I've noticed this too, and have been roundly critized for pointing it out. I have also said that in the past few games he has cut down on the amount of unforced errors. Winslow and Edwards can make any QB look better than they are, so can players like Moss, Gonzo and Gates.

he's *still* a young, relatively inexperienced QB and no team is going to trade away super high caliber D players that will come in here and make some overnight difference to our strength of defense- so I don't buy that theory.

Yeah, you may be right about that, but what about trading picks for him that we can use to get Defensive help? That's always a possibility.

I'm not necessarily for trading DA.. I know I'll get killed for saying it, but depending on how DA finishes the year, maybe next year or the year after, we trade Quinn.. Who knows.. Lots of it depends on DA and if he contiues on this path..

what's absurd is to say that no trade should be discussed b/c if you look at DA's stats in a vacuum, he should remain our starter...

Now stop right there,, WHEN did I say we shouldn't discuss a trade?

As for the DA Stats in a vacuum comment,, gimme a breat DNA,, I'm sure you will agree that if there wasn't a Quinn on this team, we'd all be talking about locking up DA for the next 10 years or so, what does that tell you.

I have no problem saying this, he's the best QB we've had here since Kosar was here playing at his best....

He's big, tall, got a rocket launcher for an arm, he's smart and by all accounts appears to be a leader on and off the field.. Stats don't tell the whole story, just a piece of it, but when looking at his, they are pretty darn decent.. To top it off, he's young and still considered pretty inexperienced but he seems to have lots of upside..

What's not to like?

I know I know,, he sometimes throws into double and triple coverage,,, Let's take him out back and shoot him before it gets out of hand

DNA,, do what you want,, but I don't care what you say, it's not Absurd at all to put DA out on an Island and examine him for who and what he is..

KEEP IN MIND,, you haven't read one remark from me saying anything negative about QUINN,,,, I got nothing bad to say about Quinn.. Again, by all account's he's a fine young man with a ton of talent..

The problem this coming off-season is the need to address the defense and figure out the running back position. If Anderson is traded then QB becomes an additional area of concern. Browns need to keep him for there is no need for the additional headache that would come with weakening the QB spot.

Additionally, not having a 1st round pick isn't any handicap. That money and roster spot can go instead towards picking up a veteran free agent. And it will be a relief not having to listen to an agent of an unproven rookie asking for the moon.

I know it's gonna take more time to find out, but I'm kinda wondering if we don't already have our 1-2 punch on this team in Wright and Harrison.. Suddenly, with Jamal Lewis out, these two youngsters have stepped up.. Whether it's enough or not,, I just don't know, but it makes me wonder if we are gonna be ok with just those two guys?

With Chudzinski's familiarity with Turner of the Chargers...U can bank we'll be making him an offer...

Then turn to the D cause we need NO MORE High $ Offensive Linemen once Bents gets back at RG...

Its called growth and maturity. Tom Brady sucked his first year so bad that even he expected to be cut. Farve stunk it up so bad he was traded. Steve Young was booed. Hell look at Troy Aikman early in his career. He was awful his line improved and the Cowboys added him some weapons.

he may be for real and he may be a flash in the pan but either way enjoy it. Come on DA is on pace to shatter the number of TDs of hall of fame quarterbacks during the best years of guys like Aikman, Montana, Young. He is on pace to put up close to 40 td passes this year and does anyone realize how few qbs have ever hit 40 tds in one season? lol

I totally agree, and hope your right, it is like Tom Brady. What I've seen and am worried about is a possibly average (maybe he is great, but we only have a couple games) QB that is playing with sky high confidence, with receivers making great catches, and an oline keeping him untouched. All I'm saying is it is to early, and there are to many factors factoring just right for Anderson, to claim him as the next great QB, but I hope he is.

You guys would bitch if you were hung with a new rope. Remember a few weeks ago we were talking about cutting Anderson and keeping Frye and BQ. The guy is putting up the numbers. He is playing like Brady, Manning. I can't remember any Cleveland QB playing at this level, including Bernie. Until he shows he can't get the job done I don't see how we can consider trading him for a unproven who put up some numbers against Insurance salesmen in pre-season.

Dawg Duty,

Anderson has been playing at a high level for 2 games, I'll give you that, 2 games, or 1/8th of the regular season. Ourside of the last 2 games, he has been spotty at best. That Bengal game looks all nice and bubbley but he made some terrible throws. Its easy to get all giddy with 1 or 2 games, and we all know people on these boards do get giddy, but 2 good games doesn't equal the next HOF QB.

Yep, he has shown against the winless Rams, the winless Dolphins and the defenseless Bengals, and the offenseless Ravens.

