The tigers got a short stop now http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3085675Tigers deal two prospects to Braves for Renteria DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers filled their No. 1 need Monday, acquiring All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for two prospects. Edgar Renteria Renteria Renteria batted .332 in 124 games with the Braves this year, finishing with 12 homers and 57 RBIs. Detroit went into the offseason needing to add a shortstop after deciding to shift Carlos Guillen to first base. "We were able to address our biggest need, heading into the winter, with one of the best shortstops in the game," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said on a conference call. The Tigers gave up right-hander Jair Jurrjens, who showed signs of promise last season, and minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez. "We gave up a couple of good players, but in order to acquire a player like Edgar we knew we had to give up some talent," Dombrowski said. With Dombrowski running the front office and current Tigers manager Jim Leyland in the dugout for the Florida Marlins, Renteria ended a thrilling World Series Game 7 in 1997. His hit with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Florida its first World Series championship with a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. "I'm real happy to be a Detroit Tiger player," Renteria said. "I know Dave and Jim Leyland and I think I'm going to be comfortable in Detroit." Leyland said the Tigers are "thrilled to death" to add Renteria. "He was a part of the biggest night of my life in 1997," Leyland said. "To be reunited with Edgar is a thrill." The Braves were willing to part with Renteria because they have shortstop Yunel Escobar, who turns 25 later this week. In exchange for the 32-year-old Renteria, Atlanta added a candidate for its starting rotation and a possible outfielder for the future. Jurrjens started seven games in Detroit last year and was 3-1 with a 4.70 ERA. He was 7-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts for Double-A Erie. Hernandez hit .293 with four homers, 50 RBIs and stole 54 bases in 124 games at Class-A West Michigan last season. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

The Tigers had a SS in Guillen, who they are now moving to 1B. I'm actually happy about this move for the Indians. Jurrjens is a mighty fine pitching prospect.

They were just talking about potential teams for A-Rod next year on Sportscenter and they said the Tigers may be one of the leading candidates...
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

The only thing the Tribe needs is to grow Skinner a pair during spring training.

where do we sign?
carl crawford is the most underappreciated player in the league...
can you imagine what kind of havoc he and sizemore can create on the bases?
peralta came up pretty big in the playoffs, but cabrera is waiting in the wings...
second base can go to either barfield, or possibly someone in FA
i still think peralta is going to move over to third eventually... so even if they don't pull that deal, you can move cabrera to SS and peralta to third...

Come on man....Skinner might have made a bad call, but until you have been there, you don't know.
Many players have been thrown out on that kind of hit in Fenway...many a 3rd baseman or SS have had the ball bounce back right to them to make the play.
Skinner isn't at fault there until after a few looks on instant reply.
He has a split second to make the call.

I appreciate your response, and as always, respect your opinion. The score was 3-2, it was Game Seven, the Whole Nine Yards was on the line. It was a chance worth taking, especially against Manny.
What's worse is, then AFTER that blunder, we let Blake swing right away, first pitch, into what actually became the Game Ending DP. Game, Series, Set, Match, over.
Anyway, I would just as soon keep Peralta and try the third thing because Marte is a flop,....and we need to hold on to ALL of the pitching we can. I would like to see what it would take to get Santana -- I'll bet he would too, seeing's how the Tribe clocked him 5 times last year,....
CC, Fausto, Johan, Jake, Byrdie, Sowers, Laffey, Miller, LEWIS,....
I think it was '76,....the Reds get all kind of credit as The Big Red (hitting) Machine. They had SEVEN pitchers that year with 13 or more wins,.....but I ain't so sure anybody's pitching would have stopped Boston.

Blake swung at something he thought he could hit.
I hate 1 pitch outs maybe more than anyone, but what are you going to do??
I have a feeling Wedge doesn't mandate many takes except on 3-0 counts...and even then it isn't often.

i agree, after seeing the replay a few times, skinner should have sent lofton, we had everything going against us after game 5, i think you have to take chances like that when things aren't going your way, if lofton gets thrown out, you live with it, because you may have lost anyways had you not sent lofton (which we all know now) however, i'm not sticking it on skinner...
we had a 3-1 lead, so there is blame to dish around to everyone, if you want to blame one guy, i think cc sabathia is fitting, if we get anything even respectable from him in the playoffs, cleveland could be the one hosting a parade downtown...
in order to beat boston, you have to be able to hit as well as pitch... if you took the 2006 world series champion cardinals against the 2007 world series champion red sox, boston sweeps them in 4 games... sometimes it's not just pitching that gets you a championship, especially with a team loaded like boston

I dont really see where the bad news is, Rentirea can be a good player, he can also stink at times, this is why he's been traded a few times. But bad news...Dont see it...

If Edgar Renteria is the end for the Tribe, we have more serious problems. He's a good player but PITCHING still wins out in baseball. Unless the Tigers bullpen and starting rotation gets straightened out, it won't matter what position players they sign. What's funny in this whole situation is the Tigers traded one of their best young PITCHING prospect to get him. You trade 21 year old Jair Jurrjens for a 32 (we think) year old Renteria?

I'm not saying Skinner was wrong either, and I do not want his " head-on-a-platter. "
And I ain't looking to blame any one person; as LBJ said, CC would have to be "that" dude.
All I was looking at was, we dorkburgered it up,...then put mustard AND ketchup on it by not instituting ANY small ball thereafter.
Anyhow,...I don't think adding Edgar ADDS anything except confounding more decisions in the infield. I mean, who is going to/ would have made a trade with a pitcher for Peralta ?? And if they move Jhonny to 3 -- has he ever played there before, or are we starting over again there -- when you KNOW Blake can get it done there defensively,...i.e. I don't really trust handing over 2 to Barfield, et al, when you can keep all 3 intact,....
I actually worry more about how good the Sox and the Yankees will be next year than Detroit adding ER.

renteria's only other stop in the AL was with boston a few years ago, and that was less then stellar, i don't see how this is bad news for the tribe, they're still the better team...
with that said, i'm glad to see the move because the tigers just coughed up a really good pitching prospect... a guy that probably could have seen the rotation next year, or as late as 2009...
i thought it was kind of a desperate move in my opinion.
