Leigh Bodden has been one of the few bright spots of this team over the last few years. But this year he seems to be getting flat out abused. The majority of the games this year, he seems to be getting beat soundly by opposing team's #1 receivers. He seems to be moving ok so I don;t think its injury related but this year he does not look like the shut down corner that some posters thought he was evolving into.

Are there any big name CBs coming on the FA market? With our first round pick gone and our second rounder (and maybe third rounder as well) likely going defensive line, this seems to me as the only spot where we might be able to shore up our CB position....

That beign said, I hope Bodden turns it around in the second half of the season and makes me eat a little crow....

Part of the problem is that we hardly every get QB hurries & pressure. In the NFL if the WR is given long enough, the WR will get open every time.

I have said this for the past 5 years about the offense... now I will say it about the defense... fix the line and the other pieces will be fine.

CanadaDawg, I thought I heard before I came on board here, that LB was battling a groin injury. Could that be one of the reasons his performance is not up to par, plus the lack of QB pressure by our front 7?

He is battling a groin injury ..however since he is injury prone it would be prudent of Phil to get another CB next offseason.
I said this well before this season started that we'll need another CB.

It's hard for any corner to cover a WR for as long as ours do.. We gotta address that line. I'm sure that Bodden will be just fine.

I agree 99.9% but LB has been out of position alot this year, he didnt even turn his head to locate the ball yesterday on a few of those passes and others he was beaten soundly, I'm just not impressed, he's good but he's average.....time for him to step it up.

Our corners are fine... we have 3 solid CB's IMO.

Leigh Bodden
Eric Wright
Devin Holly

What we need is a monster of a NT, and/or DE(s)...

Leigh looked slow and it also looked at some points we were playing a zone and it wasn't his job to cover some of those zones...

We need to pressure the QB though, we look terrible against the run as well...

Our defense has sucked in general, I doubt we can put it all on Leigh although I'll be the first to admit he had a bad game yesterday... There have also been games where Leigh has been amazing, so just chill.

A few thoughts on CB play.

1. It's legal to face guard in the NFL. They changed the rule two years ago.

2. I wonder what Hanford Dixon thinks of our corner play to this point.

3. We have tons of talent back there. Bodden, Wright, Pool and Jones all have above average athleticism. As a group they are right up there with other athletic secondaries. What's missing is experience and a pass rush. They'll get burned from time to time, they'll continue learning, then about 2 years from now they will be a feared group.

If we do two things, upgrade the DL personnel and start to disguise blitzes we'll start to see more turnovers.

We don't need a #1 corner. We already have two they are good.

Improving the d-line will improve our defense by leaps and bounds. If the line has the ability to stop the run and take up more of the o-line so our linebackers actualy have a chance at a pass rush, this defense could be decent. Im not saying Steelers type D, but it wont be the swiss cheese we've seen thus far this season.

It seems popular to quote you in this thread Merth but I'll do it as well. In the 3-4, if your defensive line isn't getting a push and shedding blocks or opening lanes/occupying blockers for your linebackers, the pass rush is going to be non-existant. If the pass rush is non-existant, it's going to be incredibly difficult for any cornerback to cover a wide receiver because, as has been said, it is only possible to cover a wideout for so long.

We have capable linebackers. We have capable defensive backs who, while young, are talented. We just have an absolutely disgusting defensive line. So long as our line is awful, the rest of our defense will follow suit.

Despite the appeal of flashy skill players, it's often the big uglies that matter most.

To an extent....but some guys are true cover corners.

The rules have made the real special guys even more important, as is evidenced by the contracts the real special corners receive and how fast the good ones come off the draft board.

I remember a time when corners were hardly ever drafted before the 2nd/3rd round.

IMO, corner is the most important position on the field after QB.

Can we change the title to "wanted, an actual defense"??

This one SUCKS ass and I for one have an issue with it being SOLELY lack of talent...

As far as Bodden, ya he is lookign pretty bad but the QB's have SERIOUS time to throw and you can only hold a coverage so long... Not to mention, our safeties are young and leave alot to be desired so he basically has no help out there... That HAS to weigh on your mind out there when you have Brodney and Sean behind you sucking ass on a weekly basis...

Just a thought...

