You fill holes in the FA market so you have more options in the draft. It in no way dictates what position you will be drafting. Maybe but signing clowney makes the DE room a lot better now!!

I think this FO sees Clowney as more of a rotational player. I don't see his signing as a fix for the position and I think when comparing what he will get paid compared to other edge rushers in the league the money will show that to be the case.
I'm certainly not opposed to us drafting a CB. It would be a great addition. The thing is we don't know what we don't know. I think between six to eight million per year makes Clowney a contributor, not an answer.
My point is that I don't see the signing of Clowney precluding us from drafting an edge rusher in round one. Not that we will.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

It will be interesting to see the contract details for Clowney. Particularly the length of the deal. If its multi-year then obviouly there is somewhat less pressing need to sign DE early. I suspect it will be a one year deal.

You may be right, I think if Jaelen Phillips is available, yes, they will take him despite signing Clowney, I believe (JMO) that Phillips is heads above all the other Pass Rushers and we can grab one in rd. two if we grab a CB ...

I've come around to Phillips also. But I still got a man crush on Ronnie Perkins if Phillops is off the board and we take another position in round one.
There are a lot of ways to make this a successful draft. It's exciting!

To be clear if the right DE is available at 26, I'd still draft that player. If he is the best player on our board, no doubt. If a OG is the best player on the board, draft him.

I don’t think signing Clowney changes any long term plans. If you we were going to draft an edge before we still will now. It could if the drafting of the DE before was leaning towards need. If we don't need the player to make immediate impact, we could now sway away if better overall players are available.

I have a feeling that if the Browns don't sign Clowney, no one will because we have shown the most interest.

I have a feeling that if the Browns don't sign Clowney, no one will because we have shown the most interest. Or whomever inks him down the road, will more than likely get him at a reduced price. For like you stated, seems like the offer is high enough to keep Clowney back and forth to Cleveland.

In my humble opinion.
The meter on Clowney has gone from great expectations and over rated.
To underrated and now he is a bust.
The reality is. He has been a pretty good player when he has played. The problem has been staying healthy.
One should not make the mistake that he is not talented.
He is.
At 28 he is still viable. He could really surprise many and have a great year.
The Browns represent an ideal spot for him right now.
He will not have to be the Man. He can stay fresh in a rotation. He will not be doubled.
We must always remember no other team has Myles Garrett. He is a wreaking ball. Teams have to game plan Myles.
Clowney is fast enough and strong enough to beat most of the players he will face one on one.
I am optimistic about his impact if signed here.

Wonder who’s gonna be hurt more, Clowney or Vernon.

Done deal
Interesting to see the figures
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

NFL Update @MySportsUpdate · 13s #Browns and Jadeveon Clowney reached agreement on a 1-year deal worth somewhere in the $10M range, per @MaryKayCabot . Cleveland will now have bookend No. 1 overall picks at defensive end with Clowney and Garrett.

“Up to” is the key phrase. I want the real numbers. Sure, but ultimately being a one year deal means regardless of the cost it won’t hurt us going forward. We’ll come in under the 2021 cap and still have money to extend players going into 2022. I’m not going to get hung up on the numbers in this case. (Not that you are. But other’s surely will.)

I wouldn't trade Richardson for Clowney if that's what happens. If they can make it work with both then great but if it's a choice of one of the other no way what I have signed Clowney.

Now if we have to cut Richardson (insanity) to get Clowney, I’ll be upset. No way I see that happening.

It looks like we may take a bit off of Richardson.
The deal for Clowney isn’t bad. I don’t think it’s a home run. But 1 year deal for 8 million doesn’t strap us

There are a number of players we can restructure if we need to make space. It would be pure stupidity to cut Richardson; it's not happening.

I doubt Richardson will leave.
WOW.
This is a good signing. Stoked.
We have count them 10 first rounders:
Defense: Myles, Clowney, Ward, Mckinley, Richardson.
Offense: Baker, Odell, Conklin, Njoku, Wills.
I was in 11th grade in 64 when the Browns Won it all.
This will be the best Browns roster in my lifetime even before the draft.

