I can not remember if this was a thread title before and don't see it listed this year?

Anyway I am at that age so:

A deal just came together that something could be checked off " the list".

For fishermen most have some fishing related type goal.

Atlantic salmon are considered the greatest gamefish. Even the great Ted Williams (A Hall of Fame Flyfishermen)(On top of Baseball) has said so. Atlantic salmon earned that acolade because of how hard they fight and the way they fight. Kinda like holding a boxing title of greatest pound for pound fighter.

I just booked a trip to New Brunswick, Canada for three days of guided fishing at a lodge. Food, bed, boat, guide the whole enchalada . To go after Atlantic Salmon with the flyrod.

On top of that out of the blue my son said he could go. He travels a lot. Had been out of work because of covid. He just started back to work today. I called to tell him I was going and I was going alone. And bang he had the dates clear. 9/5 to 9/9.

I have fished all over. Started taking my son when he was about ten. Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, Oregon and others. My son now 36 works at flyfishing store on the Deschutes river in Oregon. Partime. When he is not traveling on a tour.
He is building a house close by.

So cool that this all came together out of the blue in a few hours. August 9th Canada will open the borders for vaccinated Canadians, and US citizens. I had mentally thought this may not happen. The lodge closes September 30th. Canada just announced this.

It could have been off for the year and next year?

Then for my son to just happen to have those dates open and just a flight away. Feels like the stars were aligned.

Now it is only up to me and some luck on conditions then and strikes.

I know others have "that list."

Good for you! Only been to Canada once for fishing. I wanna say 20-ish yrs ago?

A buddy and I rented a cabin at the K/O Lodge. I wanna say 600? miles up, give or take. It's on Facebook.

We did well. We fell just ever-so shy of being able to say "we slaughtered em".

Walleye, Northern Pike, Lg Mouth, Sm Mouth. Saw black bears on the shoreline, etc.

Good for You!!! Just beautifull up there!!!

Let this sink in..... On 12-31-23 it be will 123123.

I’ve always wanted to go to Glacier National Park. Definitely on my list

I wanna master "The Bonzai Pipeline".

I wanna stay in one of those huts on stilts in the bay/ocean off Bora-Bora.

I wanna stand with that dude in Alaska who stood above a small dam taking video of Grizzly bears on top of the dam trying to catch salmon returning to spawn.

I still wanna figure out how Pit and I can "time travel" ahead and tighten up "past winning" Mega Millions and Power Ball jackpots, then time travel back and play em without anyone else figuring it out. Gotta be a way!

Learn to play the piano.

See a Cleveland Browns win a Superbowl. Born in 57, i've seen every game since the early-early 60's. Even the not sold out/not televised games in the early 90's. Bar just north of 480 off of State rd pirated them. Even cops on duty were there watching it. rofl

Get back into martial arts. Took lessons in a certain style for 3 years(1977-1979ish?). Pulled a groin executing a high side snap kick. Out 3 months. Came back, re-pulled it. Done. Finni.

Still wanna take my blushing bride to the opera.

Retired in May, 2019. 7mos later, shutdown. Wanna find a part job just to do something. At night. A bar? Barback? Something.

Etc, etc, etc.....

Let this sink in..... On 12-31-23 it be will 123123.

I'm a big travel guy, so it's all about going places to me.

I crossed off Pompeii and Omaha Beach back in 2018. I'd like to go on a European wine country tour, all the way from Spain, through France, and down into Italy.

I'd also like to go to Bora Bora or the Maldives in one of those over-the-water bungalows. Not sure which location is better.

I'd like to set foot on all seven continents.

I'd like to do a Pacific Highway tour and also sample every wine region along the way, from Napa & Russian River valley on down to Santa Barbara.

I'd like to trace my ancestry and visit cities we came from back as far as it can go.

I studied abroad in Madrid and I'd like to get back there to spend more time.

I'd like to make it to all the major Hawaiian islands.

I'd like to visit Auschwitz and some of the other death camps in Poland, not because it would be uplifting or joyous, obviously, but because I think those are historical monuments to what happens to us when we let our ugliness take over.

I'd like to make it to Oktoberfest in Munich.

There's probably a ton more that I'm missing.

So many places to go and things to do.

IMO is important to have a list. And to hold yourself accountable. Have a action plan to realize the list. And then work the plan.

I keep cheating. I told myself many times this is a bucket list thing. Then I do it. Then I say "damn why should I not do that again."

I started doing things like that when I first graduated from high school. Now here I am an old man and still crossing stuff off the list.

I would love to find a 1971 or 1972 Grand Prix SJ. I had one of each year as a kid. I am saving my pennies ..... but have a lot of pennies to go before I can afford one.

Realistically:

I'd like to get back to Victoria, Canada one day and go whale watching just beyond the bay again - on one of those sophisticated, motorized raft things (can't remember what they're called). Saw a lot of porpoise the first time, not much else.

Unrealistically:

Take a deep water submersible down as far as possible into the Mariana Trench.

My wife and I have been pretty much everywhere we have wanted to go....except Iceland. I guess that is the last of the travel destinations to cross off. Now we are more or less on a memory tour of places. I could name all sorts of things we have done over the years....how many people do you know who have been on a 5 day Reindeer sled expedition to go above the arctic circle in Finland? We did. There is no interest in Africa, China, or the Middle east. I guess I would like to take a Mississippi river cruise...the whole thing. We might break that up in to 2 trips....the upper and lower. There are some pretty plush riverboats these days.

