So glad the years of the past are gone in regards to signing rookies.

It was a mess. Every year guys held out. Bradford was the last of quarterbacks that got those old giant rookie deals.

They are slotted now. Agents just beat down minor details.

thank goodness!

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns first-round pick Greg Newsome II won’t miss a beat in his bid to become the starting cornerback opposite Denzel Ward.

He signed his four-year rookie contract worth about $12.748 million on Saturday, including a $6.631 million signing bonus on the day rookies and quarterbacks report to Browns training camp in Berea. The deal includes a fifth-year club option.

He was the seventh of the Browns’ eight draft picks to sign, but third-round receiver Anthony Schwartz followed suit just minutes after him. Newsome was the fourth-to-last first-round pick in the NFL to sign, in part because he switched agents in June from Jimmy Sexton of CAA to Drew Rosenhaus.

We have signed deals with rookies CB Greg Newsome II and WR Anthony Schwartz.

All eight members of our 2021 draft class have signed their rookie deals.

The former first-team All-Big 10 selection out of Northwestern, Newsome had an excellent spring and made a strong case to start or play a lot right away. But Greedy Williams is coming back strong from his season-long shoulder injury, and will work hard to keep his starting role.

“My goal honestly is just to do whatever I can to help the team win,’' Newsome said during minicamp. “Obviously, I would love to start at corner. I think any corner in the room would love to be a starting corner. At the end of the day, if I am helping the team win, that is all I can ask for. I am definitely going to try to learn from those guys like (CBs) Greedy (Williams), Troy Hill and Denzel (Ward). There are a lot of guys in that room so I am just going to try to learn from them and get better each and every day so on Sundays, whatever coach needs me to do, I will be able to do it.”

Newsome, 21, also acknowledged that Myles Garrett set the bar high for everyone on defense.

“He’s a freak. I can’t wait to play with a guy like that, especially a guy like Myles Garrett where I will not have to cover for too long,” he said. “I just have to do my job. He is definitely setting the bar and showing he is ready to go. Whenever we get the pads on, he is going to be ready to go.”

On draft night, Browns GM Andrew Berry sang Newsome’s praises.

“He fits our profile,’' Berry said. “He was a multi-year producer in a Power Five conference, a great physical talent. He’s one of the youngest guys in the draft class despite how much he accomplished at the college level, and he fits the smart, tough, accountable profile that we want out of our players.’'

Veterans report to camp on Tuesday, and the first full-squad practice is Wednesday. The first practice open to up to 2,000 fans is Friday.

Browns 3rd round WR Anthony Schwartz signs his four-year rookie contract worth about $4.8 million

Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver Anthony Schwartz catches passes during the first day of rookie camp, May 14, 2021, in Berea.John Kuntz, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns third-round receiver Anthony Schwartz can now afford to go to Cedar Point as often as he likes.

The Browns’ third-round (No. 91 overall) pick out of Auburn and rollercoaster enthusiast, Schwartz signed his four-year rookie contract worth about $4.863 million on Saturday, including a signing bonus of $896,742.

He was the last of the Browns’ eight picks to sign, and did so just minutes after first-round pick Greg Newsome signed his four-year deal worth almost $12.8 million.

A sprinter with world-class speed, Schwartz was limited in organized team activities and mandatory minicamp with a sore hamstring, but is expected to be full-go during training camp.

Over the next six weeks, he’ll compete for playing time with Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry -- who mentored him in the offseason - Rashard Higgins, Donovan Peoples-Jones, KhaDarel Hodge and JoJo Natson. He’ll have to work hard on his hands, but once he gets consistent, he’ll present a matchup nightmare for defenses with his 4.26 speed in the 40 -- among the fastest in his draft class.

“What attracted us to Anthony was his ability to stretch the field,’' Browns GM Andrew Berry said on draft weekend. “[He’s] actually still very early on in his development curve as a player. He’s really, really smart from a football standpoint. He can play outside, can play inside and has the speed that can stretch deep.’'

If Schwartz develops as quickly as 2020 sixth-round pick Peoples-Jones did last season under the tutelage of receivers coach Chad O’Shea, he’ll contribute early on.

I gotta admit, I had no doubts that Berry would take care of it... Still, it's good to see it happen.

Great news! Full strength going into camp.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I think I saw on the OBR that Newsome's deal was fully guaranteed. So can any of you who understand the ins and outs of contracts tell me the implications for offsets?

Just curious, no expectation that a situation will arise where the offset is used.

According to the site I checked, the players directly before and after Schwartz are still unsigned, so that was probably the delay. Seems the three of them were holding each other up.

The money is mostly slotted, but there are issues to iron out...payment structure, default language if he gets cut, injury payments ....things like that.

I know a few weeks ago people were complaining he wasn't signed yet, but as I said then, it didn't matter. As long as they are in camp on time is all that matters.

I guess as a FYI, both of the #2 and #3 picks, Z Wilson and T lance are still unsigned.

Again, it is in the language...how much signing bonus, when is it paid, what are the cap numbers going to look like year by year? Sometimes the schedule the team wants to follow and what the player wants to follow are different.

Not saying it's so, but it's interesting and fun to think about.

Screw keeping stats on points allowed. We will start measuring things by 1st downs allowed.

I can hear Woods..."Well guys, we are going to run some gassers on Wednesday. We gave up six first downs today. We have to do better!".

Offsets are used when a player does not work out and is cut. The team usually tries to get language so that a player's salary with his new team (if he goes through waivers unclaimed) counts against his guarantee, and the team is only on the hook for the difference. Agents obviously want a failed player to get a raise in the form of their salary with their 2nd team if they fail with their 1st, because that way they get paid for doing the contract work.

Maybe I didn't ask my question clearly. Does the fact that Newsome's contract is fully guaranteed mean that the Browns could not recover (offset) his salary if he were to sign with another team in the case of a hypothetical release from the team?

How many games do you think Ward will be healthy and suit up and play for the Browns this season?

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I don't know if he has offset language in his deal, or not. I would guess that was a sticking point, and why he was so late signing.

I hear you YT. Thanks.

Maybe I"m naive but when I heard that his contract was fully guaranteed it made me curious as to whether that negates the inclusion of an offset in the contract. Again, as somebody who doesn't know the ins and outs of NFL contracts or the CBA I'm wondering does a full guarantee by definition mean you don't have offset language in the contract?

I'm just curious it's not a big deal to me one way or the other. I just want to satisfy my curiosity.

It is my understanding that "fully guaranteed" does not necessarily mean that there is offset language. That is a separate item in a player's contract.

It’s certainly nice to have everyone in the fold for the start of camp. Now we have to hope we avoid the Covid and injury bullets

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
