Bengals | Team could trade C. Johnson this offseason
Mon, 22 Oct 2007 21:05:32 -0700

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis did not deny a rumor that the team may consider trading WR Chad Johnson in the offseason. During ESPN's pregame show Sunday, Oct. 21, ESPN's Chris Mortensen said that a "prominent member of the Bengals organization recently told me recently that the organization does have a decision to make on Chad Johnson, that he is so passionate and proud that if they decided to discipline him for some of those antics they believe he might shut it down. So how he finishes the rest of the year and the Bengals finish could bring them to a crossroads discussion on whether to even trade Chad Johnson in the offseason."

Riiiiiiiiight....they'll trade one of their best players when they stink so much. Don't believe it.

Still find it funny, though. And, no, the Browns don't need to pick him up.

Well, with Henry back next year and Housh becoming a #1, he's not needed as much. He could possibly bring them a first rounder where, along with their own pick, can get two stud defensive players.

..Maybe this is why they're called the Bungles,...CJ works FOR the Bengals,..they pay him millions.

If this team is SO inept that they'd rather trade a guy than make him play by their rules,...they should not only trade CJ but fire Lewis as well.

they would be stupid to trade Chad Johnson... Housh is not a #1 WR... past years he benefited from the double coverage of Chad..

Trade him and their offense will fall apart...

The reports on the radio down here are that players on the team have had meetings with Marvin and they want him gone. His eruptions in the locker room and his "me" attitude with the pouting and pointing fingers are pissing them off. Who knows what's true...I do know Marvin helped create the monster and now he's getting mad at it.

Well, who'll be gone first, Lewis or Johnson? I'll take the bets.

Ohhh God, who runs this team, the FO or Chad? If I acted like a goof at work and my boss got tired of putting up with my crap you better believe I would be gone. unbelievable. Bench his ass! Make his ass inactive so he can't get out there or even dress/be on the sideline. You DON'T let players dictate anything.

Still the same ole Bungles.

Why is anybody who finds him slightly humorous and a bit less offensive than TO labeled a "Chad lover"?

That is really what this is about if you ask me, Lewis is trying to save his job, he knows they need to change something and he needs to regain control of this team... and if that means cutting CJ loose, then that's what they need to do. They will still have ample offensive weapons and they should be able to secure a first day pick for him, which they could use for some defense...

My comment was really about the post a few weeks ago with everyone wanting to build a house in his pants. To find that freak AT ALL funny tells me a lot about people.

listening to 1530 am here in cincy this morning on the way to work was hilarious...the debate was this..."it is clear this town isn't big enough for both Marvin Lewis and Chad johnson, so who do you want to keep and who do you want to get rid of"

the funniest part was many of the callers didnt want to keep either

He is a great player, but if he's causing problems in the locker room and within the team, it will keep the team down. If they can get something good in return and get rid of a distraction at the same time, it may be better than some would think.

I think that's the most likely scenario. Not only does Marvin have Chad's attitude in the locker room (if the rumors are to be believed) that he's allowed to persist this long, but Marvin also has a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG list of players in trouble with the law.

Which one do you think Mike Brown with hold accountable? The supposed locker room cancer, or the coach that can't control his players?

Mike Brown historically holds on to his coaches too long. I would be surprised if he made the move to let Marvin go anytime soon. He doesn't really care all that much about winning, he wants butts in the seats and Marvin turned the program around enough initially to get that done.

Plus the fact this is Marvin's 6th year and he's only had 1 winning season with all that talent they've had on offense.

I admit that on the surface, it doesn't sound likely, but recently wasn't there a bit of an argument with pushing and shoving between the Coach and Chad? I thought that's what was reported in one of the threads here recently..

SO, maybe there is some truth to it..

Is Chad worth the trouble?

Me-first antics make receiver big target - for flak

BY PAUL DAUGHERTY

Ray Oliver, an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Bengals, offers a parable to explain Chad Johnson:

A scorpion asks a turtle for a ride across a lake. The turtle laughs and tells the scorpion he's crazy. "If I give you a ride, you'll sting me,'' he says. The scorpion replies, "Why would I do that? If I sting you in the middle of the lake, we'll both die.''

The turtle agrees to give the scorpion a lift. Halfway across the lake, the scorpion stings the turtle. As both are drowning, the turtle asks the scorpion why he stung him. "It's what I do,'' the scorpion said.

An uneasy peace exists now, between Chad the scorpion and his drowning team. As the 1-4 Bengals prepare to face the 1-5 New York Jets this afternoon, Johnson flails in the center of the lake, a great receiver too often undone by his emotions. He makes the Pro Bowl and reaches the end zone with regularity. He loses self-control almost as often. It's what he does.

Is he worth it?

Would the Bengals be better off with Johnson as he is now - and has always been? Or in the long run, would they be better off without him?

When Marvin Lewis rails against selfishness, Chad is a target.

When he asks for maturity, Chad is a target.

When he suggests teamwork matters, Chad is a target.

When Lewis' failings as a disciplinarian and leader arise, as they have this season, Chad is cited as Exhibit A.

It's hard to preach Team when 10 guys are huddling up and the 11th is over there chatting up the Patriots defense. Or talking to Bill Belichick between plays or jumping into the other team's crowd or indulging in me-only stunts. And the coach does nothing about it.

The coach has talked to the player. And talked. Hue Jackson, the former receivers coach, now in Atlanta, has talked. So has offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, and Johnson's longtime mentor Charles Collins. Everyone close to Johnson in a football sense has told him to channel his emotions in a more positive direction. He stays the scorpion.

Carson Palmer is clearly tired of Eighty-Five's show. After a late, rally-killing interception in Kansas City last week, the QB had to be consoled/restrained by tight end Reggie Kelly as the pair walked off the field. The consensus was that Johnson facilitated the pick by cutting short a route across the middle.

Asked last week about the play, Johnson said he didn't remember it. Palmer said he wouldn't "get into specifics.'' Given that Palmer never calls out teammates in the press, and blames himself when things go bad, it's safe to assume Johnson was at fault.

That followed a public spat between quarterback and star receiver that lasted several minutes on Monday Night Football. If you're 4-1 and your two highest profile players take to airing out each other publicly, it's seen as heat-of-battle stuff. If you're 1-4, losers of four straight, it's cracks in the foundation.

Groups of veteran players have met informally to discuss what to do about Johnson. Some have suggested he sit a game. Lewis could do that, but popular opinion is if that occurs, Lewis would lose Johnson emotionally the rest of the year.

By allowing Chad to be Chad, the coach is leaking precious credibility. The double-standard perception plays worse with every loss. As Cris Collinsworth said this week, "Your best players are the guys that drive the locker room. When Chad implodes, what does the second-string guy chasing kicks feel like he can get away with? The standard has been lowered.''

Collinsworth added, "You have to be realistic about who Chad is. He's about as emotionally high strung as any human being I know. That's great when things are going well. His emotions can drive a locker room. Unfortunately, we're in the middle of the other side of that now.''

There is always the chance that Ocho Cinco will grow up and be the leader he should be, or at least be a neutral presence in the locker room. But almost two seasons have passed since his infamous halftime explosion in the Pittsburgh playoff game, and the scorpion still stings.

Interesting.
I think the bungles should consult HEAVILY with Palmer on this one. He's the franchise. Not Lewis. Not CJ. Everyone else on that team is expendible.
