Arizona GOP files ‘2nd Amendment Sanctuary’ bill to ban state aid in federal anti-gun activity

A handful of Arizona Republicans are behind a push to make their state the fifth to keep state resources from assisting in any federal activity they consider contrary to the Second Amendment.

State Rep. Leo Biasiucci, R-Lake Havasu City, filed the Second Amendment Firearm Freedoms Act on Jan. 14. Like other measures, it would ban the use of local resources from enforcing any federal law or executive rule that could be seen as running afoul the constitutional right to bear arms.

“This state and all political subdivisions of this state are prohibited from using any personnel or financial resourced to enforce, administer, or cooperate with any act, law, treaty, order, rule or regulation of the United States government that violates Amendment II of the Constitution of the United States,” the bill reads.

Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, and Wyoming have passed similar measures.

The bill also declares any federal measure deemed to run up against the 2nd Amendment to be “null, void and unenforceable in this state,” but federal laws supersede state-enacted measures. Other similar resolutions have been seen as symbolic.

The bill was introduced just days before President-elect Joe Biden is to be sworn in. On the campaign trail, the former vice president promised to enact gun control measures, including a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and institute universal background checks.

First coined by a southern Illinois state’s attorney in 2010, Second Amendment sanctuaries quickly proliferated and are now standing resolutions in hundreds of towns and counties across the nation.

Supporters say gun sanctuary laws mirror other states keeping cooperation from federal immigration agents attempting to deport undocumented residents.

The Giffords Law Center, named after former Arizona Congresswoman and assassination survivor Gabby Giffords said in a 2019 report that Second Amendment Sanctuaries threaten gun laws that would save lives.

“At a time when states across the country are looking for smart public policy that will reduce gun violence and save lives, gun policy must be based on evidence, not misguided rhetoric,” the report reads.

The fact that the federal government hasn't enforced it's own laws as it pertains to pot being legal in several states, it could be argued that states can now pick and choose which federal laws they choose to enforce. If one can be deemed null and void by a few states, why not open all laws to be null and void upon state choice?

Another troubling question, if the Feds can overlook a few states not following federal laws, why not pass federal laws that only apply to a few states?

They've been doing this gun sanctuary thing for a long time now. That's how you end up with men with long guns walking around in the Michigan state capitol imposing intimidation on elected officials. They think that's their right.

I think they have watched too many episodes of Gunsmoke.

Although it will probably be a felony federal gun offense to carry the illegal fire arms across state lines. And I’m sure there will be sanctuary cities forbidding illegal weapons as they’ll be trying keep them out of the urban area’s and where hunting isn’t allowed.

I've always been a gun rights advocate as well. I'm not afraid, I'm prepared. I'm pretty sure you are as well. I'm not at all worried about my aim. My dad was a Mstr. Sgnt. in the army and I've been firing weapons since I was very young.

You seem to indicate I agree with every word certain posters put on the board? I don't. Heck, every once in a while i even agree with you.

WH Press Sec Jen Psaki: Gun Control ‘a Priority’ for Joe Biden

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Tuesday gun control is “a priority” for President Joe Biden.

Fox News quoted Psaki referenced Biden and stressed gun control is “a priority to him on a personal level.”

She did not offer specifics on Biden’s gun plans, but did mention his support for smart gun technology: “I will say that the president is somebody, throughout his career, who has advocated for smart gun, smart gun safety measures.”

She also suggested Biden is not scared of the NRA: “He is not afraid of standing up to the NRA – he has done it multiple times.”

Psaki said gun control will require the introduction of specific legislation, which she said has not occurred. Moreover, she pointed out that she does not know the likelihood of the legislation passing, once introduced, because it will depend on Congress.

On February 16, 2021, Breitbart News observed Politico Playbook PM’s (PPM) position that Biden’s gun control push is a mess. PPM noted that Biden promised gun control action on day one of his administration, but it did not happen. They then noted gun control proponents got restless and demanded action, leading Biden to ask Congress for specific gun controls on February 14, 2021.

However, after this back and forth, gun control proponents are still in a hurry up-and-wait scenario.