Better than Bernie??

Has he shown improvement as of late?? Yes he has.

Let's see what he looks like these next 3 weeks, especially against the rival Steelers that had Frye all scrambled.

How can we consider trading him? It's something that has to be looked at for the potential betterment of the team. That's how.

While I can appriciate what your saying about DA playing well,, he's not yet in Mannings or Bradys class,, not close. As for him being better than Bernie,, No, I don't think you will get anyone to agree with that at all.. He's not in Brian Sipes league either for that matter,, and he can't even think about being in Otto Grahams league. Not yet anyway,, but I suppose it could happen..

As someone else already pointed out, we haven't exactly played the best teams the last couple of games.. and for the season the best defenses we faced were Pittsburgh (I can't and won't hang that one on DA) New England and Baltimore.. Removing Pittsburgh from the mix because DA didn't start that game, means he's one and one against tough D's That's pretty good.. But certainly not enough to put him in the Manning, Brady and Kosar, Sipe or Graham league..

I really like DA,, I like his size, I like his arm and I like his new found knowledge of Chuds offense... (man, thinking back to how he played in preseason,, I have no idea how he's come this far this fast, simply amazing)

And for all I know, The Browns feel he's the real deal and intend to keep him for 10 years.. As long as he's doing his job well, I personally have no problem with that at all.,, I just wanna win.

FYI, I only brought up Sipe and Graham because you said no Browns QB has played better than DA, not even Bernie... to be fair, DA hasn't played as long as any of them so it could still happen for him.

The Browns and DA and his agent would all be better served being focused on improving and winning football games along with being patient to see just how the rest of this season pans out....

6 games as a starter this year with a 4-2 record against some pretty soft teams does not dictate a monster long term contract or commitment to any player by any team... Take a look at the Tony Romo situation... And TR was in the Boys org for 3+ years... I'm not meaning to minimizing how well DA has played and improved over the past 6-7 weeks. He has shown well and become a good leader that all in the organization is very supportive of.

This is a very good position for all involved. I believe that DA and the Browns will agree on a deal that makes DA a very well paid NFL back up, compete for the starting job type NFL QB. I believe DA fully realizes he is still holding the reins while the BQ, the future QB is groomed properly.

About the game... This weeks test against a very good Seacocks team that is very familiar with the Browns offensive and defensive terminologies and tendencies will show us all much more where our team is overall. If the Seasparrows get up quick on our Browns it could be interesting... They won't fold like the Lambs... They will play physical run it down your throat football and they will come after and get too DA...

Should be a good game!!! I would have penciled this in as a Browns loss two months ago... Not so today.

HELL I have no idea what that is However I still have to smack myself, when I see people acting like DA is the next Payton Manning, OR the next Tim Couch. He has started Six freaking games (this year) and most people act like that defines his career

We have WAY to many people on this board acting like DA is GOD, and we have WAY to many people acting like he is a homeless bum. The truth is somewhere in between.

Here comes another critic PDawg. And I don't want to be critical here of your opinion, but I do think you and overtoad have missed something here that needs to be pointed out. Yes at 1st glance it appears DA is putting the ball into someplace he shouldn't.

That said i think your missing something and would be well served to take note of. In all the instances that I recall DA in the past 2 games anyway throwing the ball at what appears to be covered recievers he was actually throwing to recievers that had begun to brake down the coverage. Heres what i mean take note of the Winslow pass for a TD this past week. It appeared that the DB had pretty good coverage, but truth be told the DB had his back to the LOS, and that really is a huge advantage to our recievers, and a huge advantage to the QB, after all how can the DB, react to a ball he doesn't see coming? There in fact is only one chance for the ball to be caught and that is by our reciever, the DB is not going to catch this ball and the very worst that can happen is that the ball falls incomplete.

The key here is does the DB have his back to the LOS, if he does DA is making a sound decision to try to fit the ball in, no question here IMHO

I agree with the idea that DA could end up being just a good backup. But then again he has more starts the Swaub and he got a killer deal with Houston so could you explain why Swaub is actually playing pretty good for Houston and DA has better numbers and has outplayed Swaub in every way yet DA is a backup with little trade value. Wow I cannot believe someone wouldn't pay pretty dearly for DA, almost regardless of how he does against the better teams. It's to be expected that a QB will struggle at least some against the better teams, thats why their the better teams. You cannot expect DA to buck the trend just be productuve and protect the ball in these types of games. I will say this tho the more you trail in a game by the more likely the QB to take chances with the ball, it all flows together..

JMHO

I think you're meaning Matt Schaub? DA does not have more starts then him......and Schaub established himself as a commodity in limited time behind Vick....

