I'm not worried about the cap it always seems to work out, so lets win now and hope the Pandemic is over by next year and the cap will zoom up whwere we can keep all of our stars ...

This is the best roster the Cleveland Browns have ever had.

We need to beat the Rats and the Chefs and we are Super Bowl bound in 2021!

I was interested to read Berry's comments about lining up Clowney as a 3-tech, and imagining him and Garrett running some kind of evil twist or stunt. That's the kind of stuff that keeps opposing O-coordinators awake at night. I like it.

If we do, in fact, have to do some cap maneuvering, I would hope that we would look at least a couple different directions before we looked at Richardson. Dude made a case for being our best Dlineman with Garrett's injury and lingering illness.

Restructuring a vet to give them more money over longer term as a trade for short-term cap relief would be excellent.

No doubt a upgrade.

Woods will be able to do so many different things with this defense.

Mix coverages. Shoot different guys from different places. We can go nickle and dime.

Versatility to the max.

Anyone know what effect "incentives" have on salary cap?

Damn.

I have waited my whole life to be in this position with the Browns.

Coach of the year. No covid camp. Odell and Baker know the system and we will see the chemistry we have been waiting for.

The upgrades to the defense - massive.

Best OL.
Best running duo.
IMO best pass rush.

If I could I would pitch a tent in Berea and watch every practice.

If you have been a Browns fan and you are not jacked. You have no pulse.

I believe if they are not likely to be earned they get applied next year. Likely to be earned this year

Former No. 1 overall pick gives the Browns another option off the edge

Senior Staff Writer

The Browns added more experience, depth and talent at the defensive end position with the signing of Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, comes to Cleveland after spending the 2020 season with the Tennessee Titans. The eight-year veteran joins Takkarist McKinley as the second major addition to the Browns' group of pass rushers since the start of the new league year.

"We're excited to add Jadeveon to our defensive line," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. "He's a disruptive force that will help us against the run and the pass. We've been able to make some nice additions to our defense throughout free agency and we are looking forward to getting to work, so we can improve our team."

Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, has racked up 32 sacks over seven seasons, though two of those years were significantly shortened by injuries. Clowney made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2016-18, a stretch in which he averaged more than eight sacks per season and delivered a combined 59 hits on the quarterback. Clowney also earned second-team All-Pro recognition in 2016, his first of four consecutive seasons in which he started in double-digit games.

"Jadeveon's had a very productive career since 2014. We love his relentless style of play," Browns EVP of Football Operations and GM Andrew Berry said. "He's one of the more disruptive players in the game and we think he's going to add an element of ruggedness along our defensive line and will pair nicely with many of the guys we have on the roster already. The other thing we love about Jadeveon is his versatility, his ability to play all across the front and impact the game regardless of his alignment."

Clowney spent his first five seasons with the Texans before joining the Seahawks via trade in 2019. He registered his first pick-six and posted the second-best defensive grade of his career (87.3), according to Pro Football Focus' rankings, over 13 games.

This past season in Tennessee, Clowney appeared and started in eight games before his season was ended prematurely by a knee injury. Though he didn't collect a sack, Clowney brought consistent pressure — 69.6 pass rush grade from Pro Football Focus — knocked down four passes and posted six hits on the quarterback.

"Jadeveon's play-to-play impact on the game, whether it's the run game as a rusher, lined up as a three-technique or lined up as an end, is something we really value," Berry said. "We think he'll really be beneficial for us in our defensive system."

Clowney, a Rock Hill, S.C., native, was one of the highest-ranked recruits to ever play at the University of South Carolina. The two-time All-American and two-time first-team All-SEC selection is one of four DEs to be selected with the No. 1 pick since 2000.

Cool, thanks.

So it seems that likelihood is based on previous season's performance.

Pretty safe to assume anything based on sacks is "non likely to be earned" since he had zero last year. In that case, if the goal is reached, the incentive bonus will be pushed to next year's cap.

It depends on the incentives. The league looks at them as likely to me met, or questionable. If they are likely to be met, the whole deal will count.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I don't think the "best" passrush, but we should at least be top 1/3.