For that matter there aren't many things that I haven't done that I would like to do....at least things you actually set out to do, not things like dinner at the White House or something like that.
Maybe be a guest conductor for some orchestra. You know, you bid on those at silent auctions, then get to stand up there and act like George Szell for a song or two..

More are coming...ringing the bell to open the NY Stock Exchange would be pretty cool.

After that, it pretty normal stuff like staying at hotels we have never stayed at or eating at some restaurant.

Travel was a big part of what my wife and I did/do. We set a bucket list many years ago...even before we were married, so we started crossing stuff off early, and added more.

Just a tip for those who haven't started the memory tour at this point...if you went there with your kids, they just aren't as fun or seem as nice because you end up talking about what Katie did when she saw that, or what Brian or Christopher did over there?

At least for us, the mood borders on melancholy.

My son married an Australian gal.

Her Mom is from New Zealand and she is Maori and her Dad is from England.

My son goes there every year for a month or so as well as New Zealand where he trout fishes.

I have spoken to her parents on zoom calls and have an open invitation.

But damn flying there is like 14 hours straight.

I can't handle that.

I agree...we crossed off Australia in 1980. Never went to New Zealand, several days in Tahiti instead. Said we'd save NZ for another trip.

After the flight, we decided we didn't need to do that again, so we figured we had all of that crossed off. Same with Tahiti. If we ever go back, it will be by boat, which I doubt. Even Hawaii is too far from Atlanta. The last couple of trips out we flew to San Diego, spent a day or two, then fly the last 5 hours to the islands. Fly to Las Vegas on the way back. It helps a lot with the time changes.

The reindeer sled expedition sounds totally cool.

I have been toying with the idea of driving as far North as the road can go into upper Western Canada.

Roadtrek type camper. Take like two months. I love spotting wild things.

At this stage of life I have no interest to go outside of Canada and the US.

Been there done that. And the way the world is today I have no interest in that kind of travel.

For a long time I thought all I would be doing is traveling. But as you get older it is less appealing. I like taking my two grandsons on short trips. For many years I took my son a fly fishing expeditions. I can no longer handle that kind of fishing. This trip for Atlantic salmon in Canada most likely my last rodeo.

Iceland. I had made plans to go there on a fishing trip this year. Then covid. Amazing scenery and fantastic fishing for trout, artic char and atlantic salmon.

Always wanted to go to New Zealand to fish. Now I can go and stay there free and I just can not wrap my mind around that long flight.

I am with you on the travel plans.

My wife has family in Switzerland, he mother was born there, so I suspect we will have to make at least 1 more trip. Being so centrally located, I am sure she will want to hit several other countries while we are there. She acts like we haven't done that 6 times before, but, it is what it is. One more time won't hurt anything

Go to Las Vegas, fork over $500 or so and you can do that. Heck, she would probably rub the vegetable oil on your head if you asked nicely.

I have caught two bonefish.

One was big for a bone about 9lbs.

They are like bullets in the water. They will drain a reel real fast.

Good goal for the list.

I had a very close friend who has passed that did that.
We watched games toegther for many years.

On time he went with this group to San Francisco. I watching the game in Atlanta. And sure enough the camera spaned the Browns crowd and bam there he was.

I jumped up and was yelling go Bruce.

Finish the job great goal.

That's a good one. At some point, I'd like to go to every single Browns game in a season, home and away, including preseason.

Depending on the car, depreciation could be huge. People think all of those kinds of cars can be investments, but not all hold up.

Doable right?

Not been to Costa Rica. Been close as in Guatemala.

Really beautiful.

They have some cool packages to Costa Rica. You go into the rainforest. There is also some amazing fishing in the Pacific. Lots of Americans have retired there.

Costa Rica is beautiful. Manuel Antonio National Park is fantastic. Spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys (the only place they live in CR), howler monkeys, sloths… incredible beaches. Quepos is a small fishing village. Good shopping, great coffee. Can’t recommend CR enough.

My bucket list check marks keep getting put off because of COVID. I had planned for Vietnam in 2020… well, that got the kibosh. I turn 50 next summer. One of my buddies does too. We’d talked about a joint trip with our significant others to the South Pacific… then Australia. I’m thinking that’s not going to be a possibility as COVID keeps its grips on foreign borders. The thought of booking it, then cancelling, isn’t appealing.
Take the jab. Wear your masks folks. Damn.

Stayed on the ocean in Punterenas(west coast) and on the ocean in Limon(east coast) and also stayed in the non-coastal capital of San Jose.

We started and stayed in Punterenas for 2 days, drove thru a heavy jungle to Limon and stayed for 2 more days, then drove to the capital(San Jose) for 2 more days.

Sounds like a lot of traveling but I think Costa Rica is roughly just about the size of West Virginia?

The fruit company Dole sponsored it. I was in the produce and/or supermarket business for 46.5 years. 16 of us went. Produce Managers, Produce supervisors/specialists, etc.

We hit the banana jungles, packing plants, etc.

Just a beautiful country.

The only thing I was disappointed in was the working conditions in the "non air conditioned" banana packing facilities. Keep in mind it was 100+ degrees every day and humidity like no other.

40lb boxes and then onto pallets/skids(42 cases 6 tie/7 high per pallet/skids to ship facilities.

99.9% women working in the packing facilities btw.

Let this sink in..... On 12-31-23 it be will 123123.

I thought that as well at one time. After having the season tickets, heck, back to back home games is hard enough. If a person lived in Cleveland it would be more doable.