I've considered that, and noted it somewhere around here.

The one thing that he is doing far better than I'd ever expected is being able to find where he's got a 1-1 matchup. Now sometimes he's forcing a ball that he shouldn't, but right now he's getting away with it. He has to be given credit for knowing where to go with the ball, and for pulling it down and running, or simply throwing it away. Some of the throws that you're envisioning (not all....some) are spots where Derek shouldn't really be going with the ball. Winslow and Edwards are simply taking the ball in the air. Granted, that's what they are supposed to do in a perfect world, but against teams that know what they are doing, those same throws are going to cost Derek bigtime.

I want to reiterate that I'm giving him the credit he deserves. I didn't think I had it in him. He's gotten on a hot streak that nobody saw coming. Still, my thing is to wonder if he can do this against real teams. We've had cupcakes for most of his starts, and to his credit, he lit them up. When we've faced real teams, he's had a rough go of it. He's hot right now, but this streak can't be kept up. He's really forcing balls into places that he shouldn't, and eventually, the worm will turn.

Regardless of what happens, he's won me over as a backup. I once said that I didn't even think he had that in him, and if he'd make it as our #2, I'd consider it a gift. He's there now, much to my crow-infested delight. *L* But we're still way too premature when it comes to saying he's arrived as an NFL QB. The numbers look great, but the indivual issues are still there. Until he does it against a team that has actually won something...........

I wasn't expecting this kind of showing from DA either but what he has done against these smaller teams is what any good NFL QB SHOULD be doing.. The next few weeks will be a good litmus test for him but there is no denying the skillset... Some of the throws he has made these past few weeks have been downright SICK and were the kind of throws that Frye could only dream to make... Most noteably the pass to Winslow for the TD...

I am thrilled to have him show up and play this way and the combination of the O-Line, his receivers and the playbook have just added to his success...

And for the people wanting to trade BQ over DA's short run of success, let the situation play out and watch how the FO uses this season of DA's to bring in some more talent...

Personally, I prefer to keep him if we cannot get the pricetag we want for him... Never can have enough competent QB's on a roster...

Actually I've been saying the same thing as you lately. Earlier games like Cincy, Oakland and the Ravens he was forcing too many balls where he shouldn't. I think in the last two games he hasn't. He does still throw in tight coverage, but unlike Frye he has the arm to do it.

Quote:

I agree completely.

My whole point about Winslow and Edwards is still valid IMO. DA is able to just throw balls up and let them go get it. That is not a slight on DA but rather props to Edwards and Winslow (JJ too). We have three big recievers who all have great hands (as long as you don't throw right at Edwards hands ) and any good QB would take advantage of it.

I still think the jury is out on DA. Earlier this year (as well as last year) was just an extension of his college career. Lately he looks like a QB I have never seen before. I think by the end of the season we will all have a better feel for just how far he has come.

"but a Schaub deal that Atlanta had last year?"

No...more like the Brees, Rivers situation. And DA is taller has more of a gun and is not having Shoulder surgery.

Why I say its nothing like Shaub.
Schaub had 5 or maybe its 3 starts over the YEARS...and an 0-3 record. Schaub was a "HE'S GOING TO BE GOOD" where as DA and Brees are in the "HE IS ALREADY GOOD" category.

As I have said all along - if DA gives us a .500 season or better with a 90+ passer rating. He will be a very HOT COMMODITY!

I was even rediculed for that proclamation but now that everyone is saying it - its okay

We can tender him high...or possibly even use our first Franchise TAG where we would garnish 2 first round picks if we chose not to match any offers.

If BQ is our guy and I still think he is...Even though its a big risk cause BQ is speculated to be good while DA is actually good. But if we feel BQ can do what DA does and more....We will be back into the first round next season

JMHO - This can only be Good or Goood...the only bad for me is another QB competition in 08...I don't like them!

JMHO - This can only be Good or Goood...the only bad for me is another QB competition in 08...I don't like them!

Here's the question I pose...and people seem to dance around it...

What if we tag DA at the highest RFA tender (1st and 3rd...and I don't think you can franchise an RFA to my knowledge), and a team makes a HUGE offer with a poison pill clause in it? Teams are more likely to poison pill a QB than another player.

Do we match it in fear of Quinn not panning out (assuming there's no poison pill...if there is then it's virtually unmatchable)? Or do we say "thanks for what you've done for us, good luck with your new team" and take our first and third rounders? (Which will likely be HIGH picks since if you need a QB, you're likely a losing team).

Every time I pose this question I get the "are you kidding me? No one's gonna give up a first rounder for DA! Much less a first AND third. Get out of town." rather than someone actually looking at the situation and thinking critically.