My fellow Browns fans: Lets face it, we were lucky to pull off this win. Our "D" sucks and because of that, we will be very lucky to end this season with a playoff berth. JMHO

I love all my Browns brothers, its that some times, or a lot of the times, we just dont agree. I do no now how the Browns are going to win too many more games, if, they field the players, the way they did in the Rams game. PERIOD.

He is a egg head, and he sure talks the talk, but he backs it by walking the walk.

Peen just has a hard-on for busting on Bodden for some reason. It's like he's wanted him to fail all along.

And he feels especially good about saying 'I told you so', which is unfortunate because Bodden has sucked.

So I get to thinking maybe Peen knows what he's talking about when it comes to corner play. Then he makes the statement about Hall being a 'special one', and well, it kind of leaves me scratching my head...

Rishuz: Where did you read that Peen feels this way about Bodden. You should re-read the thread because Peen doesnt' rip on Bodden at all. He just says that really good corners are very important. That was either a joke or people just seem to gun for Peen lately.

I don't think Bodden is that great this year for some reason. but I too believe that D-Line has to be upmost importance for next year. We just got Eric Wright, and he's shown some promise. He's very young too (21 I think). To me they're good enough with Holly. I want two more D-Lineman next year that actually are decent or are rookies. May be a RB in the draft if there's a top one available with our 1st pick. If our line get a little more of a push, the QB wouldn't have all day and we wouldn't have the issues stopping the run.

Our corners are improving IMO. More pressure and better run stopping would make them look better.

I have no interest in DeAngelo Hall (also think he's overrated, Chad Johnson destroyed him this year) and think we have more pressing needs than CB. So yeah, Bodden will do for this year and next year. He's definitely not our biggest problem.

I don't think the guy is a joke....except for the fact he is a egg head....but maybe I put more into his ability to return and such than I should...

I don't have a problem standing corrected.

Riz...I am not ripping on Bodden...I have maintained for some time he is a nice player though this year he has seemed to hit a wall. I will write that off as being injured....we will see if he rebounds or not.

Hanford was a good example of that. It almost seemed like it happened in the middle of a game for him. It seemed he went from one of the best in the league to a guy who strapped on lead boots. It was amazing how fast that guy went from good to bad. It was like it happened before your very eyes.

All it takes for a corner to go from really good to pretty bad is a loss of 1-2 steps of speed or the loss of a fraction of a second in his ability to react...especially if his skills aren't that super to begin with.

Guys like Green or Sanders lasted a long time because their skills at the beginning we so far above the others it wasn't even close. It took them years to fall back to the even category.

But no....Bodden is never a guy I have ripped. I have just said he was never the shutdown corner many on the board claimed.

Dispite the fact I don't agree with a lot U say, U have a better perspective of DB's than U do QB'S..

Bodden is no shut down corner..he falls into the cover corner but is a bit fallable in that area..his constant injuries will prevent him from being a standout.
Just as I said Phil would take a corner on day 1 of the draft ..I also said we will need another corner next year and we will...

Peen, the thing is the guy has the makeup and attitude of Deion, but he doesn't put it together on the field. He is very inconsistent, and good WR's like Owens, Johnson, etc know how to get in his head, and then Hall starts getting dumb penalties and making mistakes. Can you imagine him having to lineup across from Hines Ward, who was famous for driving Earl Little insane?

Hall's bad news. Any guy that gets caught on camera listening to his ipod when he's been yanked from a game is someone I don't want on my team.

just clickin....

Bodden is struggling a bit, but so is the Entire Defense.... but all the while Bodden is tied for 2nd in the league in INT's and on pace for roughly a double digit INT season.... something we haven't seen since Anthony Henry's rookie year.

As has been said Ad Nauseum over the years about the Offense: Fix the Lines and then see what we have. It worked out pretty damn well for the O so far.

Bodden's also given up an amazing amount of yardage, plays over 20 yards, and touchdowns. I don't think he has a pass defensed over 20 yards either. Getting beat deep, from a guy who didn't use to get beat deep, is troubling. I wonder how healthy he is.

I like him a lot, I'm just saying, if Bodden keeps up this pace of always being a bit binged up, the NFL Shop might start selling the Leigh Bodden ankle boot.

It's probably the groin and I would also say that ankle probably isn't 100%...A key is to watch his movement and his backpeddles..if he lines up off the recievers so he doesn't have to turn and cut out of the backpeddle ..the ankle is brothering him still..
