https://www.brownsnation.com/should-the-browns-pursue-de-carl-lawson-in-free-agency/
This is one player I would love to get.
The Bengals like him a lot. They have cap space. However, they have others they want to sign as well.
I have no idea what Mr. Mike Brown will do?
My guess is they will franchise him.
If they do not and they don't sign him to a new deal. I believe the Browns will go after him in a big way.

I'd be pleased to see lb Lavonte David on our roster. He would be an expensive one though.

He'd change everything, but we need more than that to be championship caliber.

Side Note: I think this is a year we spend it all (wisely) to start making championship runs. Since the cap is so low, and it WILL go back up in 2023 at the latest, I can see us spending crazy this year and next and allowing the 2023 and beyond cap cover it. Acquire bigtime now and basically defer the payments. What's great is that we really only need four big time pieces on defense to take us from trash to stardom on Defense. A DE, a DT, a LB, and a S. If you add a 5th, make it a CB and the rest gets bolstered in the Draft. Next year, we only have to re-sign our own guys and keep drafting well.

I don’t know what championship caliber is but I don’t think you have to have a great defense to win the Super Bowl. Just being able to cover tight ends and running backs with linebacker would be a huge deal.

I'd say that what we saw from the Bucs earlier this month qualifies as Championship caliber.
When you're good enough to utterly stifle and frustrate the most explosive offense in the NFL without having to blitz... that's championship caliber. Your front gets pressure without blitzing. Your back end covers without getting beaten like a drum if the front guys don't get there in less than 2 seconds. Your guys in the middle don't get their lunch eaten every play by drag routes and TE's in the seam. No holes that are so bad that you have to scheme to cover them.
Like our offense, but as a defense.

Good point.
I would say they all don't need to be "Big time".
Better than NFL average would be a big time improvement over Sendejo as an example. If we draft well, we can probably find that in the draft.
My hope is Billings works out as a solid DT. I hope he has been working out and hasn't ballooned up to 360 lbs. Sometimes eating habits don't reduce as workout loads reduce.

I think people underestimate the effect of the injuries the Chiefs had on how good the Buccaneers D looked. Not that the Buccaneers defense isn't good, but our (bad) defense looked almost respectable against the Chiefs the week before. Losing OL and having a hobbled QB is a pretty good recipe for making a defense look better.
I'd love to have Lavonte David, but I'm not sure I see it happening. I might put more stock in it if it hadn't come from MKC. I see him getting franchised in TB, or some other team offering more money. I'd be okay with being wrong, though.

Below NFL average would probably be a big time improvement there.

5 major guys would probably be a stretch.
I'm expecting something similar to last year.
1 big time guy (ie: Jack Conklin) 1 mid-range starter (ie: Austin Hooper---though without the absurd overpay that resets the market) 1 Bonus guy (ie: Case Keenum)
I'd prefer to spend bigger at DE. Mid-range guy would probably be the slot corner or Safety Bonus guy would be Outside CB Depth
We could go big at safety or LB, but we don't know what we have at safety and this regime supposedly does not value LBer too much, so I'm guessing short term guys at those two spots.

rumor down here is Bucs will put the tag on Godwin. I think they will sign david or shaq barrett and let the other walk. Barrett wants to get paid and he will get big money. I could totally see David signing with Bucs and Barrett hitting market. But he'd be perfect here.. still pretty young

Bucs don't have a ton of room to work with. They have about $9.4 million to play with.
The projected franchise tag for a WR in 2021 is $16,430,000. You can't spread that out and Godwin is saying he could be fine playing under the tag (e.g. he knows the tag is more than the cap available and he's in no hurry to negotiate himself out of $16 million this year).

yeah, I think that Barrett will be the one to hit FA. He knows this will be his chance for one last big contract. He's going to want paid. I rather have him than Watt. But I'd take David as a consolation prize

Wish list with an option.
https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/..._16697_34232228
This is complicated as pointed out in this article.
But if Andrew Berry could make this work; it would be huge.
Adding Marshon Lattimore would make our corner duo exceptional.
Then add Watt or Carl Lawson.
Draft Koramoah or Moehrig.
WOW talking about defensive upgrade. That would be it.
Increase front pass rush and add coverage in the middle and back end.
Not just players but stars.
Andrew will have to really put his brain to work but this is doable.
We make these changes Paradise Island here we go.

Lavonte David will still command top-tier $$, even despite the craziness of this offseason. I don't see Berry and co. pursuing (of course, MKC says they are...).
A trade for Lattimore would normally be a pipedream, but who knows what's going to happen this offseason. My question there is... if we were to land Lattimore, I think that might put Greedy solidly on the trade block. There's suddenly no room for him anymore (he's (at best) the 3rd CB who can't play inside). Probably don't need to panic over a guy who's on his rookie deal while we're not in any sort of cap danger, but still.

Andrew Berry has promised to be aggressive.
One thing is clear as we have found out first hand. You can not have enough good corners.
We struggled last year in the secondary.
Greedy is a question although Berry has stated he expects a full recovery. To get Marshon Berry could be part of the deal.
The Saints are in deep problems with cap money. They have to get rid of big dollar salaries.
I don't thing anything I put out there is far fetched.
Will it happen??
We will find out in a few weeks.

I would trade Greedy and a 3rd for Lattimore.
They get salary relief and a capable player, we get a 3x Pro Bowl CB and former Defensive Rookie of the Year.

j/c Veteran DE J.J. Watt to sign two-year deal with Cardinals J.J. Watt has decided on his next NFL home. After weeks of speculation following his departure from the Texans, the veteran defensive end intends to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday. The Cardinals are giving Watt a two-year deal worth $31 million with $23M guaranteed, per Rapoport via an informed source.Around the NFL will have more on this shortly. https://www.nfl.com/news/veteran-de-j-j-watt-to-sign-two-year-deal-with-cardinalsIf the details of this deal are accurate, they paid far more than I would have been comfortable with.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Those aren't including playing time. Guarantees are based on bonuses. That's the minimum he can get irrespective of playing time. Weekly salary is not a part of that amount. Salary isn't included in that figure.

j/c:
A big part of me is glad we didn't sign him. Sure, we have a hole at DE that needs to be addressed, but we have a recent history of acquiring guys with injury concerns and paying them a lot of money. This would have fallen right into that group.
I'm glad we didn't overpay for him at his age and with his recent injuries. (Now watch him play 17 games and be an All-Pro)
