I’m kind of shocked by this. My guess is that they asked for a restructure and he said no.

That was my speculation as well. I figured we were going to ask him to restructure the way things were going, but I didn't see it as absolutely necessary the way the Clowney signing broke out.

this is a dumb move. I'd take what richardson brings over clowney any day.

He'll be back at a cheaper price, if not DT could be the pick at #26 (Barmore) ...

This is what I'm thinking too. The dude was making over $12M.

Even if the FO has the money and the cap space is available, that is irrelevant. Available space doesn't matter...value does. I'm good with that as an overall approach.

I wish a renegotiation was the end result, however. This is a hole to fill now.

Same here. Hell, I'd even put him at DE over Clowney.

Ya! What the Washington Football Team!

Once we find out Malik Jackson, (now because of murphys law),
won't be able to play 3 snaps all year,

We're screwed Jordan Ellott's the starting DT.

Dude, is your hair constantly on fire in all areas of your life?! I don't like this move either but the season isn't doomed because of it. These kinds of hard financial decisions will become more frequent as the number of foundational players coming up for their 2nd contracts increaases.

Signed Clowney for 8 mil with a 3.8 mill cap hit this year, saved 12 mil this year releasing Richardson, so frees up 8 mil this year. This money could be used for a long term signing or even another FA DE (the best of what's left), remembering we still have vet cuts, trades, and a draft that could all result in more cap casualties where bargains can be had.

Absolutely dumb.

This is a surprise. I knew he would gone after this year but I did not see this coming.

So, that changes things. Billings will start along with Malik. Elliott will rotate.

They will draft a tackle.

I am fan of Sheldon's. A real pro. Always gave great effort. Shame really.

I'm shocked. But will wait till the end of the off season to judge.

I thought Richardson has been one of the most reliable and consistent performers since he arrived.

Although this is a bitter pill to swallow. I have trust in Berry.

He is a strategic planner.

My hope is at the end of this season this move will have no real impact.

I'm shocked people are shocked at this move. Really, I am.

I would have preferred a restructure to keep him but there is no way this guy was worth $12M this year.

Sorry.

I didn't like this either, but the sky isn't falling, our D needed help, we all knew that and they have done a pretty good job doing that up to now. Maybe they will resign him at a cheaper price, he isn't going to get $10-12 mil on the open market, the Raiders cut Maurice Hurst, Maybe we have our eye on him, I liked Richardson, but the sky isn't falling.

I agree with this. There is no way he makes $12 million a year (or even guaranteed) on the open market. I am shocked because I thought he would restructure. The restructure number probably just came in lower than what he thinks he can get as a free agent.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see a veteran signing at a low cap number after the draft.

Haha. I was thinking the same thing, but you'd think they would have waited until either the waiver claim passed or after the draft.

The move isn't the surprise. The timing is, though.

Does being waived make the player a street-free agent?

Barry impresses me as a GM that will have contingencies. So we will see.

I would also make this hard decision to facilitate the resigning of Mayfield, Chubb and Ward.

Obviously Berry doesn't feel that way.

Let's wait for the smoke to clear before we jump off a bridge, so to speak. We may already have a offer for him. We may have designs on drafting a DT. We may just feel that Richardson is done.

I know we have a plan. Let's face it, as you get better, cutting players who are good is a part of the process, especially if you are trying to clear some dollars. It's been a while since we have had to clear dollars.

If a player is on his rookie contract then he goes through waivers. Rookie contracts are four years long. Hurst is going into his fourth season. He’ll go on waivers and every team will have a chance to claim him. The waiver order is the same as the draft order. I don’t like our chances at getting him.

I don't know if one move is the reason for possibly executing others. It could simply be they don't want to pay him $12M.

Actually the Jackson signing is more of a Richardson replacement. Clowney is a Vernon replacement.

The addition of Clowney reinforces the Richardson cutting because he can move inside if necessary. I think we would have liked to have kept Richardson had he agreed to a renegotiated contract, but that is just speculation at this point. Maybe we just felt we could do without him.

I loved Sheldon but this is a cruel bottom line business.

He was not worth 12 million. Period.

I'm all in on Barmore now.

This might give us the money to sign Mayfield and or Chubb/Ward long term.

Exactly.

Building a team is like building a puzzle, and fans sometimes try to build the puzzle without having all the pieces.

I think Berry, Depo, and Stefanski know what they are doing. I think they have proven that enough to just wait to see how it all plays out.

Doh! He was overpaid but he was a pretty good player that played every game. This being his last year it bothers me to see a move like this. Hope they have a reason other than saving money. The Ravens could use some help on the D line.

Although an explanation of how they came to this decision would be satisfying I'm more interested in a solution to the IDL rotation. How exactly are they going to distribute reps?
Do they have enough players currently for the distribution they intend? Personally, I don't need it explained to me I need the roster to be composed in a way that addresses depth and production.

This is a horrendous move. first bad one by berry. He will probably regret it. Releasing him does not make us a better team. Especially since there is no one available as good as him.

Resigning bake, ward or chubb this early is foolish to lose a player of Richardson's caliber.

Blocking those who argue to argue, eliminates the argument.
