So far that's exactly what the Republicans are trying to do. Your post is a prime example of it. The party of personal responsibility is trying to hide their responsibility.

Yeah, those are all good points. I think that has all gotten buried in the minds and memories of people as we chronologically move away from the event.

That move by McConnell was a Hail Mary. He's very smart politically. You have to give that to him. He was trying to hold on to the Trump wing by voting against conviction while also trying to hold on to the moderates by excoriating Trump afterward.

He swung for the fences by trying to hold on to Republicans as a whole, rather than throwing his weight behind one faction. It ultimately didn't work because Trump is more of a blunt force instrument who either didn't see what Mitch was trying to do, or just didn't care.

35 house Republicans voting in favor of the commission is significant.

It not only shows there’s still some sanity left amongst the GOP, but also highlighted a very real divide. We’ve already had republicans on that very list imply that there’s far more republicans who didn’t support the riot, but are defending Trump simply because they’re trying to cover their own ass.

Sadly the point is bigger than most wish to recognize. There was actually a negotiation between both parties to arrive at an agreement on how this investigation would move forward. A non partisan agreement. Then we see the Republicans voting against the very same investigation their own party negotiated for.

They wanted to muddy the waters by adding in a lot of other incidents that had nothing to do with January 6th and when the negotiations didn't include that, they balked.

This is nothing more than a legal means to pull off a cover up.

While it's far less than the # that voted against the commission, 35 is a pretty significant number. I imagine that's going to keep McConnell up at night... a silver lining, I guess.

I honestly don't think he cares. I'll be interested to see if the Senate can get up to 60 (that's what they need right?).

no, that ship has not sailed.... Not even close

As far as January 6th goes, what other options do you have to hold Trump accountable?

Yes. To those with eyes, ears, and a conscious.
Seems there’s some short of one or more of these things.

I think they have eyes but they want other rioters like what we all saw last summer taken to task also. Fair is fair. I believe both rioters were in the wrong and should be held accountable. But, I understand the Republicans saying if you take a blind eye to what happened last summer then do not expect me to point out Jan 6 as a problem. A riot is wrong no matter what. Both sides.

14,000+ people were arrested last year during riots. I’m fine with that. I don’t think you’ll find a liberal on this board that has a problem with these arrests.
Now these seditious losers from Jan 6th need to be dragged through court.

I have no problem with both getting investigated. But they were 2 very separate incidences and as such should be 2 separate investigations.

The republicans don't want that. They want to combine the 2 to muck up the investigation into Jan 6. They want the scope of the investigation so broad that it becomes unwieldy and unlikely to produce significant result. But then if it does, they can twist things to change the focus of what their crowned prince did that he shouldn't have, and what he didn't that he should have.

Then open a commission to investigate that. Stop trying to use it as a method to obstruct a commission on Jan. 6th. There was an attempt to overthrow the results of an election that was even certified in Republican run states by Republicans. Let's stop trying to compare that as being the same thing as what happened over the summer. Civil disobedience and riots have a history in this country. Trying to overthrow a presidential election does not.

I know you can see the difference even if you refuse to admit it.

You had no problem with investigation after investigation of Hillary's emails and Benghazi. She was even investigated again AFTER Trump took office.

Yet here the very fiber of our nation, the peaceful transfer of power was threatened and you say, "Yeah, but this other thing too!" It doesn't make any sense and America is watching.

Your party keeps trying to destroy itself. Meanwhile I'm sitting on the sideline eating popcorn.

To me what happened last summer was far worse. Innocent people were impacted, traumatized, terrorized. The Capital could take care of their selves. I do not worry about the government taking care of their problems. Actually, I would prefer them to stay out of my business all together. I care about people. People that was rendered defenseless against mobs. That was far worse. So AOC had a few nightmares after Jan 6. She at least did not lose her business. Her life savings.

I would be fine if there were two separate investigations, but I don't think it would be good to commingle them.

Not happy living in our American democracy? No one is forcing you to stay in the USA..you have options.

Find yourself a dictator that you will be happy with...and leave our American Democracy for a better life in Russia or Turkey or maybe you would prefer the little guy from North Korea.

Not me. If you helped try to overthrow the peaceful transfer of power on January 6th, they should send you to prison. If you promote that Trump won the election after all of the evidence to the contrary, never speak about your "American values" again. Never claim to stand for the constitution again. You can't just cite the second amendment while trashing the rest of the document.

And just to be clear here, I didn't mean you as a person. I meant the collective you. I don't attribute those things or beliefs towards you as a person.

Authorities Seize $90,000 from 'Journalist' Paid by CNN, Allege He Actually Encouraged and Emboldened Rioters

Isa Cox

May 23, 2021

A man who painted himself as an innocent, independent journalist when he captured the most violent scenes amid the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol Building has been hit with additional charges and seen $90,000 in assets seized for selling his footage to media outlets.

John Earle Sullivan claimed to have entered the Capitol with the intention of recording the rioters, yet quickly gained notoriety in the days that followed for his history of far-left, anti-police activism that included charges of rioting, threats of violence, and criminal mischief in his home state of Utah.

According to the original criminal affidavit when he was first arrested in January on charges of unlawful entry, disorderly conduct, and attempted obstruction of law enforcement, Sullivan began the day on Jan. 6 with the apparent intention of burning down the Capitol Building and ripping then-President Donald Trump out of office (or something to that effect).

From the ABOUT page of your source:

The site was established to provide an alternative for readers fed up with the overt leftism of establishment media outlets.

His wikipedia page says he's been involved with a few groups on the left and now the right wing insurrectionists on January 6th. Sounds like another Andy Ngo type guy trying to get the worst of politics/people on camera so he can profit from the shots. Screw him, let him hang.

That a few Senators and congressmen aided and abetted insurrection Jan 6th and the days leading up to it.

There is a video out there that shows Mitt walking in the hallway that day.. he walked out of camera range then you see him going the other way followed by Cap Police telling him to get going...

He's not likely to take that easily.. He's not an idiot. He's what the Republican party used to be before Trump.

Mitt needs to step up and be the leader he once was thought to be. He needs to turn enough republicans around....

Not sure he can. Mitch has a lot of control of the mindless over there.
