A black equal rights activist was shot by a group of four men at a party in south London on Sunday morning, police have said.

Sasha Johnson, 27, remains in critical condition in hospital after she was shot in the head, but police believe that she was not the intended target of the shooting.

Met Police Commander Alison Heydari appealed to the public for information on the shooting, saying "four black males in dark clothing" fired a gun during a party in Peckham.

"From our enquiries so far, we have established that Sasha had been at a party at a house on Consort Road in Peckham early on Sunday morning," Cdr Heydari said.

"Around 3am a group of four black males dressed in dark coloured clothing entered the garden of the property and discharged a firearm.

"We are aware of Sasha's involvement in the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK and I understand the concern this will cause to some communities - however, I wish to stress that at this time there is nothing to suggest Sasha was the victim of a targeted attack.

"We are also not aware of any reports of threats made against her prior to this incident."

Ms Johnson, a mother of three, is one of the leaders of the Taking The Initiative Party (TTIP).

Following the police statement, the political party said: "The irony is the fact that the police have stated that there is no clear evidence that Sasha was the target of the attack and that there are no credible death threats made towards her.


"However, how have the police come to this conclusion without being able to speak with Sasha regarding the death threats and investigate?

"Surely, to end up in hospital having sustained a bullet shot to the head makes a death threat more credible."

Charles Gordon, one of the party's founding members said: "We are deeply concerned about the attack on our sister.

"She is a pillar of our community. We have had calls from various activists and leaders within the community, worried about whether the next attack could be on them."

Ms Johnson is a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement and is described as "a strong, powerful voice for our people and our community" by TTIP.

She came to prominence last year after playing a leading role in anti-racism protests, organising the Million People March in August.


Black Lives Matter UK called Ms Johnson "a fearless political campaigner" and said she was "at the forefront of many BLM protests last summer", which were sparked following the murder of George Floyd.

On Monday, a group gathered around the bandstand in Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill, to hold a vigil for Ms Johnson close to the hospital where she is being treated.

seeing as i'm currently baked as hell and in a great mood for conversation, can anybody on the "opposing" side explain to me why do we lump violence with BLM?

If someone is about breast cancer, do you guys get on the FB page or forum or anything of the sort and go "what about heart disease?" do you guys go on those pages and start posting about other diseases and viruses as a underhand shot to whatever movement you're against?

this incident is crappy, and i hope whoever was involved is thoroughly dealt with.

First let me express that I pray this person makes a full recovery and the guilty person that shot this woman is held accountable.

The reason we see BLM is violent is we have eyes. We all saw the riots. We hear the chants to fry pigs like bacon. The whole organization is based on hate. It even threw it's support to a terrorist organization Hamas. There are many many examples I will not name them all.

Angry black people make them poop in their pants. I mean they all do that any way, they just don't like being made to do it bro.

FACT 1: Most of the bad things during the peaceful BLM protest that happened across the country, that you call 'riots', were not riots. There were riots amongst the PROTESTS, but most people participating were not violent in way.

FACT 2: Much of the violence was either perpetrated by or initiated by right wing hate groups infiltrating the protest and lighting matches in that tinderbox. These were planned to insight the riots and it mostly worked. Now I'll give you there were plenty of bad actors from the left participating and many not affiliated with anyone politically. However BLM and their cause, as well as the lives taken by the police murders, have little to nothing to do with CAUSING those riots. And I don't hear anyone on the right condemning the boogaloos (sp?), a white supremacy hate group whose member that was first identified as umbrella man actually got caught trashing an auto parts store and setting it on fire. It was then that we started hearing about a lot of this going on in the real world... But you probably didn't hear that on Faux News or Stormfront.

The excuses are hysterical. Please keep them coming.

The fact is that most of the daily BLM riots were caused by BLM and Antifa. They repeatedly rioted, looted, vandalised, and cause arson in their own streets. They destroyed many local businesses and caused many millions of dollars of damages.

It doesn't surprise me that the radical left is trying to blame it on someone else. Even BLM leaders said they need to loot as "reparations" and "it's no big deal because business owners have insurance."

So, all you have is insults and not facts. Typical.

You get your news from a radical socialist youtube channel. I get my news from mainstream media. One of us needs to shut up and it's not me.

Can you show any proof that the majority of those involved in the summer riots were members or associated with BLM? I'm just curious because over 90% of the summer protests were actually peaceful and I've seen zero evidence that the riots weren't being conducted by criminal opportunists.

It's not like they were wearing BLM shirts or hats so you knew who they were.

Criminals often times look for an opening to commit crimes. A chink in the armor. Usually in those cases the only one they are associated with are themselves.

You are falling into the trap. It's been done ever since the riots took place. I personally won't go there.

1. It falsely equating Jan 6th to the riots. I've explained why they are different and - note - no-one wanted to respond to those points. Shocker.

2. By talking about it it deflects the conversation away from Jan 6th events.

3. As you intimated - those rioting, looting and vandalizing were most notably not part of the peaceful protesting. They were opportunistic thugs.

