It’s so weird to see a player become available, want the player on the Browns, and then realize “oh yeah we’re good now, we don’t need a player at every position.”

On topic but off a bit. Do we spend our last dollar this offseason banking on a much much higher cap next year? From a strategy perspective wouldn't we be best off getting EVERYTHING we want and need this year and try to figure out where we land next year when it comes. The prices are gong to be sale prices this year next year not so much IMO??????????????? I think it is a safe bet. I think the big delay in the cap this year is the NFL is somehow hoping the TV deal can apply to this year, though it is probably to late since teams are cutting players right and left. I think the Prescott deal is a clear sign that J Jones is confident on where the cap is headed moving forward. The owners have to have some inkling of understanding where the cap is headed. This could be a golden year for the Browns since we do have money this year. I'd sign guys and wouldn't be looking for 1 year deals. I wouldn't spend every dollar, but I would roll the dice a bit this year, knowing that everybody is going to have money next year. Even with a boat of carryover it's still going to even things out a bit meaning we will have to over spend to get players. Sign and lock some players this year and more or less start even with everybody else next year. At some point we aren't going to have the most money if we are good and want to remain that way. This is the off season to sign or lock-up 4-5 players. Start next year with a small amount of carry over I think you're right, though I would expect the big jump to happen in 2023 not next year. From what I understand, the cap number was supposed to be significantly lower this year than it is and they "borrowed" from next year. Based on this, I wouldn't expect a huge jump next year unless they renegotiate TV rights, league marketing, etc.. and get additional revenue. But, you're right, backloading should be more prevalent. As will 5 year deals with multiple years voidable (the Lavonte David deal) to spread cap hit across the max years, if the league allows this.

Seeing all of these cuts just after the cap has been announced tells me that almost NO ONE is safe. If a team can save even a decent amount of money by cutting you, be on high alert.

Didn't see the Riley Reiff cut coming. And yet they kept Anthony Barr? Odd.

We may not see some of these coming, but we don't know each teams situation. Teams have to weigh out if cutting one high priced player has more or less impact on the team over cutting 2, maybe 3 lesser priced players.
A GM with some input by the coaching staff has to balance it out based on who else they have on the roster. Also, seeing a bunch of higher priced guys hit the market makes the decision a little easier since you might be able to bring in adequate veteran replacement production at a lesser cost.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I get all that. I just think Barr is egregiously overpaid.

In addition to the cap savings, I wonder if the Chiefs anticipated a slow recovery or lingering issues from Schwartz's back surgery?

Well, when you look at how Mahomes was running for his life during the SB without either of them...

It would be puzzling if they were healthy. Hard to pay expensive players when it is questionable (doubtful?) if they'll be ready for the start of the season during a cap crunch.
They drafted Lucas Niang last year, but he opted out and should be back. He's probably penciled in at one OT spot. Not sure what they'll do on the other side. Yasir Durant, another rookie last year, might get a shot.
Maybe they are in talks with Riley Reiff and needed the money from cutting those two?

Is the consequence of paying Mahomes? Mahomes "only" counts $25M against the cap this year...not too bad for a QB. Next year, it is $31M, then $42M the year after that. More like the consequence of paying Frank Clark, Chris Jones, and Tyrann Mathieu.

We will definitely find out his durability next year. We will also see if he develops a skittish demeanor when running for his life every game. I think he will regress big time this season unless they find 2 above-average tackles. I like Baker because he played with a not amazing OL and rose up. Mahomes looked like pedestrian playing in the superbowl. 26-42, 286 YDS, 2 TD, 2 INT
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

Last year Baker played with a poor o-line. This year he played behind one of the better O-lines in football.

whoever manages the Saint's cap probably will never have a job in the NFL again. They are stripping to the studs. They'll have guys from the FCFL playing next year. But these guys they are cutting would be some good stop gaps for us on prove it deals
