Not sure why local sports talkers keep talking about Sheldon Richardson being released next week? He played great last year - why not try to re-structure if his salary is a problem?

Speaking of local sports talkers - does anyone know what happened to Dustin Fox? He has basically disappeared from the air for more than a week, and his co-host hasn't said a word about it that I've heard.

I've seen this too. My only thoughts would be it takes two to restructure and may he not want to. With his cap hit and the possible guys the FO might want to extend, that's a sizeable amount off the books in 2021.

we have plenty of cap space and losing someone like him would be bunk.

Don't know about him. What station is he on?

Lately I have been listening to Chico after dark. I think his show is interesting. Is he fairly popular up there?

He is on 92.3 the Fan during drive time. He was a former NFL player and an Ohio State Buckeye.

Some info on Clowney from PFF, whom they listed as 'undervalued' as a 2021 FA:

EDGE Melvin Ingram, Los Angeles Chargers and Jadeveon Clowney, Tennessee Titans

It made sense to group these two players together. Both are proven, veteran options — with Ingram being a bit longer in the tooth than Clowney — who are coming off injury-shortened seasons in which they didn’t record a single sack. It’s not as if either player wasn’t getting to the quarterback when they were on the field, though.

Ingram and Clowney each still had pressure rates north of 10% and PFF grades above 70.0 in 2020, and signs point to the zeros in the sack column being more a result of bad variance than a significant decline in their play.

For Clowney, though, the lack of sacks is a recurring theme. In a four-year stretch from 2016 through 2019, his 220 pressures were tied for the 13th-highest mark by any edge defender in the NFL, but his 26 sacks by PFF’s count were tied for only 36th-most in the same group. Prospective teams can expect him to play the run well and consistently find himself in the backfield, but he looks like a rare case of a player whose sack rate repeatedly trails his pressure rate.

Sheldon is a good player.

I do not see the Browns releasing him.

Love his effort. He plays all out. Very good interior player.

Sure hope he remains on the team.

Patriots, maybe?

He definitely protects the ball (up until last year anyway)

Never had the strongest arm but hopefully his leg strength returns enough by next year to drive the ball a little better.

We would be complete FOOLS if we released Richardson.

He's a damn good player, we have ample cap space even at his current cap hit, and we'd dramatically weaken an area we are already weak in. If we cut Richardson, I will become an advocate of firing Berry and replacing him with Kokinis, because if we're gonna go retard, we may as well go Full Retard.

Now, that hyperbole out of the way, I do see us trying to work out an extension, or even just a reworking of the contract that allows us to recoup some cap space next year, but pushes a large portion of the hit to next year, but still allows him to become a free agent next year (if that is what he is wanting), afterall, I could see where he would want to not only get paid in full this year, but also go back into free agency next year. From his side, he needs to maximize what he can put in the bank and we need to be cognizant of that. From our side, we need to pay him, but we also need to pay a bunch of other guys, too... so, it becomes a balancing act and seeing how we can massage numbers.

I'm playing Devil's Advocate more than anything, as he can make his own decisions... but maybe the best thing for him is split with pro football.

I can't say I really disagree with you. Retirement may be his best option if that's what he so chooses. I would just hate to see him being forced out of the game if he still wishes to play because he can't find a team.

I do understand that there comes a point that a player no longer is desired by teams. It's a natural progression that comes with time, diminishing skills and injuries. Maybe that time is now. It's just hard for me not to root for one of the good guys after he worked so hard to overcome so much.

Well, Jax has the First Pick in the draft.. Perhaps Trevor Lawrence is the pick... Why would he want to go there.. it's just another short term fix.. JMO,,

What about NOLA? I wonder if Brees is hanging them up. The Giants perhaps? New England? I'm not convinced that Miami is satisfied with what they got...

There are a few choices out there that may make sense.

Honestly, I don't think Sheldon will be a problem.

The coaches know his value to the DL. I think Sheldon wants to be here.

So, Berry will make this work.

If Sheldon Richardson restructures his contract he’ll be on the Browns, if he doesn’t he’ll be cut. It seems pretty simple to me.

Why does he need to restructure his contract? He played well last year and it's not like we are desperate for cap space, plus he's a free agent after this season anyway.

What is the point of cutting Richardson if the 2nd significant signing ability you'd gain is someone to replace Richardson? Or do we really think that replacement is on the roster now?

It depends on what you think Richardson will be in 2021. I think he’ll restructure and stay.

Seahawks will release Carlos Dunlap

Word last month was that the Seahawks were likely to cut defensive end Carlos Dunlap before a $3 million roster bonus came due early in the new league year and that move will come on Monday.

PFT has confirmed multiple reports that Dunlap will be released. The move will clear over $14 million in salary cap space for Seattle.

Dunlap was acquired in a trade with the Bengals last season and had five sacks in eight games with the team. He reworked his contract to convert $3 million of 2020 salary into the bonus that he won’t be receiving.

The Seahawks traded a seventh-round pick and offensive lineman B.J. Finney for Dunlap. Finney was released by the Bengals last week.

Dunlap had six sacks overall last season and has 87.5 for his career. He’ll look to add to that total by catching on with a new team.

I don't care if he's a good guy, I don't think he can play football. It was almost painful to watch him on the Skins and whomever was on the Eagles when they were playing to not lose that game that would have almost qualified each team for the playoffs late in the year last year, on National TV. and neither quarterback looks like they can move an offense.
It was brutal, a real downer for the game,
I mean, if you watch an NFL game, you expect a certain quality of execution, it's not arena league, and two guys, who clearly can't get the job done as a nationaly televised game, well it just felt bad to watch, bad for the whole NFL.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

On topic but off a bit. Do we spend our last dollar this offseason banking on a much much higher cap next year? From a strategy perspective wouldn't we be best off getting EVERYTHING we want and need this year and try to figure out where we land next year when it comes. The prices are gong to be sale prices this year next year not so much IMO???????????????

With a few caveats, that's exactly how I feel.

The caveats being you still need to look ahead and make sure you aren't completely screwing yourself if the cap doesn't rebound, but definitely plan for taking the approach that this is a MASSIVE opportunity to cash in on a major shuffling of NFL talent.

It's a time to do a lot of shopping and find a LOT of creative ways to backload deals while still not totally screwing ourselves even when things rebound.

I think that there is a really solid chance of games being played normally this year, and that should allow for an almost full rebound to the cap in 2022. At the least, I expect games to allow at least 30-50% attendance in all markets. That alone will boost the cap considerably above where it is this year.

yeah I agree. I think the Dak deal kind of tips the hand of the new cap

I think it is a safe bet.

I think the big delay in the cap this year is the NFL is somehow hoping the TV deal can apply to this year, though it is probably to late since teams are cutting players right and left.

I think the Prescott deal is a clear sign that J Jones is confident on where the cap is headed moving forward. The owners have to have some inkling of understanding where the cap is headed.

This could be a golden year for the Browns since we do have money this year. I'd sign guys and wouldn't be looking for 1 year deals.

I wouldn't spend every dollar, but I would roll the dice a bit this year, knowing that everybody is going to have money next year. Even with a boat of carryover it's still going to even things out a bit meaning we will have to over spend to get players. Sign and lock some players this year and more or less start even with everybody else next year.

At some point we aren't going to have the most money if we are good and want to remain that way. This is the off season to sign or lock-up 4-5 players.

Start next year with a small amount of carry over

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
