What's this—a Browns offense worth watching?
By Greg Cosell - SportingNews

Each week, one of the offenses I most enjoy watching is Cleveland's.

When I break down film, I rarely get caught up in statistics. Yet one jumps out: The Browns have scored touchdowns on more than 25 percent of their offensive possessions. Through six weeks, only three teams were better -- New England, Indianapolis and Dallas.

The film shows why. The Browns use a number of different formations and personnel groupings, plus a lot of shifting and motion, in their passing game. That tells me coordinator Rob Chudzinski is constantly looking to create and dictate favorable matchups for his players.

The most important chess piece on Chudzinski's board is tight end Kellen Winslow. Of Winslow's 29 receptions this season, 25 have come when he was aligned not in the conventional spot by a tackle but outside the formation. And 10 of those 25 catches, including both of his touchdowns, occurred when he was the only receiver split to his side of the formation. If you saw Winslow beat Bengals cornerback Johnathan Joseph for a touchdown in Week 2, then you saw his wide receiver skills that allow Chudzinski to attack and exploit any coverage scheme.

Braylon Edwards, with his combination of size (6-3, 215) and body control, also presents matchup problems for corners. Again, it is how he is utilized that stands out. Edwards is primarily the X receiver, which means he lines up on the weak side of the formation. He often is used in 3x1 sets -- three receivers to one side, with Edwards the single receiver to the other side . This puts him in man-to-man coverage situations on the outside. Eight of Edwards' 11 catches of 20-plus yards have come with him aligned like that.

Quarterback Derek Anderson has been strong in his five starts. Working behind a much improved line, Anderson has, for the most part, been decisive with his reads and consistently accurate. He's a big (6-6, 230), strong-armed pocket passer who throws the ball better than Brady Quinn.

In addition, Chudzinski has shown a commitment to running the ball. Though the results have been so-so, he clearly understands the offense must remain balanced with a quarterback who can't improvise outside the pocket.

There certainly has been some inconsistency in execution, but overall, the Browns' offense is diverse -- and effective.

Chud has blown me away with what he has done with this offense. The crossing route to Edwards that was dropped was a brilliant play call. Play action fake with 8 in the box and that left edwards with 1 guy to beat and he had Winslow out there to take care of that DB. Seriously, his design is amazing to wach for anyone that enjoys the x's and o's stuff.

I like how Chud has designed plays, lining BE & Winslow on the same side only to throw back to JJ or Cribs....Next series same formation...We run the ball, next series same formation we throw to one of those guys, Defence never knows were the play is designed for, were making them defend the whole field, not just a part.

He has taken his offence and said here the plays guys, I trust ya 100% you can exicute it, no matter what the down or field postion, your a pro this is what your getting paid to do, it works now do it....confidence in the players shows on the field.

Player makes a mistake it's forgotten and we go right back to them or righht back to attacking the D.

we never stop attacking no matter what the score, field postion, down ect...We attack, and that dosent give the D any time to react or rest.

Just think, this is just the first year of this system, players are still learning it, we can only get better.

we need to secure Chud as our OC / Assistant Head coach for years to come, Teams are gonna be asking about him if thier not already.

The Browns have scored 22 TDs (4th NFL) with 17 TD passes (2nd NFL)
we have: 4.6 yards per rush (5th NFL); 7.2 per passing play(4th) and 6.06 per play (3rd). These numbers are significant since they show averages over half the season against our tougher opponents.

THese are big numbers and show why we are scoring. We are a passing team 84 to 42 first downs are by passing vs running.

We have been winning without using half of our offense. Our second best weapon is Lewis and the Oline and we haven't used him since Cinn. You say 4.6 yards a play..not so great but our opponents are gaining 4.7 against our poor run defense. Last year we had trouble getting 3.4 yards per rush.

We are 14th in rushing TDs , 16th in rushing yards and 25th in rushing plays showing that we neglect half of our offense. We are not always behind in fact we have been protecting a lead in most of the second half. We have a rested Lewis and should use him more along with Wright and Harrison.

nothing wrong with this thread.

and nothing wrong with being a pass first team. Just look at the Patriots.
We need to pass to set up the run. The reason our rushing average is so good is because teams have to play us to pass. If they played us to run, we wouldn't be so good in the run.

This year we have an OL that can pass protect pretty well. We've never had that before so teams didn't have to play us to pass. They just put a bunch of guys on the LOS and figured - if they pass, we'll sack the QB before the receivers even get into their routes.

I love what we're doing. And as the Rams game showed, if we get down we can pass ourselves back into it. You're not going to be able to run yourself back into a game when you get down by a lot of points.

We can run enough to keep teams honest and we pass well enough so that they can't stack the line.

...another thought.

We potentially screwed up some drives against the Rams. We had a TD drive that was over 100 yards long. We had 3rd and 17...1st and 20...you name it. You're not going to convert many 1st and 20's by running the ball (unless you're playing our D...and we don't play our D on Sundays).

Yes, it's important to run. It's nice to be able to run. But this thing about 'running out the clock' at the end of games...How many teams can really do that? When the opponent knows that you're going to run, it's very hard to do it. Trying to run the clock out strictly with handoffs usually leads to a punt. And I love the way we don't try and do that. We play to win the game! And I'll praise Chud for that forever.

Yeah, our running game for some reason has become better lately. But I will say it is defnitely not something we can count on. If our passing game is ineffective, i don't think our running backs will move the ball much. Last two games, we've played some bad running defenses. Our guys have also been on fire lately, but I'm definitely not counting on them or what happens if Braylon Edwards or KW2 gets injured.

Those guys both should be in the pro-bowl. Kellen hasn't had the same amount of opportunities this year (i'm sure his reception count must be down, but he's gotten more yards and TDs) and BEazy is playing like he is one of the best, that's for sure.

Awesome numbers, but one I don't like is TOP, Us 27:04 they 32:55. I would really like to see us leading our opponents in this. Not by running at the end of games, but mid game clock control. A few more draw plays thrown in would probably help get that number in our favor. If our offense is on the field longer, the defense has less time to give away points.

Kellen hasn't had the same amount of opportunities this year

Y'know- this is the second mention of this fact in this thread. It's been apparent to me, too. My guess is that K2's touches are down this year because:

Charlie isn't playing for us any more... so he's not automatically scrambling as soon as he gets the snap. DA is actually playing the game plan, so there is less need to dump to K2 as an outlet.

OL is giving good pass protection, allowing DA to set up and fire the planned play.

DA gets rid of the ball quicker- (see ex. 1)

Chud's Oscheme involves everyone now, so other receivers are getting open. JJ loks good... did you see how much space was around Carter when he did his Braylon "catch & roll for 6" imitation a couple weeks ago? Guys that open is a beautiful thang...)

There are lots of reasons why K2 has fewer looks this year... and since the team's winning, I'm reasonably sure it's OK with him.

Considering what he just had in that game Clem, I think he's quite happy

He's on pace for 84 catches and 1300 yards. Of course he won't be able to keep that yardage total up, but he's on his way to the pro-bowl, assuming his body doesn't break down before then. He was getting hammered out there. They all were.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.