As much as I hate the thought of losing DA and having the fear of Quinn not panning out...I think if I were Savage, I let him walk and take the picks. Since those picks could be used on our defensive front, and we drafted Quinn for a reason.

But it makes me very ill inside to think of that at this point.

Nowhere did I say Anderson is better than Bernie, Sipe, Otto Graham or in the same class as Manning and Brady. I'm saying that right now he is playing at a comparable level with Brady , Manning and at a level no Browns QB has played at. I don't have the records in front of me but I'm guessing by the end of the year he will ( unless injured ) have most of the important passing records. He could fall flat on his face starting today. Right now however he is the man.

I expect to see Anderson traded before the restricted period begins. If u wait till the RFA period you take a risk of DA signing with someone else. If you want him you got a chance to get him early and that could very well mean someone like Glen Dorsey or dare i say McFadden in Cleveland next year.

Savage believed in Quinn so much he spent a first and third and didnt wont him thrown out there this year. Savage will make the move to Quinn and he will trade Anderson while he is at peak value. That value could be a lot higher than anyone thinks and even higher than a first and 3rd. Its funny most thought we wouldnt have nothing to talk about due to losing our first round pick but now we have the playoff race along with the draft and trade.

Its a great time to be a Browns fan.

As I have said all along - if DA gives us a .500 season or better with a 90+ passer rating. He will be a very HOT COMMODITY!

I was even rediculed for that proclamation but now that everyone is saying it - its okay

Guess I have to say it again since you're still feeling a little sensitive about it.....

You weren't ridiculed. The thought of Anderson being a 90+ passer is the funny part.

Here's another one:

Quote:

If Brooks Bollinger gets the Vikings to a .500 record and a 90+ passer rating, he'll be a HOT COMODITY

So is the statement funny, or the player in question?

I know it's horribly unpopular to jump off the feel-good bandwagon of Anderson, but when REAL scouts take a look at the body of his work to this point, they'll see a guy who's being bailed out by his receivers while doing much of his work against bad teams.

Now it comes as a shock to all of us to say that it's possible he can keep this up, but looking at our schedule, man, we're playing nothing but scrub teams down the stretch. That fact won't be lost on the scouts.

Anderson's test starts today, though the Seahawks are a notoriously BAD road team during these last few years. If Anderson can keep this up over the next three games, he may well be valuable, but he's not the guy that his rating says he is. He still has holes in his game.

Did I miss something, isn't DA's Passer rating hovering right aroiund 95.6 right now? Of course not including todays game with Seattle.

Don't be smart D

Anderson had some issues in the first half today, but he really got into a rhythm in the second half, and impressed the Hell out of me. His guys weren't bailing him out in the first part of the game like they had all year, but in the second, they did Anderson very few favors, dropping those two passes that should have been TD's.

I didn't think he could do what he did. Test #1: Passed with flying colors. Some of those throws he shouldn't have attempted or missed badly on, but in the second half he was most excellent. Chud deserves special mention for his gameplan, and that screen pass then bootleg in overtime were just slightly less impressive than what Boise St's coaches did to Oklahoma last year.

The oddest part to all this is what if Eo and his optimistic view (which could turn out to be right for the first time in years ) turns out to be correct on Anderson. If the guy turns out to be real, putting the tender isn't the smart thing to do. Giving him a long-term deal is the smart thing to do, Quinn be damned.

Anderson aced the first part of a three-part test. If he manages to play well during the next two, well, if this is what it feels like to be wrong, I don't want to be right

I wouldn't say Anderson passed with flying colors, but he certainly passed. There were a few missed throws and a few poor reads, but there were also drops as well - it was good enough for me, though he was the beneficiary of some excellent protection.

Evaluating DA will continue over the next two weeks, but this was good enough for me against a pretty good defense. The next two tests will be tougher. I hope he keeps it up.

I still think he's just increasing his trade value though... Quinn is still the future IMO, regardless of what DA manages to do. Someone will be traded and Phil will look like a fool if he trades the one he just about mortgaged the future for this year. Like it or not, that's probably the reality of the situation.

I'm not on the DA wagon yet either. I'm enjoying his production but that old DA is in there somewhere. He looked ready to revert to his old self in the first half, but I'll give credit where it's due and he's looking like his decisions and execution is improving. DA, BQ...who cares, I'll take W's!!!

On the flipside, he'd look like a fool if he traded a good QB just because he had a highly-paid for guy on the bench. Considering those two things balance out, I think it reverts back to a bird in the hand. Quinn can't have a stronger arm than Anderson......well, we could name reasons for both sides of the arguement, but we still have to wait and see how the year plays out.