Browns sign 3-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Jadeveon ClowneyFormer No. 1 overall pick gives the Browns another option off the edgeApr 14, 2021 at 01:04 PM Andrew Gribble Senior Staff Writer The Browns added more experience, depth and talent at the defensive end position with the signing of Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, comes to Cleveland after spending the 2020 season with the Tennessee Titans. The eight-year veteran joins Takkarist McKinley as the second major addition to the Browns' group of pass rushers since the start of the new league year. "We're excited to add Jadeveon to our defensive line," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. "He's a disruptive force that will help us against the run and the pass. We've been able to make some nice additions to our defense throughout free agency and we are looking forward to getting to work, so we can improve our team." Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, has racked up 32 sacks over seven seasons, though two of those years were significantly shortened by injuries. Clowney made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2016-18, a stretch in which he averaged more than eight sacks per season and delivered a combined 59 hits on the quarterback. Clowney also earned second-team All-Pro recognition in 2016, his first of four consecutive seasons in which he started in double-digit games. "Jadeveon's had a very productive career since 2014. We love his relentless style of play," Browns EVP of Football Operations and GM Andrew Berry said. "He's one of the more disruptive players in the game and we think he's going to add an element of ruggedness along our defensive line and will pair nicely with many of the guys we have on the roster already. The other thing we love about Jadeveon is his versatility, his ability to play all across the front and impact the game regardless of his alignment." Clowney spent his first five seasons with the Texans before joining the Seahawks via trade in 2019. He registered his first pick-six and posted the second-best defensive grade of his career (87.3), according to Pro Football Focus' rankings, over 13 games. This past season in Tennessee, Clowney appeared and started in eight games before his season was ended prematurely by a knee injury. Though he didn't collect a sack, Clowney brought consistent pressure — 69.6 pass rush grade from Pro Football Focus — knocked down four passes and posted six hits on the quarterback. "Jadeveon's play-to-play impact on the game, whether it's the run game as a rusher, lined up as a three-technique or lined up as an end, is something we really value," Berry said. "We think he'll really be beneficial for us in our defensive system." Clowney, a Rock Hill, S.C., native, was one of the highest-ranked recruits to ever play at the University of South Carolina. The two-time All-American and two-time first-team All-SEC selection is one of four DEs to be selected with the No. 1 pick since 2000. https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/browns-sign-3-time-pro-bowl-pass-rusher-jadeveon-clowney

Only the Top 51 salaries will count. Most of the rookies, even with signing bonuses, will slide in under that. The ones that go over will only add the difference in relation to the salary they knock off the list. Besides that, doing a new contract with Njoku can get a lot of room, and Bitonio, Tretter, Landry, and Richardson are all great candidates for a restructure. We are 1000% ALL-IN on winning it all this year, though. Sheldon is in his last year and we have a ton of guys on one year deals ahead of the big deals hitting for Baker, Ward, etc... we have more guys on 1-year deals or in their last year than we can Draft replacements for.

I like the signing. Reasonable deal financially with potentially great upside.
Richardson should not necessarily be the primary target of restructuring. I'd consider OBJ and Landry as options as well.

He is 28. A three time pro bowl player. Former first pick in the draft.
This guy is no slacker. We will have the best pass rush in the game with our defensive front.
Clowney will not have to play every down. We will be able to keep him fresh with the rotation we will use.
We should not discount Takk Mckinley. This guy can rush the passer. He was a first round pick. He has talent.
This roster will be hard to crack.
We took KC to the limit. We have improved areas of need more than any other team. Free Agency. Are you kidding me. JJ3 huge add. Troy Hill upgrades CB. Anthony Walker solid pro upgrades linebacker position group. Takk Mckinley young former first rounder. He can rush the passer and he is highly motivated. Clowney. This deal is all about him producing for us. He will help the run defense big time. We will be hard to game plan against.
Front line pressure. Back end play makers.
Apply quarterback pressure and have ball hawks.
JOK would be a prime fit. He can cover TE, RB's, and wideouts. He can blitz off the edge. Unreal closing speed.
Damn we are loaded. The draft is gravy.

Are Takk McKinley and Jadeveon Clowney better than Olivier Vernon and Adrian Clayborn? Vernon was pretty good for us last year. I think the upside of our current is way greater.

I don't know if that is factually correct. It's 8 million until any conditions have been met. And all but the top three round selections will be under the top 51.

Absolutely, they're better, just as Malik Jackson is better than Ogunjobi and Billings is better than whomever our #2 DT behind Ogun was. That said, this is on "on paper". We can't say for sure they're better until they do it. These guys still have to show up.

Clowney can play like a Polamalulu type only more physical. Hope he catches fire here. Welcome to the Browns! Earn your keep. Win us some games. The Elf Lords command it!
