bright future for Sam Darnold."

Just a thought for the Jest: You are telling the wrong people what has to be done for Darnold.

You know. He knows. Overpaid for his production at your hands. SMH. Just my reaction to this silly cliche of an interview. Fix it.

at this point, Rosen and Darnold are not good.

Josh Allen and Baker and Lamar Jackson are all in the other category. I think Lamar is the most shakey of the 3. Allen and Mayfield will be above average. Lamar could end up being the next RG3.

From a career perspective, Baker has the upper hand vs everyone else drafted in his class.

First off Darnold is only 23.

He was put behind the eight ball going to the Jets.

Mahomes would look bad playing for the J E T s.

Darnold has played poorly. However, if you have no OL and no receivers and no running game kinda hard to play well.

He had mono and now a shoulder injury.

If he goes to the right team like the Saints. My guess is his career will hit restart and he will do well.

The Jets put him into a no win situation. Gase has been a disaster as a head coach. The team has no talent.

Darnold will get another chance somewhere.

We shall see how that goes.

I wanted Darnold more than Mayfield. Glad I was wrong, although the Jets haven’t done Darnold any favors. I think Baker is finally being coached, so I’m hoping he’ll be able to salvage a good career here

During that draft process I did a deep dive into that quarterback class.

I remember doing a breakdown of the top five.

I really liked Darnold. He was the best pure playmaker of all of them.

Rosen threw a good ball and had flawless mechanics. But I had issue with his mobility and leadership quality. He played in a NFL scheme and appeared to be the most ready for the NFL game.

Allen had great upside potential but was the least developed and had the highest risk.

Lamar had rare physical skills but was inaccurate and fell back on his running ability to often.

Baker was smallish. Played with a chip on his shoulder. Was very accurate. Terrific leader. But he played in a system that drove big stat numbers and was far from a NFL system.

I thought Baker would need some time and needed to be in the right system. He is not a special physical talent like Allen or Lamar. Not a big guy to absorb big hits. Was elusive but not fast. Could throw well on the run but was no runner. I made clear he would have to learn NFL defenses and that would take some time.

Sam had size and mobility. Not a overpowering arm but good enough. He was excellent at extending plays and throwing on the run. Played really well in the clutch. Great leader. Respected and well liked. Mentally tough. Thought his skill set would transfer well to the NFL. But he came out early and was young. He came into the NFL in need of good coaching.

He has never gotten that.

So Gase sucks as a coach? I don't care too much except for one person I know who likes the Jets.
Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, long stay Gase the Jets coach, I want to see the Browns beat them, and 3-31-1 ?? after all those 2 and 3 and 4 win years? I don't care that the Jets are losing, somebody has to lose, I'm a Browns fan.

Salvage?

Um, he destroyed rookie records, His stats vs other QB's in their first 3 years, he is in the top 4?

These numbers should say it all:

The 41 games prior to Baker Mayfield playing: 2-38-1

The 41 games with Baker Mayfield playing: 21-20

It is very hard for a quarterback to play well when the talent around him is subpar.

It becomes almost impossible to look good when the front office and head coach are terrible.

Gase strikes me as one of those guys who's brilliant, but cannot relate to his players on a personal, or mentoring level, and cannot guide a team. His ceiling is as an offensive coordinator.

Peyton Manning sang his praises and the two worked very well together because I believe they were of similar minds. Gase could talk his concepts at a high level and did not have to break things down for Manning. He also had the advantage of focusing on the offensive scheme and not setting the tempo for the team as a whole. Something we often see with good coordinators who fail as HCs.

When he left and became a head coach on two teams with younger QBs, he floundered. He rubbed players the wrong way, he struggled to delegate, and it appears he could not develop the QB talent he had.

We'll see. If he goes to a team that has a veteran, savvy QB, I'm sure he could do very well again in a specified role.

You hit the nail on the head IMO.

It happens often that guys are better as coordinators than as head coaches.

There are many examples of that Wade Phillips. Romeo. Lindy Infante and many others.

And even though many head coaches come from the ranks of being coordinators. The skill set for a head coach is different.

Kevin Stefanski has been very impressive to me.
He seems to have the skills of a head coach.

I do believe if Sam Darnold lands in the right place. He will have a good shot at becoming a good player.

Yes. That could happen. I think the Saints may also be a possibility.

I think a number of teams may be willing to trade for him.