From what I've read, there is no "questionable"... If the incentive would not have been earned in the previous season, it is NLTBE, cut and dried.

If it's true that likely vs not likely to be met is entirely based on the previous seasons stats, then I think it's safe to assume incentives would lean heavily towards not likely to be met.

I hope he has a million in per game roster bonuses, lol. Since he was injured 8 games last year, half (8/16) of any per game bonus is "unlikely to be earned."

TBD.

We have not seen this combination of talent along the front.

DE - Myles, Clowney, Takk, all first rounders along with Porter and Curtis Weaver who is considered a very good pass rusher.

DT - Sheldon a first rounder, Billings a starter with the Bengals, Malik Jackson who can rush, Elliott who was drafted by Berry and showed he could play.

We have to see what this will look like on the field. But I expect them to be a serious problem for any offense.

Plus we still have the draft.

This is the best the Browns have had since the return. But not all time. Those 1950's teams were legendary. They were always in the mix to win the championship.

If the Run defense can equal last years, if the Db's can all come in healthy, and live off of the interceptions.

If Some reason OBJ returns and catches magic, with Baker for some reason.

All I'm sayin, If they catch on fire at the same time and their 6 best games in a row stretch to the exact right time to peak,

If they can get the tight ends to be as good as last year, It could be an unstoppable team that wins the Super bowl.

If Mayfeld and the offense can get in sync. At the right time, for the final 6 games, Unstoppable
Super Bowl.

In fact, as good as last year was, (3 wins away), many of the stars were banged up for several games last year.

Oh well, we'll see, I'm conditioned to expect the letdown.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I think a month or so ago we were considered one of a handful of teams likely to do pretty well next year. I think now it’s pretty much a lock in many minds that we’re either expected to do quite well or we’re going to be that loaded team that whiffs every few years. Either way, we’re not sneaking up on anyone this year.

He was a rookie. He only spot played.

They liked him enough to draft him and he is in the plans to play this year.

this is how i feel.... still hope we pick the best DE or CB in the first round... I hope Clowny at least stays healthy...

i'm cautiously optimistic... Clowney at his best can be dominate... I just don't think we've see his best for awhile and even in his best years I felt like he could have been more...

if he's healthy then he upgrades the defense from what we had...

Our D has a ton of guys stuck with the "if he can stay healthy" disclaimer. Quality depth is the ONLY insurance for that.

Keep stacking this roster.

One thing with Clowney, he has been consistently double teamed. That should end with Garrett on the other side. I was never really high on Clowney, but the potential of our Dline is awesome. I hope the first Pittsburgh game, he and Myles meet at Ben for a crushing introduction.

Andrew Berry free agency.

S Johnson Johnson, CB Troy Hill, DT Malik Jackson,
DE Takk McKinley, DE Jadeveon Clowney, LB Anthony Walker.

Starting or in a rotation. All upgrades along with the return of Greedy and Delpit.

Last year we did the offense.

Grade A.

Good interview. When asked what the process was over the last few weeks and what brought him back here, he responds with an unequivocal two word answer... "Andrew Berry".

I don't ever remember so many players talking so highly of a GM in Cleveland.

So, he's added two beasts to the DL. The other one because he sent him the message five times last year that he wanted him here. I remember thinking "Why do we keep claiming him when we know he's gonna fail the physical?" This cat is two steps ahead of everyone else. grin

stats that may make big ben retire:

Over the past three seasons, Clowney has ranked fifth in the NFL with a pass rush win rate of 25%, according to ESPN Stats & Information. During that span, Garrett ranks third, at 26%.

"The other thing we love about Jadeveon is his versatility, his ability to play all across the front and impact the game regardless of his alignment."

McKinley struggled with injuries last season but ranked seventh in pass rush win rate in 2018, one spot behind Clowney and four behind Garrett that season.

I see all 3 of them on the field in obvious passing situations paired with Richardson.

LOL!

for the Texans he was doubled when JJ was hurt... when JJ was healthy typically he drew the double...

Clowney likely not drawing a ton of doubles SHOULD help his stats....
