The Tom Hanks narration was a nice touch.
The logo sucks.

I did get a little chuckle out of the fact that despite starting down this path later than Washington FT, it's a done deal for Cleveland and WFT is still (afaik) nowhere near their next team name.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Not mad about it. It was coming sooner or later and though maybe late for some people and any change would have left a whole other group of people butt hurt I appreciate that they basically just said screw it and ripped the bandaid off. The logo is kind of old school. Not sure why they didn’t incorporate the Bridge statue into the logo like that frankly pretty cool roller derby logo but I suspect like all marketing these days there’ll be a lot of fluidity between logos and unis.
The best part about this is that we can all just stop talking about it. Amiright?

The Cleveland Guardians? The team settled for safe and boring – Terry Pluto https://www.cleveland.com/tribe/2021/07/...erry-pluto.htmlCLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Guardians? A new name for the Indians shouldn’t be a surprise to most fans. The owners of the Tribe – my favorite name for the team for many years – were not about to pick any name that would offend any significant interest group. Of course, fans of keeping the Indians called the Indians will say, “Don’t we count?” The answer in this political climate is – No. Just as they weren’t about to pick Tribe because of its association with Indians. They said that from the start of the search for the new name. The Cleveland Guardians? The franchise ties the name to the Hope Memorial Bridge near Progressive Field. It can lead to some easy logos of knight-type characters, even the bridge. My response? It could have been worse -- like The Spiders ... too creepy, crawly for me. It could have been better. My wife and I like the Walleyes, sort of fun with a fish. I knew they’d never pick it. Sounds too much like the Rubber Ducks, the nickname of the Tribe’s Class AA Akron minor-league team. And I just wrote Tribe ... out of habit. I know owner Paul Dolan felt tremendous pressure to change the name of the team. In 2018, I interviewed Dolan about dropping the Chief Wahoo logo. He said straight out, there was no intention of changing the team name. Here’s the exact quote from 3 1/2 years ago: “Not only are we adamant about keeping the name Indians, but the Commissioner (Rob Manfred) is similarly supportive of the name. Yes, some people will continue to make noise about that, but I’m not troubled by its use. The Commissioner is not troubled by the use of the name. We are confident the name will continue on.” There were no plans to change the name until the murder of George Floyd and all the social unrest and change of 13 months ago (May 25, 2020). It came up right after the NFL’s Washington Redskins dropped their nickname. Washington was under enormous corporate pressure to change its name. The Tribe will never say it, but they feared the same would happen to them. Interest groups would pressure key corporate sponsors to not advertise with the team if they remained the Indians. Ownership battles for every corporate dollar in a smaller market such as Cleveland with three major league teams. They didn’t want to put their sponsors in a tough spot. There also were many in the front office such as President Chris Antonetti who believed the name should have been changed a while ago. In the end, they went safe and rather boring. Not a big surprise. PS: I hope they do more work on the logo with the funky G and the wings. Does nothing for me.

The Browns always gotta "one-up" someone.
Cleveland Guardians: "Here is our new name and logo!"
Cleveland Browns: "Hold my beer."

Kind of boring, but I guess it was a really easy change for a bunch of cheap owners. Take the "IN" from the right side of the jersey and replace it with "GUAR". Can keep the left side "DIANS"
The logo is just plain awful. I'm guessing the budget was enough to hire a middle school kid for the work.
This said, it was overdue and there's a new name.

I wonder if they ever gave my choice: (White Caps) any consideration.
I mean their are two Sox teams.
"White Caps" has reference to the lake.
Nick name "The Caps".
Oh well.

They should have just called the Tribe ....... "The Tribe". I would have been OK with that. This new name sucks, and the logos look like a 5th grader designed them.