4. Unlike our resident Trump supporters, virtually every poster on the board that expressed anti-Trump views - said the same thing about the rioters and looters: Arrest them and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. The same doesn't seem to hold true for Trump supporters and the events of Jan 6th.

We certainly don't see it the same way. To an extent we do. Both the summer riots and Jan.6th were terrible events and criminal activity was involved. I think both deserve attention. I don't blame people who want to get to the bottom of it. This we may disagree on.

Where I think we agree is that the two are separate issues and separate events that should be investigated separately. I think we agree that trying to overthrow our elections and install a dictator as president, which is exactly what Trump would have been if installed president by overthrowing our election, is a treasonous act that we haven't seen since the Civil War.

So there is no comparison whatsoever between the two other than the fact that there were crimes committed during both events.

We probably agree on all of it.

I have zero problem with the riots and the Antifa events being fully investigated. Why they happened, root cause, who was responsible and whether it was mostly organized or mostly opportunistic criminals. I'd also like to know what action or inaction by cities and law enforcement worked and what didn't work and made the situations worse - and it may be that the results of this vary by geography. But I think by investigating we cab better prepare for a better response the next time something like this happens.

What I won't do it discuss Jan 6th and on the same topic / thread / discussion, get drawn into the discussion about the riots. That's the whole point of my thread above, and it spells out why.

A man has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of activist Sasha Johnson.

Cameron Deriggs, 18, of Lewisham, has been charged with conspiracy to murder.

Ms Johnson, 27, was shot in Southwark, London, on Sunday 23 May and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

She is an Oxford graduate and has two children

Earlier this week, the Metropolitan Police said they had arrested five men in connection with the incident, with the other four now bailed until later in June.

Organizer cuts off veteran's mic when he discusses role Black people played in origins of Memorial Day

The audio was cut on a veteran’s microphone at a Memorial Day event in Hudson, Ohio, shortly after he began discussing the role Black people played in the holiday’s origins in an incident that local media report was no accident.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the incident occurred during an event marking the holiday at a local cemetery on Monday, just minutes after retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter started to deliver remarks.

During his speech, Kemter, whom the Journal reported was the keynote speaker for the event, discussed the history of the holiday, including the discovery of newspaper clippings and handwritten notes that showed a group of freed Black people were among the first to commemorate the holiday following the surrender of the Confederacy.

“In recent years, the origins of how and where 'Decoration Day' began has sparked lively debate amongst historians. However, Yale historian David Blight, asserting the holiday is rooted in a moving ceremony, [said it] was conducted by freed slaves on May 1, 1865, at the tattered remains of a Confederate prisoner of war camp,” he stated. “It was a Charleston Washington Race Course and Jockey Club today known as Hampton Park.”

“The ceremony is believed to have included a parade of as many as 10,000 people, including 3,000 African American schoolchildren singing the Union marching song, ‘John Brown's Body,’ ” he said. “They were carrying armfuls of flowers and went to decorate at the graves.”

But about a minute after, Kemter’s microphone was cut roughly halfway through his address. The veteran could be seen trying to alert someone off-camera about his microphone after realizing something was wrong, continuing to address the audience.

According to the Journal, an organizer for the event confirmed to the outlet that either she or another organizer had the audio cut.

The organizer, Cindy Suchan, told the paper that the portion of Kemter’s speech in which the audio was cut “was not relevant to our program for the day” and that the “theme of the day was honoring Hudson veterans.”

Suchan, whom the paper reported also headed the local Memorial Day parade committee and the Hudson American Legion Auxiliary, told the Journal that she or another organizer, Jim Garrison, had Kemter’s audio turned down, but wouldn’t confirm who.

During that portion of the speech, Kemter spoke about how, two weeks prior to the ceremony in Charleston, the “former slaves and workmen exhumed a mass grave of 240 Union soldiers and officers” and “took those remains and buried them individual graves with honors.”

“Each soldier was given a proper burial,” he said, while adding that African Americans “also constructed a fence to protect the cemetery site and erected a sign over the entrance.”

Suchan told the paper that she asked Kemter to take out certain parts of the speech ahead of the event. She told the Journal that parts of the portion of Kemter’s speech in which his microphone was turned down were included in what she previously asked Kemter to take out.

Kemter also told the paper that an organizer emailed him days before the event asking that a portion of his address that pertained to Black people’s role in the origins of the holiday be taken out.

Kemter told the paper that, during the time that his microphone was cut, he thought the incident was an accident. But he said he was later told by the audio engineer for the event, A.J. Stokes, that “it was not a malfunction.”

Stokes also told the paper that he refused to turn Kemter’s audio down when asked and that Garrison did so and that Garrison was the one who cut the audio. The paper said Garrison wouldn't say when asked if he did.

“That was very improper. I would’ve never done something like that,” Stokes said, adding he was “very upset” over the incident.

The video of this shows him speaking at about the 48:00 minute mark. The cut off happens about 2.5 minutes in at roughly the 50:30 minute mark. And I wouldn't even have thought this was a racist thing until they cut his mic BACK ON after the part that talked about the role of freed slaves in founding the holiday! smh

So afraid of the unwhitewashed version of American history they can’t stand to hear it.