Daman Couch is exactly whom I was thinking about when I made the post. I liked Tim and thought he could be our QB for many years but he got a raw deal. Baker reminds me a lot of him but at least as of this season he's starting to get some talent and good coaching support.

He probably can't get through to Darnold because when Sam looks at him he sees Ted Bundy. I think when Darnold talked about "seeing ghosts" he meant when he looked into his coach's eyes.

The 2018 NFL draft was my first season as a Brown supporter so take my opinion with a pinch of salt as I’m a rookie. This is my take.

Josh Rosen was by far the least talented from my perspective. A Korean Hyundai who look good on the outside but after a couple of minutes behind the steering wheel you quickly change your opinion.

Josh Allen had the size, the physical attributes and the mental toughness but looked rough on the edges. His ceiling was high but at the time of the draft his status was nowhere near a number one pick. Typical Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra. Good old fashion sports car, not the most modern but a pick that can’t go wrong.

Lamar Jackson was the hidden diamond in the sand. Elite acceleration and speed but his arm talent was questionable. Deadly weapon with the right surroundings but a average to borderline bad pick in the wrong set up. Like a Top Fuel on the dragstrip. One trick pony.

Sam Darnold was like a Volvo Combi. Safe and reliable but zero sex appeal. He had it all but it was difficult to get excited because something in his approach screamed “average”. In a way the NY Jets matched his ambitions.

Then it was Baker Mayfield. His size and physical attributes was nothing to write home about. Questionable character, a walk on, police incidents and maybe he had too much self confidence for his own good.

Still he was the one who I laid my eyes on. Like a magnet. Well spoken. Intelligent. His swagger. His leadership.

He was like a luxury stripper, you know you’re not supposed to peek but you can’t help yourself. For those who knows Hypercars he’s like a Pagani Zonda. All the other comparable cars have better quality, more speed and are technically better built but in the end you know who fix the chicks and the rest doesn’t matter

All I know is one thing: if I’m a GM about to draft a QB in the first round, I’m signing Tyrod Taylor to be my starter beforehand.

Kinda curious as to who is gonna bite and trade for Darnold.

I liked him... I also have a sore spot for teams that ruin prospects...Err sore spot for QBs that get ruined by bad teams . Dude could have some success in the league if he can get the hell out of new york IMO.

Did I ever tell you the story, about how for 5 minutes on draft day, noon, while driving,

the local radio led me to believe the Browns had made a deal with Josh Allen and were going to fill us in after commericals. (A bad choice of comments before the commercial made it sound as if there was a deal)

For 5 minutes I believed Allen was the pick, not happy because I wanted Baker, but in 3 minutes you start to accept it. And it took a little while understand the pick was still yet to be made.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

You know...Not that I think it could or would happen...But...if Darnold leaves the Jets...I would love to pick him up. I like Darnold's moxie. I think he is a good leader. I think he has good ball skills. He is also bigger than Mayfield. And he has been put in a very bad situation that hasn't allowed him to develop.

Coming to Cleveland could reboot his career. I think he would be a good candidate for Stefanski's offense. Sitting behind Mayfield could afford him some time to develop. We will always need at least 2 QB's in today's NFL. (and no I haven't forgotten about Keenum.)

I think we get a more than capable backup, and Sam gets to rebuild his resume...

Of course he can go to the Saints, Pittsburgh, or another location and start...But I think he would develop more in our situation...long term vs short term...

Just sayin...

interesting idea!

I think that he will start somewhere else. I am not a fan of bringing in a cap eater at the backup spot when we could draft someone that can learn behind baker and be our game manager if he gets hurt. We have limited resources now that we will pick up his 5th year option. He becomes a 20 million dollar QB... vs the 9 mill he is at now

There's only one problem I see with that scenario. Darnolds agents would want to find a team without stability at the QB situation. A place they could see him being the eventual starter or at least have some reasonable shot at the starting QB position moving forward. We are not that place.

I don't believe that Sam or those that represent him believe his career is at the point where all 32 teams see him as being relegated to permanent back up status. And with Gase admitting he hasn't really done the job of developing him, I'd venture to guess there are at least a few teams who feel that may be the case as well.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Jets may hold onto him now that they no longer have the #1 pick. They have a few first round picks over the next couple of years as well.

A new HC committed to developing Darnold and using those draft picks to upgrade their talent may be in play now.

FWIW - I do not see him coming to CLE to be a backup. If the Jets were to move him, I think they would most likely move him to an NFC team (NO, CAR, WA, DET, SF, CHI).
