My words aren't against anything. I had no part in the decision. The "icon" you speak of no longer exists in the real world. Only in the minds of those wishing to cling to something that is gone.

No, you didn't "claim it". You simply said you could if you chose to. Just like I could. I think you see as well as I do that neither of us actually deserve to make such a claim. Nor do we have the background or understanding to speak for those who do. It's that simple. What those such as yourself seem to wish to do is claim they want to "hang onto an icon" while having no idea the impact it has on others. And really don't seem to care much about any of that.

It's no longer an icon Peen. It's gone. As you would say when it comes to things you don't put high on your priority list, "It is what it is".

I find the whole name change to be ridiculous
Any sports team / franchise that has /-had the
Name of a group or klan it was named actually
Out of honor.
It was intended to attach a perception
Of strength and commarodity to that franchise
Indians, Braves,Blackhawks, Fighting Illini
Ragin Cajans, Seminoles, Cheifs, Redskins,
Trojans, Warriors etc etc

The Dolan changed the name in order to.infuse
More money to help a franchise that was ailing
Finanically.

I’m just “OK” with the change. It’s a “meh” nickname and a bad logo right now. It will evolve.

I think we could have had a better choice, but it’s whatever

It's actually quite simple as to how some people are responding. Everyone has their own perception. But what one's perception is doesn't always quite line up with facts.

As fans often times we create an emotional attachment to symbolic things. It's "our team". We saw it with Chief Wahoo. We see it with the name change. And don't get me wrong, I'm attached to the Browns as well. But as fans we see this as a sport, a passion and something we personally identify with. It's we who "create an icon in our minds".

But that's so far from being an accurate perception of reality. Whether it's the NFL, MLB or the NBA, all major professional sports leagues are businesses. They are corporations. They make their decisions the same way every other corporation in America does. Over time corporations have merged, some have chosen to change their names and their monikers. They base those decisions on what they think is in the best interests of the corporation. Best for their image.

In this case to help ease into a transition they let you know it was coming. They created a contest to name the team in order to let the fans feel they had some say in the process.

What is happening with some people is they can't seem to separate their feelings from the fact this is simply a corporation rebranding itself. It happens all the time. The Indians brand was theirs, not ours.

Cleveland Guardians’ name change hits potential roller derby snag

https://nypost.com/2021/07/27/cleveland-...dium=SocialFlow

The newly renamed Cleveland Guardians aren’t the only Guardians in town.

When the Cleveland Indians announced their name change last week, the move was met with a mixed reaction among baseball fans. It also raised a red flag with a local roller derby team named the… Cleveland Guardians.

That could spell trouble for the baseball club, as their neighbors on skates are the owners of the clevelandguardians.com domain, as well as social media monikers it might be interested in — @ClevelandGuardians on Instagram and Facebook.

Using @Guardians is not an option either, as the handle is owned by Disney and its “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.

The roller derby Cleveland Guardians could be a headache for the renamed MLB team.
While the roller derby team appears to have abandoned its trademark, the Bryant Street Sports LLC of New York filed for trademarks protections for “Cleveland Guardians” in 2020. The Indians objected to the application this month, and the filing was withdrawn on July 21 — which may signify the sides worked something out, or that the baseball team filed its own application.

That would just leave the URL — with an unknown ownership calendar with the roller derby team having first right of renewal — and social media handles to be worked out.

The Indians don’t plan to make the Guardians switch until after the 2021 season, so there’s some time to work things out, though with the team five games out of an AL wild-card spot with 65 games left in the regular season, there may not a whole lot of it left.

I had heard about the roller derby team, but I didn't realize they were still going (thought they had folded).

Woops.

Either throw money at the roller derby team for the intellectual property rights, or add a dash. Cleveland-Gaurdians.com Problem solved.

It seems the story starts to lead you in the direction of it being a problem to only later explain it looks like they've worked something out. Seems like a non story.

Yes. One would think the teams legal department would have this all sorted out before any decision or announcement was made. That's pretty basic stuff.

Can't find the link, saw it on twitter this morning and can't find it now but it looks like they were going with Spiders but the Richmond Spiders having a lot of control over the Spider name caused them to go with Guardians.

I read that Dolan was fond of the name "Buckeyes" as a historical hat tip to Cleveland's Negro League team, but decided it really belonged to Ohio State. I would have preferred one of the other names from the Negro League, like the Comets or the Monarchs over Guardians, but I'm very glad they didn't choose Spiders.

If there is an active roller derby team named Cleveland Guardians, thats a problem.. Unless the Dolans buy them out. As for the @Clevelandguardians, that's something I don't have a handle on.... But I imagine they could buy that out as well.

Question is, who did they research on conflicting names?

I was really against Buckeyes because it belongs to OSU. I also didn’t love Spiders, but much prefer that to Guardians.

Just call it "Cleveland" Why do we even need a moniker?

I see cities that have multiple teams in the sport but dang, let's just be "Cleveland"

Off topic/tangent: The minor league hockey team used to be called 'Lake Erie Monsters'... which was awesome. They eventually changed it to Cleveland, which was a bummer, IMO.

I think "Tribe" would be appropriate.

I still can't believe no one tried to register and make this discovery before the announcment.

Absolute failure on the marketing team.

Heck, when we were looking to change our band name, we searched every name we came up with to see if it was taken, where they were located, what type of music they played.

That, or it's a case of the Indians doing due diligence and taking advantage of the local team not having their ish together. Not a great look either way (incompetence or big-leaguing a local team).

Nobody had the name copyrighted until the Indians did so. This will be over quickly.

Not to bring politics into it, but both Reagan and Bill Clinton used the term Make America Great Again but Trump is the one who copyrighted it.

Same thing here.

Oh, I know who's going to win the battle between the Indians and a local roller derby team that I just found out existed. No argument there.

I just don't think it's a great look for the team either way. The team is either so incompetent that they didn't realize the Cleveland Guardians were already a thing in their backyard, or they did know about them and decided to steamroll the little guy.