Guardians a bridge too far? Steve Doerschuk wrestles with new Cleveland baseball nickname https://www.cantonrep.com/story/sports/m...dge/8069004002/The thought police are on their motorcycles, coming for you, if the following is your bottom-line response to the new nickname: "If it keeps the Indians in Cleveland, I can live with it." You're not supposed to say Indians. Reactions to the renaming of the baseball team to Cleveland Guardians are all over the place. I never attended mind-reader school, but I believe this to be a common attitude among many thousands of fair-minded people: "I have nothing but respect for Native Americans. I wish 'Indians' would have been retained, within a context of respect and tradition." That perspective has been disrespected by the righteous crowd that boils it down to the inane ... "if you think it's OK to call the team Indians, you're a racist." The topic came up among friends in a booth at Roger Stewart's Bistro in Green the other day. One of them, a preacher named Joe, zealously covered the sensible reasons for dropping "Indians." Who am I to argue with a preacher? I was two months old when Willie Mays made the catch that ruined Cleveland's 111-win season. I made my own "catch" when I was 11 years old. I thought it was proof I would be the second baseman in Municipal Stadium. I loved the Cleveland Indians. I grew older attending way too many games, enough that, mostly because I was there so often, I saw the last three no-hitters — Dick Bosman's, Dennis Eckersley's and Len Barker's. At my age, I'm guessing I have heard or thought the name Indians a few billion times. It will take a while for some people to get used to "Guardians." Others will tune out forever, resentful of being ordered how to think. Many will embrace the new name. Given the fact the name was going to change, I like the choice. I had planned a column pitching "Cleveland Rapids," an action name that gave a nod to "Rapid Robert" (Bob Feller), the name of a passenger train running in and out of Terminal Tower (The Rapid), and maybe where the current gets rough on the local rivers. "Guardians" is much better, partly because it is linked to the bridge connecting Cleveland's west wide to the stadium. "Guardians of Traffic," statues designed by sculptor Henry Hering and architect Frank Walker, gaze out from each end of the bridge. The subtext of the new nickname is "guardians" of all that is good about human thought in general and Cleveland in particular. Granted, it becomes the most pretentious nickname in sports. The video introducing "Guardians" features Tom Hanks speaking in a voice more serious than "Saving Private Ryan." It covers some worthy platitudes but whiffs on the level of baseball as a breezy, fun diversion from things actually serious. The "Guardians" video borders on baseball as religion, in contrast to, say, the tongue-in-cheek "Akron RubberDucks." Baseball names:Minor league baseball's best nicknames: From the bold to the wacky to the 'huh?' Big bosses aimed to placate the "Indians" crowd with a name that ends in "ians." The script "Guardians" that will run across the front of Jose Ramirez's shirt is in the same style as script "Indians." Hanks' soliloquy reaches a crescendo as he says, "This is the city we love and the game we believe in." City that we love, check. Game we believe in, ridiculous. Major League baseball's economic structure is pathetic to the extreme. It has rendered miraculous a team with a roster as cheap as Cleveland's grinding to August slightly above .500. Albert Belle, Jim Thome, CC Sabathia, Michael Brantley and plenty of others went bye-bye because of the bucks. Why would anyone think Ramirez is long for the Guardians when his contract runs out? The deed is done. Make way (or not) for the Guardians. The ancient, stone-faced guardians on the bridge, you may recall, opened the film, "Major League," while Randy Newman droned, "There's a red moon risin' ... on the Cuyahoga River." The actors who played manager Lou Brown and owner Rachel Phelps are dead. Actress Margaret Whitton (Phelps) delivered the first speaking line. Imagine her saying, "Welcome to another year of Guardians baseball." The theme of the movie was saving the Indians from a Modell-style hijacking. Everything about the new Guardians video seems to address fears the baseball team will bail. We could talk about this all day. At the end of the day, it's just a baseball team, and life goes on with or without it. Here's one old-timer who prefers "with." If "Guardians" keeps the team in Cleveland, go Guardians.

I really like the video. The only thing I wish it did more of would be to highlight or reference the guardians statues more. There is literally one shot of them with the stadium in the background. Oh, on the head being placed on the body at the beginning. I'd think if you are naming a team after a particular thing, reference it more. But that's just me.
